Out of the Archives: Sometimes the photos in DEP’s archives don’t have any original captions, so we have to do a little detective work to figure out what they show. A clue to this photo’s date is the poster for Quo Vadis, a 1924 silent film. Other images in this series show similar trenches, one in front of a building with the word “Arverne” above its door, near what look like movie posters. A little research revealed that there’d been an Arverne Theatre on Rockaway Beach Boulevard, with a matching photograph in the NYC Municipal Archives collections, and block and lot numbers allowing us to map it. We also had a feeling that the photos were taken for the Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity, which makes sense because the DWSGE was building water distribution mains and sewers in the Rockaways in 1924. So, here it is: probably water or sewer main construction in the Rockaways, circa 1924, scanned in beautiful detail from an original glass plate negative. Let us know if you recognize anything else in the image! #tbt - @nycwater on Instagram

There are so many wonderful photographs in the Museum’s archives of the horse-drawn vehicles used in Kennebunk in the late 19th and early 20th century. They were essential to move people, goods and information to places railroads and waterways didnt go. Horse-drawn delivery wagons remained in use well into the automobile age. It wasnt unusual to see milk, ice, or produce delivered by horse--especially in smaller towns like Kennebunk. Horses were well suited to the frequent stops and starts along a route and could negotiate poor roads better than early motorized vehicles. Before mechanical refrigeration, many Americans bought their perishable goods on a daily basis so enterprising merchants delivered groceries door-to-door in wagons. Historian Ken Joy gives this account of Charles Shepard who drove a delivery wagon from the railroad station to the stores downtown. “After he loaded his wagon at the station he would climb up to the sea, shake the reins and promptly fall asleep. Without guidance the horse would go down Summer Street, down Main Street into Garden Street and stop at the rear of the Curtis & Roberts grocery store. Charles would wake up and make his deliveries.” In 1902, rural farmers became more connected with the rest of the nation when Congress made rural postal routes--operated in only a few areas beginning in 1896--a permanent part of the postal service. Rural Free Delivery (RFD) was a boon to residents who were previously required to personally collect their mail in the nearest town. Elbridge Smith (1867-1933) used this light-weight mail wagon on his route in West Kennebunk. Many other rural carriers use d similar wagons some set up with a cash box, foot warmer and a small sorting desk inside. Elbridge delivered mail in this cart, now part of the collection of the Brick Store Museum, from 1902-1932 when he retired at 65. - @brickstoremuseum on Instagram

The Greek Genocide (or Ottoman Greek Genocide) refers to the systematic extermination of the native Greek subjects of the Ottoman Empire before, during and after World War I (1914-1923). It was instigated by two successive governments of the Ottoman Empire; i.e. the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) party, and the Turkish Nationalist Movement of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. It included massacres, forced deportations and death marches, summary expulsions, boycotts, rape, forced conversion to Islam, conscription into labor battalions, arbitrary executions, and destruction of Christian Orthodox cultural, historical and religious monuments. According to various sources, approximately 1 million Ottoman Greeks perished during this period. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #linkinbio for full story ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #hellenicnews #hellenicnewsofamerica #greekgenocide #neverforget #greek #omogeneia - @hellenicnewsofamerica on Instagram

FRANK SCHUMAN Developed in Northeast Philadelphia’s Tacony neighborhood in the early 20th Century, Shuman’s “Sun Engine” is a poignant reminder that while humanity has been slow to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have certainly not lacked the technology, or foresight, to do so. On the expansive lawn between an ivy-covered house and workshop at Disston and Ditman Streets, Shuman integrated his deep knowledge of glass, optics, and convection heating to create a powerful array capable of doing actual work. Tacony was a center for technological revolution during the period between 1890 and 1920. Frank Shuman was a world famous inventor who lived at Disston and Ditman Streets. Scientific American visited this community multiple times for such innovations as the casting of the mammoth statue of William Penn and all the domework adorning Philadelphias City Hall. This project was overseen by Francis Schumann, President of the Tacony Iron and Metal Company, the uncle of the inventor. Much attention was brought to this community as a result of Shumans numerous inventions, including wire glass and a gas mask so durable it was used in World War I. Shuman also was notable for solar power, having a solar powered engine on display during sunny days between 1907 and 1909. He later oversaw the worlds first solar energy plant in Egypt which pumped 6,000 gallons of irrigation water per minute. “One thing I feel sure of,” he wrote prophetically in a 1914 Scientific American article, “is that the human race must finally utilize direct sun power or revert to barbarism.” Based on the output of his device, he reasoned that an array covering 20,250 square miles in an unpopulated portion of Africa’s Sahara Desert would produce the same amount of energy as all of the coal mined in 1909. Displaying an understanding of the social value of solar, he urged “…all far-sighted engineers and inventors to work in this direction” not only for their own profit but “the eternal welfare of the human race”. #SAWTOWNUSA #DISSTON #TACONYVSGLOBALWARMING #HISTORICALTACONY - @tacony_19135 on Instagram

