PASSINGS: STEVE GROSSMAN Someone jokingly commented that Liebman-Grossman sounded like a law firm!! For sure we were tight in the early 70s, even trading the saxophone chairs with the Elvin Jones and Miles Davis’ Groups. We WERE the happening sax players in the early ‘70s rooted in first generation post-Coltrane. Steve was the most talented of the “Jewish mafia” (Mike Brecker, Bob Berg, Grossman and myself). Legend has it that Steve’s older trumpet-playing brother got him into practicing and transcribing at first Bird, followed by Trane. By the time Steve was 15 years old, he sounded more like the originals than they did. Plus he played more than acceptable drums, bass and piano. With Miles, Steve was replacing Wayne Shorter, a pretty heavy load for an 18 year old guy. Musically, he and I were trying to deal with pentatonics and chromaticism, pushing the tenor into other sonic areas. We played quite a bit of free jazz in my midtown loft during those years. For a time we even roomed together. The next decades found Steve doing one-nighters and the like in Europe, kind of slipping through the New York jazz cracks. He got into Newk, while staying the course of upholding the bebop tradition. We had a lot of fun together, especially in Elvin’s group with the addition of bassist Gene Perla. The ”Live At The Lighthouse” recording remains as a testament to Steve and myself reaching forth.Talking raw talent, that was Steve Grossman to the tee!! - @dave_liebman on Instagram

Charlie Parker stuck out in my mind. Parker didnt perform like his black predecessors, he typified rebellion, what some people might call militancy. Here was a black artist who played and didnt exhibit any aspects of the happy darkie playing. Black people, entertainers (before the early 50s) were supposed to entertain more than play. They had to sing and dance. But Parker forced people to listen. They had to say, `Wow, this is great music, and he isnt smiling and singing and dancing. I remember as a kid I saw Little Richard on TV. He was so amazing I did an impression of him at school the classroom just because. I was always the quiet kid but he gave me confidence to sing and dance for people. I will never get my first praise and I never forget that it was because of him that inspired me. Thank you Little Richard for all the music you created that influenced generations of music without them knowing. RIP 🙏🏾 - @mrjbrownmusic on Instagram

Satchmo, But You Can Call Me, Pops I used to address him as Mr. Armstrong, because, I felt, he deserved my respect; but he told me, ‘Naw, man, it’s Louis, (sort of adding a hiss at the end of it); now, most people call me, Satchmo, but my friends, they call me, Pops. And since I now consider you my friend, you can just call me, Pops, too-- no more, no less’ (sort of adding a hiss at the end of it) So, I did, because, how could I not? He called me his friend, and I tell ya, almost more than being able to hear Pops play, is having him call you his friend. And I loved hearing the man play. He would tell me, ‘I got to keep up my chops, (sort of adding a hiss at the end of it) that’s what’s got me where I am today’ And he proceeded to play me a tune, right there, where we were sitting, and I tell ya, hearing Pops play, you might as well be listening to the angel Gabriel, because it’s something magical, something spiritual, yet earthly and funky and raw all at the same time. That’s who Pops was to me, still is to me, as I choose to remember him, dropping knowledge on a young boy, not quite yet a man, still trying to find his way, still trying to find his own chops. He told me, ‘Always look out for your chops, (sort of adding a hiss at the end of it) you never know where they might take you. Look at me.’ Thanks, Pops, for giving me the chance to look at you and for calling me your friend. © 2014 Joseph Powell - @thespiritofbaldwincompelsme on Instagram

Trilha sonora para um domingo cinzento. Miles, Kind of Blue, lançado em agosto de 1959. O time: Julian Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, James Cobb, Wynton Kelly e Bill Evans. - @jimijoe007 on Instagram

“Charley Parker, the great sax star who comes out to the Sunset next Sunday, who is the first outstanding musician of the west to break from the so-called “Western” Rhythm style to create something entirely new. That’s exactly what has happened in the case of bebop, of which Parker is one of the most outstanding exponents. It turned out that I and my friend Barrett were welcome to come backstage as well. We were escorted into an empty room about an hour before the show, and in a minute or so, Bruce pops in the door, enthusiastically grabs each of us in a handshake, makes sure he knows our names, and we start yakking away. Dana is the alpha male here because he controls what the station plays, but Bruce makes sure to include Barrett and me in the conversation, which lasted 20 minutes or more. He couldnt have been nicer or more welcoming. We were all kind of blown away to be honest. Even Dana who had met dozens of major players in the music biz! Oh by the way, the show was spectacular! His shows were not yet the marathon 4 hour spectacles they morphed into later, but he played about 25 songs. Critics have said this tour was the impetus for him reaching major stardom. SJCFTPA was a 2,400 seat venue. It was the last time I would see him in such a small place. - @chbradfo on Instagram

