Couldn’t be more blessed with the deer I have been able to harvest the past few years of hunting. Hours and hours of reading and watching videos and trying to educate myself on how to get these smart mature animals to come over to my side of the fence by grunting,rattling etc. yes I am very fortunate to have deer of this size for Minnesota on or near my property but I would never have been able to get an opportunity at any of them if I didn’t use a grunt call. And, to think, he gave each and every one of us, the privilege of staring down the side of his barrel on every adventure he went on. JSHA changed the outdoor tv world, for the better, in so many ways. I’m so very grateful to think I got to be a small part of this incredible production. For seven years, I followed Jim all over the world. I filmed him in 15 different countries. And although I didn’t know or appreciate it at the time... Jim gave me the ride of my life. 🙏🏼 This photo was taken in September of 2002. This was my very first moose. And this hunt was the VERY FIRST EPISODE of Jim Shockey’s Hunting Adventures, back in 2003. We were hunting for a moose for Jim, and I was just the cameraman. When this moose walked out, Jim Handed me HIS GUN, and told me to shoot him. I handed him the camera, and did what he said. It was the greatest hunting day of my life, for a long long time. This hunt was heavy on gear from @kifaru_intl , @yeti, @sitkagear, and @firstlitehunting . The Reckoning, Fulcrum, and Muskeg packs worked flawlessly with heavy meat/antlers. One partner had an Osprey...it broke on the hike out. The 12 man and 8 man tipis (and stoves) we’re key to comfort and 50 mph plus winds. The Yetis kept our perishables cold the whole time, including ice for the night time happy hour for 8 days. Good gear is expensive, but worth its weight in gold in time of need. After 3 moose hunting trips over the past 5 years, I was finally able to fill my tag on day 7 of our Alaskan hunt. This beautiful bull measured 62 1/8” inches wide and will provide both my family, and a few local native families in Alaska, with endless pounds of meat! Read on… Villagers in a remote corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo tell stories of a giant ape that kills lions. Legend has it, the apes are seven feet tall with large black faces. They catch fish and howl at the moon, walk on two feet, and hunt in packs. Aside from a few footprints and some questionable first-person accounts, these legends were all primatologists had to go on when they embarked on a massive search of the Congo for these giant apes in 2003. A massive primate species in the Congo intrigued scientists, since no known species of chimpanzee had reached the epic size described, and the nearest gorilla population in Africa was thousands of miles away. Researchers descended upon the Congo in droves, armed with the latest technology and hundreds of thousands of dollars in research grants. Several months later, they discovered the Bili Ape, a giant chimpanzee, larger than any other chimp or gorilla, that has developed a completely new chimpanzee culture due to their isolated habitat. The massive chimps occasionally walk on two feet, sleep on the ground, and use rocks to smash the shells of turtles and snails to gain access to meat. Scientists believe these chimps have developed a completely different culture, departing from chimpanzee norms. Given the Bili Ape’s distinct and highly developed “smashing culture,” some even believe they are catching evolution in the act. “What’s interesting about the Bili Ape is the evidence the researchers had on hand,” Dr. Meldrum says. “Oversized footprints, nests, local lore. This is the same kind of evidence we have for the existence of the Sasquatch, only in the case of the Bili Ape, there was much less of it. If you haven’t seen this video by now you really need to check it out. I interviewed the videographer, Betsy Judson, this morning and it was cool to hear about this wild situation firsthand. A 600-pound grizzly fighting a 700-pound elk is not something you see every day. Betsy told me she only started her YouTube channel to share her experiences with her grandchildren and so they would have a record of her once she’s gone—not for any notoriety. Not many grandmothers I know spend four months straight sleeping in a tent at night and shooting photos and video of wildlife all day. It was a very fun conversation. Backstraps!! . . Yesterday the weather dropped some degrees and I busted out to see if I could find some deer. I was meat hunting. Our freezer was LOW. Had a few hens and young juvenile turkey come through but nothing legal. Then a few doe and a fawn walked through. I set up and took a shot. Clean through and through double lung shot. We as hunters never want to harm an animal. It was a perfect shot and she fell just a few yards from where she was. Today I am so grateful for the meals she will provide our family and friends. . . In my stories last night I said I was grateful for three things... . To be able to put meals back in our freezer, to have cut my field dressing time in half since last year and to have done the whole A-Z hunt and butchering solo brings such a feeling of accomplishment and joy. . . Throwback to @kara.landolfi first day of hunting. We hiked in several miles in the dark to a small clearing. At first light we had a really nice 6pt at 50 yards. Kara couldn’t find it in her scope. (Also she had never practiced shooting off-hand) In very poor fashion, I frantically kept telling her to shoot and provided no assistance. No shots were fired and the bull ran off. Another bull was bugling down the hill less than 100 yards away. I told her if the elk start to run, I’m going to shoot... and that’s exactly what happened... and I shot this bull out from under Kara 😬 I basically did everything wrong for taking a first time hunter out. Throw back to spring 2004 guiding at the infamous @rohrerbearcamp on Kodiak Island. Before the season I gazed at the “Rohrer Bear Camp” guide hats with their logo & guide name on the side of the hat.. I asked Mr. Rohrer if I was able to get a hat. He replied NOPE, not until you guide a hunter to a ten foot bear. Well crap I thought... Who knows how long that will take..🙁.. As luck would have it, my hunter & I were extremely fortunate to take a very large old boar on the first day of the hunt around 11:30 am! Due to the position of the bear which was in a ravine, the only way to move the bear to skin would be into the creek of which damned & spilled over the bear. It took until 11 pm to skin & load the wet hide into my pack & start to waddle down the mountain. I radioed to main camp where Sam was eagerly waiting to hear from me. Sam offered to take the boat up the bay & hike up to meet me with the young eager packer Nathen. I wasn’t going to act too proud to let them meet & help me on the pack out.. I was beat..😅 Upon arriving camp, Mr Rohrer was waiting there hands on hips glaring at me.. He said, “ it’s the first day of the hunt.. It had better be a big one..!” I struggled getting the pack out of the boat, hauled it up to the yard & proceeded to unload the hide. After doing so I looked up at Mr. Rohrer face in the beam of the head lamp & he nodded at me. Around 2 am I sat down to eat something before I retired to the guide shack. Mr. Rohrer sat across from me. I looked up & asked him “sir do you think it’s big enough to get a hat? He said, Yes it is.. The old boar was 10’ 3” & the Hat with my name on the side was flown out a couple days later. . . Now, I have to clear this up because Sam (Mr. Rohrer’s Son) always says he gets bigger bears than me to this day...🙄. Regardless please take note the ground is sloping down hill to the right & my hide on the right is actually larger of which you can see with the legs much lower on the A-frame & girth of hide wrapping around the frame on the sides... I’m also the same hight, I must be in a low spot.. I have to defend myself because I sit by Sam at church & this will most likely hopefully silence him next Sunday.. - @cole_ak_kramer on Instagram