Seattle’s Chinatown/International District has a complex history, stemming from decades of immigration and the hand-in-hand racism that came along with it. Since the conception of this district, there has always been some portion of the population that has suffered through the discrimination of others—namely white Americans. Starting in 1886, the Seattle Anti-Chinese Riot, during which “two weeks in white Seattleites rounded up the city’s Chinese residents, forced them onto ships and boxcars and shipped them north and south. By the end of it, a community of hundreds had been reduced to a few dozen” (Pulkkinen). For this reason, the Chinatown over here is less established than similar communities, such as Portland. Of course, the Chinese population has not been the only population discriminated against. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, the vast majority of Chinatown’s Japanese population were forcibly removed to the internment camps. During their absence, “Chinese and Filipino workers and shops filled the need for services while the Japanese were gone for three years,” which kept this area alive (Densho). However, the numerous Japanese businesses and residences dwindled, and many people were not able to return to their homes or jobs once released; many employers and neighbors were openly hostile and did not want to be associated with Japanese-Americans. Unfortunately, while modern times have reduced the number of racist sentiments, longtime residents of the International District still face discrimination. This time, it is due to financial reasons—Seattle’s booming housing market and development have led to forced evictions as developers buy up older parts of the area. This gentrification has caused grief among citizens like Tai Fung Chin, who was “forced out of her apartment in Seattles International District back in 2015. But she didnt want to leave the neighborhood…’Because of the language barrier, this is like China — everybody speaks the same language so, they dont have any choice’ (KUOW). These actions don’t only hurt the current residents of this neighborhood, but also trample over the historic significance of the area. For example, Chinatown - @internationaldistrict206 on Instagram

It is so peacefully hopeful to see photos of early Black Americans in rural farm settings and they’ve become my favorite types of photos to collect. I actually was gifted a similar photo of my great grandfather and his parents that Ill share one day! These types of photos beam with pride at what they accomplished and built with their hands! I image that in this photo, as far as their eyes could see, they saw fields of plenty. Corn, collards, butter beans, okra, squash, and sweet potatoes. Many Black American families in the south owned hundreds of acres in the early 1900’s that allowed them to insulate themselves with self sufficiency and opportunities for generations. Our early #Blackfarmers were some of our first business men and they understood the importance of land and inheritance. For them, land was a source of #freedom. We can only image the constant challenges southern Black farmers of the 19th and 20th centuries, many who had experienced slavery first hand, had to face daily to keep their land. The day to day tasks of planting, reaping, managing debts and taxes before quickbooks and keeping their children connected to the land had to be very challenging. I can imagine the satisfaction they must have felt from working their own land and knowing their toiling was not for the benefit of anyone else except their own families and communities. There had to be great satisfaction that rested in their souls from knowing their land had their FREE blood, sweat and tears embedded in the soil. Working and hopeful that not only did they plant crops for that moments harvest, but to know they had left seeds that would be reaped for the generations to come. #blackhistory #vintagephotos #ADOS #blackamericana #blackarchive #blackamerican - @black.archive on Instagram