THE WINDRUSH GENERATION Today marks when The Empire Windrush arrived into Tilbury Docks, bringing with it just over 1000 West Indians from the Caribbean Islands, on June 22nd 1948. Britain called upon it’s Commonwealth territories to fill it’s severe lack of labour force after World War 2 to help rebuild the country; many being ex-servicemen who fought for Britain in the war. The British Government promised citizenship, prosperity and employment for those who came, this saw an estimated half a million West Indians between 1948 and 1970 including my own grandparents and parents, travel 8000 miles from the Caribbean to begin a new life here in the UK. Despite suffering unimaginable racism across the country they persevered and helped to rebuild a country that has BARELY recognised their contribution. Fast forward to 2019 the anniversary was bittersweet, as around the same time it became clear that the Windrush generation were rewarded for their essential contributions by them finding themselves on the wrong side of immigration laws thanks to Theresa May’s “hostile environment policies”. Many were detained, denied legal rights and illegally deported. TILL THIS DAY no apology has been received from the home office and little to no justice served. I am a proud descendant of this generation and I stand on your shoulders. Thank you for all that you did despite the discrimination you endured. It is my duty to fight until the day that racial equality, truth and justice is known for us all...I owe you this much 🖤👊🏾✊🏾🇧🇧🇬🇾🇬🇧 • • • • • • #repost @nathalieemmanuel 🙏🏾 #TheWindrushGeneration #TheWindrushScandal #BlackBritishHistory #EternallyGrateful - @hurcs on Instagram

“The first Charlie Parker number I heard was called Blue Bird. I was blown away by the propulsion, the charisma, and the joyful spirit of it. Also the stellar saxophone playing, which technically is on the highest level. There was a completeness to it, which I’ve spent my whole life trying to emulate – which is nothing to do with imitation, because my style is very different. It has the balanced quality of all the great art that I really love. It’s as much intellectual as it is soulful, it speaks to sorrow and it speaks to joy, with a undertone of compassionate humour. There’s something so human about what Charlie Parker does.” Rudresh Mahanthappa. ********************************* #charlieparker #birdlives #yardbird #jazz #bebop #altosax #birdland - @yardbirdlives on Instagram

- @jimijoe007 on Instagram

Dakamana lyric excerpt: ‘It’s time for us to work together, hand and hand And make 2020 a definitive year for peace in Mali The Malian people are exhausted; They no longer believe in the future of this country. Malians are disillusioned; theyre waiting for the truth. Its time to stop and think And make sure that 2020 is a year of peace in Mali. - - #afelbocoum #desertblues #mali #lyrics - @afelbocoumofficial on Instagram

- @aureavie on Instagram

MILES DAVIS, KIND OF BLUE my #5 in the album challenge, no particular order, you must have this in your collection for anytime of the day. It always satisfies. Everyone has heard the name Miles but so many never stop and listen. This is a good time to do just that. Also recommended: Bitches Brew, Get Up with It and the Jack Johnson sound track. Blessed to have had Miles in our life. #milesdavis #kindofblue - @dzpresents on Instagram

Happy birthday Bud Powell! Born in Harlem in 1924, the celebrated pianist and composer began his musical education at home with his father, who also played piano. Powell was taken under Thelonious Monks wing (the older pianist would write the song In Walked Bud for his friend) and came to prominence playing with Sarah Vaughan, Fats Navarro, Dexter Gordon, and many others. In 1947, he recorded his first session as leader alongside Max Roach and Curly Russell; not long after, he joined Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Tommy Potter for a session led by Charlie Parker. Powell cemented his role as one of bebops pioneers, continuing to record and perform until his life was tragically cut short. Speaking on Powells talents Miles Davis said, Bud was a genius piano player–the best there was of all the bebop piano players. - @jazzdotorg on Instagram

To anyone who says they can’t draw I ask the question, how much are you willing to suffer to make art? People suffer all the time for their appearance or for money. This art game is like that... at times an agonizing mental and physical struggle. We see the results and we equate it to talent. I’d say it’s actually more about sacrifice. So many people say they don’t like Jazz.. but they haven’t put in the time to understand it. It’s really beautiful music. This piece is available for sale, drawing in black and white - India ink on Arches aquarella paper 12.5 x 17.5”.