According to a new report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the global wildlife population had fallen by a staggering two thirds in less than 50 years. If you do the math, you realize that what were facing is a world where we will have almost no wildlife and other species, insects, plants. And that biodiversity is collapsing worldwide. We may in the future only have things like cows and chickens,” says Raymond Plourde, EAC senior wilderness coordinator. In Nova Scotia, the species at risk include the North Atlantic Right Whale, Wood Turtle, Mainland Moose, Piping Plover and many others. Governments in the Maritimes and Canada need to take immediate action by protecting more wildlife habitats. The suspect was arrested on Saturday afternoon, the 25th August along with three others who were taken into police custody after a SANParks Protection Services, Security Guard, deployed at the Paul Kruger gate, noticed four suspicious persons entering the park in a vehicle. The Security Guard notified SAPS officials who were also deployed at the Gate at the time and the four suspects were handed over to the SAPS and taken into police custody. During follow up investigations by the police a heavy calibre rifle, ammunition and poaching related equipment was recovered. Unfortunately three of the suspects managed to escape from police custody whilst being transported and are currently still at large. The suspect has appeared in court and was identified as Absalom Manyike. He was stationed at Satara and has been employed by SANParks since 2014. He will undergo the organization’s internal disciplinary process in due course. The Managing Executive of the Kruger National Park, Glenn Phillips commended the Protection Services for being vigilant but was disappointed that some of the suspects managed to escape from police custody. “We are glad that we have removed a betrayer from our ranks and will wait for justice to take its course. This should serve as a warning to all staff members who are assisting criminals; we will come after you and the consequence is that you will lose your job and go to jail for a long period” Investigations are still on-going and all attempts are being made to arrest the three escaped suspects. - @sanparksknp on Instagram

After hiking all day, crawling through the snow, shivering all afternoon waiting for a shot. My phone wouldn’t turn on and my camera battery was torched. The Meeteetse Moose Project, led by incoming graduate student Rebecca Levine, is one of our new endeavours in the shop. Well be building on previous work in the Snowy Range by comparing the movement and habitat selection of male and female moose in northwestern Wyoming. We hope that the outcomes of this research will be useful for thhe wildlife biologists who manage these beloved critters! In March, we deployed GPS collars on ten cows and six bulls. Six of the ten cows were pregnant during capture and there was one late spring adult mortality due to malnutrition. This fall, well be checking on cows to see if their calves survived the summer and photographing bulls to track antler growth over the course of the study. - A lot of people dont know this but feral pigs can grow extremely large. When they are at this size they are very dangerous, they have been known to eat entire sheep if they get onto someones property and the meat is no good from these pigs. Pigs are also very aggressive when hungry. So watch out!

I was extremely fortunate to draw a muskox permit in Alaska years ago. This would be my first experience in extreme cold.. The funny thing is the coldest part of our trip was the day we flew in.. We weren’t prepared before hand from the guide about the “airport” which was just a strip surrounded by snow machines in the middle of nowhere... 😂. Getting off the plane the cold slapped us In the face & gripped my hands immediately.. we hustled to prepare our gear for a snow machine ride to the village which was roughly 4 miles away. The wind was ripping & was told it was -45 with windchill much higher. I lost feeling in my hands & face getting my gear on & finding gloves for the ride to town from the airstrip. We had a great hunt taking my bull on the second day of the hunt. The meat was absolutely amazing, I wish I could harvest one every year if possible! All the other hunters & guides had extremely bulky Northern gear on & I had to tell one of the other bow hunters to let down & take off his parka because it was way too bulky & the string would hit the sleeve almost Immediately if he would’ve shot. I was wearing the first generation Sitka Gear Incinerator system. The guides all said I need more layers on.. In reality I had to take other layers off I had underneath while I was working the snow machine.. Regardless it worked flawlessly & it has only improved in the modern Sitka cold weather Blizzard system. - @cole_ak_kramer on Instagram