This Saturday, October 3, 2020, marks the 160th anniversary of the Wide Awakes Grand Procession for emancipation. In 1860, the #WideAwakes, a group of young abolitionists who advocated for the election of Abraham Lincoln, held massive torchlight parades around the country—in New York, Chicago, Boston, and Cleveland—banding together to ensure the freedom of enslaved peoples. Inspired by the 1860 Wide Awakes, @wideawakes2020 takes a cue from this band of abolitionist dreamers and widens the lens. On October 3, #WideAwakesDay, our global grand procession will celebrate joy and civic participation, online and in cities across the world. US postage stamp. Scott #2838h (1994) World War II - Road to Victory Red Ball Express By August 1944, it was clear the Normandy invasion had been a huge success. Pursuing quickly retreating Germans, the Allied troops had come within 100 miles of Paris. However, the armies faced one basic problem - they had outrun the supply lines linking them to the Normandy beaches. Unless the Allies could bridge the gap separating the supplies in Normandy and the troops, the Germans would have a chance to regroup and Paris would be lost. The solution was the Red Ball Express. Given the railroad nickname for a high-priority shipment, this long-haul supply system operated over a one-way set of roads to deliver bulk supplies each day to Patton’s and Hodges’ Armies. When the express began on August 25th, it provided 75 tons of supplies per day. As the pursuit continued, the effort was expanded to include 5,400 trucks carrying over 8,200 tons each day over round-trip routes of up to 686 miles. By mid-November the critical need for emergency long-haul operations across northern France was over, and the service was disbanded on November 16, 1944. During its 81 days of service, the Red Ball Express had provided the 1st and 3rd Armies with 3.5 tons of supplies a minute. #stamp #stamps #usps #postagestamps #mail #stampcollecting #snailmail #philatelic #philately #stampcollection #stampcollector #1994 #worldwarii #war #wwii - @stampcollecting on Instagram

Happy National Public Lands Day! Check out these historic photos of Montezuma Well! #TodayILearned that Montezuma Well did not become part of Montezuma Castle National Monument until 1947. Before that, it was owned by the Back family. The previous owner of the Well bought the land for one horse, and later sold it to the Backs for two horses, which “doubled his profit.” We think this place is worth much more than that today! National Public Lands Day is a day to participate in service projects to help your national parks like Montezuma Well continue to thrive. - My grand dad on his farm in Germany circa 1950

The Abraham Trostle Farm was greatly impacted by the battle. The stand of the 9th Massachusetts Battery on July 2 left the property in tatters, including a shell hole in the barn that is still there today. The damage to the property impacted the Trostle family for years after the battle as they searched for a way to recoup their loses. Catherine Trostle, Abraham Trostle’s wife, went to a notary to file her claim on October 20, 1868 since she could not read or write. She represented the family since Abraham was admitted into a lunatic asylum after the war. In her testimony, she stated there were over 100 horses across the yard and the home was used as a field hospital, signing her statement with an x. Also included in the damage claim was 16 tons of hay, 20 acres of oats and corn lost, 2000 fence rails, and destruction of the farm lane. According to the claim, Catherine cited $3,344.77 ($61,025.82 today) worth of property damage to her $5,200 ($95,181.24) estate. Agent A. F. Nye, the claims agent assigned, was extremely hesitant to give a definite answer to Catherine’s claim. He argued that he had no eyewitnesses to attest for any of the damage was caused by Union forces. The claim investigation lasted until February 2, 1882. Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs ultimately decided “the nature of damages from ordinary casualties of war, and not within the jurisdiction of the Quarter Master General under Act of July 4, 1864, and the claim therefor is not allowed.” Catherine Trostle filed multiple claims over 10 years for $3,344.77, she never received a cent. #battlefieldbuildings #findyourpark #gettysburgnationalmilitarypark - @gettysburgnps on Instagram

Repost from @hankwillisthomas • This Saturday, October 3, 2020, marks the 160th anniversary of the Wide Awakes Grand Procession for emancipation. The Louis BIllard Hall was Oceanside’s first bar. Dating back to 1886, it was the saloon of choice for cowboys, land owners, outlaws and sheriffs. It was located at present-day Harney Sushi (Cleveland and Mission). Next door was the office of J. Chauncey Hayes, the real estate agent who sold much of the lots in early Oceanside. - @oceansidehistoricalsociety on Instagram
