From Wikipedia: A Formal Disgrace was an American alternative emo outfit from Superior, Colorado. In 2006 they released their self-titled EP on MySpace, which infamously caused all residents of Superior and the neighboring town of Louisville to erupt in a flash flood of diarrhea due to an infrasonic frequency that caused anyone within earshot to lose control of their bowels (see ‘brown note’). It is estimated that more than 12,000 residents were affected. “We played our EP through the sound system in Andre Lepine’s dad’s home theater, which had this crazy loud subwoofer. I guess one of the notes in our song ‘Meow’ had some weird bass frequency in it, and when it hit all of us suddenly started making mud in our gym shorts. It was cool.” - Parker Richard of A Formal Disgrace, 2007 A Formal Disgrace disbanded shortly after the #hotbrownrain incident, stating creative differences as the reasoning behind the split. Bassist Ricky Shine went on to start a successful solo dubstep project, Shattered Sphincter, while Parker Richard and Nick Layne branched off with their own dad rock band, The Golden Browns. This photo was taken in the earlier days of my drug addiction. I have virtually no pictures from this time period; I threw them all away many years ago. I was high here, but still functional, with a job and social life. I was not yet dealing, dating drug dealers, cutting myself, or near-overdosing on the floor at parties. Not yet. Soon. Tuesday night, I watched the President attempt to discredit his opponent by shaming his son Hunter, and his history of drug addiction. My first thought: This is deplorable, even by his standards. My second—an unexpected flash of shame and fear; echoes of mostly-resolved but still present questions of self-worth and value tied to my past. In that moment, the President was also condemning me. Mocking me. Attacking me. The leader of our country thinks I should be ashamed of my history with addiction and mental health struggles. That my parents should be ashamed, too. I reject his condemnation. I reject the stigma he is perpetuating. In other words, f*** that. I am one of 21 million Americans who (in my case, after childhood trauma) found my teenage self navigating depression, anxiety, and self-harming behaviors, then drawn into the cycle of addiction as a means of coping. I spent five long, deeply damaging years there before I pulled myself out and took my life back. I’m not ashamed. I will not be condemned. I’m proud of who I was then, and how hard I worked to save my own life, surviving as best as I could with the poor tools I had. And I’m proud of who I am now and the person I have become, thanks in no small part to those struggles. I know my parents feel the same way as Joe Biden, because they have told me. They are proud of me, and they always were. They loved me then, and they love me now. I am secure in that, and in that, I am lucky. So to anyone who was hurt by that man’s despicable words, I will remind you: I am proud of you, and you are loved. Then and now, you are worthy. And no one, not even the President of the United States, can tell you otherwise. RJ was a pioneer of creativity in my young life within the confines of our small hometown. He was so thoughtful and motivated and considerate. He inspired me and many of my best friends to look beyond what was given to us and reach for the worlds we imagined beyond the mundane. He took me with his band on my first road trip out of CA when I was 17. I promptly lost his bass two days into a several week tour and he characteristically shrugged it off (at least outwardly haha) and stayed focused on the road ahead of us. Just one anecdote of many I could share, where RJ offered me an opportunity to explore uncharted territory and put his trust in me by taking me along on the adventures he worked so hard to materialize. RJ shared some old photos and recordings with me last week. I’ll be spending time with those and remembering some of the best memories of my life; experiences that wouldn’t have been possible without the effort and sacrifices he made, and that were invaluable to my growth. Hey everyone! hope you are all doing okay with everything going on in the world right now. Thought maybe this post would bring you a smile or a laugh. I’ve been using some of this time off to go through TONS of storage, and I found some really great stuff in every category. One of those categories being some photos and mementos from my years in highschool, and the years when MIW first started. Had to group them together to get the most, so heres a description of what you’re seeing. 1. Unreleased solo from our first MIW photoshoot. We didn’t have any photographer friends, so we had to go to the same place I had my senior pictures done the year before. Was super awkward, and the pics are even more awkward haha. My friend Steve used to call us “Motionless In White Belts.” HOLY MYSPACE. 2. Top - Some of you may know the name ‘New Car Smell”. For those of you who don’t, this was my first band. Started in 2002. This was our first logo. The fucking anarchy symbol HAHA. Kill me. Bottom - Some of my senior pictures. The Gibson Les Paul was my grandfathers guitar. 3. A newspaper write up and ticket from MIW’s first big show ever: opening for Senses Fail in 2005. I had to call the promoter every day for a month and beg to be on this show and he finally cracked. I have yet to ask him if he remembers this at all every time I see him these days. Thanks, Stan! 4. My badge from working at Pacsun in the second half of the 2000’s. At one point, everyone in the band except for Angelo worked there and I have no idea how we were able to do that and play weekend shows at the same time. I also joined a grind band playing guitar for one of our Pacsun managers, Rev Mike. 5. Top left - My 18th birthday. Went to get an industrial piercing before going to see Thrice and Thursday that night, only to get the piercing punched out in the pit haha. (Peep that Atreyu shirt @thebrandonsaller!) Bottom Left - Day I got my second tattoo. Bottom Right - 2004. One of the few photos of my days as “Chris from toys” at Walmart. I was fired after 2 years. Not hard to see why haha.
