Where do you like to hike? Along the river? On some of our high bluffs? Down in some of the deep, dark hollows where roaring waterfalls may hide? There are more than 100 miles of trails at Buffalo National River that may lead you to these very kinds of places. But there are also quieter places, places off the beaten path where you may go to find solitude, reflection, and peace. You may also find a touch of our history, a small piece of those folks who were here before us. A good way to find these out-of-the-way places is to follow the old roads that folks used so many years ago. Most of them are still there if you take the time to look. These old road traces lead you back through history to another time. Scroll through these photographs for a sneak peek of an old route through the Upper Buffalo Wilderness! The Austin-Wherritt House c.1903. This elaborate home was originally built for John Ezra and Sarah (Sadie) Austin by local stonemason Herbert Clegg. The beautiful sandstone home was one of the finest homes in the city. John Austin moved to Heber City in 1893 and became a very successful livestock dealer and rancher. The Austin family only lived in the home a few years before leaving to pursue further livestock business in Wyoming. In 1908 the town doctor William Russell Wherritt and his wife Emma purchased the home for their family. Dr. Wherritt was well known and respected for the 49 years he worked as a physician in Heber City. Many of those years he was the only doctor in town and was always available for the community. He served as the quarantine physician for many years as well as the railroad doctor. He had an office in his home, but most often would make house calls. His wife Emma was also very involved in community affairs and was chosen Utah “mother of the year” in 1961. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and still remains in the Wherritt family. It remains very much the same and has been meticulously cared for by the members of the family. Today is Juneteenth – a celebration created in 1865 to commemorate the eradication of American slavery and is today a holiday to highlight the successes and contributions of African Americans across the nation. For this week’s Hometown Adventures that falls on #Juneteenth, we want to highlight some of these successes in our own region. We want to bring you beyond the Blue Line to the U.S. Canada border in #Waddington, where Black history and entrepreneurship converge with Isaac Johnson, a prominent African American stone mason and master builder. Johnson made his way north, started a family, and made a name for himself as a master craftsman and mason between Northern New York and Ontario, all after casting off the shackles of bondage and his enslavers in Kentucky and enlisting and serving in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Today, his lasting contributions remain in places like Waddington, where the 1884 Town Hall and the elegant Presbyterian Church stand as testaments not only to Johnson’s skill, but to Black excellence in the North Country. The HLPUSD School District is transitioning from at-large elections to by-trustee area elections. This means the district will form 5 different boundaries and the elected officials must live within the set area and will represent the schools in the boundary while also moving policies forward that are great for the entire district. This is great for residents of La Puente (both incorporated and unincorporated) because there could be more representation but only IF the map scenario that’s chosen covers a good portion of the LP area and makes equitable sense. This marker is a bit confusing for me. John O. Martell was killed in 1861 at age 18. I can find zero information on him. Even his FindaGrave entry says he was a civil war soldier (note the Union carved into his stone and the flag) BUT the civil war didn’t start until April of that year, he was killed in February. James and I had a lot planned in March. We had just finished playing intimate shows in Philly, NYC, and Asbury Park, trying new songs in front of people for the first time and entering discussions with studios to record our second full length album. We looked forward to recording and driving around America as we have for the last nine years. But we all know we live in a different world, for now. In July, the Philly Folksong Society reached out and invited us to play the Festival, along with over 100 superstars and other upcoming acts. 6 months after we shut down production, we dusted off our lonely equipment, convened in James new lean-to, and recorded a one-take live set. Its out today (u kn0 where 2 find it). 3 new songs, including our new single Half Light, plus two older songs. Thanks to the band for dreaming this up with us, Chelsea and her crew for shooting in 97 degree heat, Ro for simultaneously engineering and performing, and everyone who safely, distantly made this film come to life in times of plague and unrest. The climax is when the pipa finally plays the cello’s theme while the cello supports, signifying that a real connection has been made. The first day we opened our doors of El Fuego was one of our most exciting days but also one of our most nerve wrecking days. The ruling of the Breonna Taylor case is heartbreaking. Especially after all the attention that her story has received since March 13th when she was fatally shot by the LMPD officers, Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankinson, and Myles Cosgrove while sleeping in her home. After screaming her name in the streets over the past few months, it really sucks that this was the outcome. The people around me, as well as myself are hurt. But what can we do? The system wasnt created for all of us to flourish, it was created for some of us to be oppressed. At the end of the day, these are our lives were dealing with...it couldve been any of us being killed at the hands of the police, so we have no choice but to continue fighting for EQUALITY OF ALL PEOPLE. Not only for us, but for our kids, and generations to come. I couldnt imagine trying to raise a child in the current climate of our country and having these tough conversations with them. I just wish there was a way we could all come together for the sake of humanity. Things feel so helpless right now. I hope theres a positive turn with police brutality here sooner than later. In 1925 Charlotte Lawrenson was finishing up this painting Girl Knitting, while Dr. Alain LeRoy Locke published a groundbreaking work of literature entitled The New Negro. This anthology describes the renaissance happening in America at the time-- based out of Harlem, NY. It contains poetry, fiction, and political analysis of the black condition and experience in America. This movement would become commonly known to history as the Harlem Renaissance. Before becoming the father of the Harlem Renaissance, Locke was already a pioneer in his own right but also came from a long line of Black pioneers. Born in Philadelphia in 1885 to parents who were both free Black people before the Civil War, Locke’s father was the first Black employee of the United States Postal Service and his mother was a teacher and literature lover. Locke graduated from Harvard and became the first black Rhodes Scholar and headed to Oxford to continue his studies. He was denied admission to a few of the colleges there and was ostracized because of his race but did ultimately make a name for himself studying philosophy. He returned to Harvard and earned his PhD in 1918. As a faculty member at Howard University Locke was dismissed after stirring the pot to get equal compensation for Black and White professors, but was later re-hired when the first Black president of Howard was appointed. He went on to teach at Howard for some thirty years until he retired in 1953. Locke was never married but his relationship with young Langston Hughes was no secret. His writings (as far as I know, I haven’t read everything) explore his black identity more than sexuality. I wonder if he were living today what kind of writings he would make and if that would be a more central part of his legacy. He was revered as a visionary by his contemporaries and students, but also after his death. Dr. Martin Luther King remarked that “the only philosophers that lived were not Plato and Aristotle, but W.E.B Du Bois and Alain Locke came through the universe.” Came through he did, and what a way he paved for black and/or queer people who would come after him and stand confidently in his legacy. - @darcidoesit on Instagram

SCHOOLCRAFT, MI- (my hometown) established in 1831 as the first settlement in Kalamazoo, before Michigan was a state. In 1835 a home was built in our village to protect, feed, house, hide, and help 1500 slaves get to freedom in Canada. Our Underground Railroad house still stands and our schools make a point to teach its history. YET!! In 2020-our village population is 94% white and is home to many that wouldn’t consider themselves an ally with the black community. Yesterday as we stood for black lives on our highway, I couldn’t help but cry as people yelled profanities, flipped us off, slowed down just to stick their 👎🏻 out the window, drove by multiple times with their flags, spewing exhaust in our faces, and even painted “stop BLM” on their cars for us to see. This village was always meant to be an ally for every race, every culture, every human. We will PROTECT our brothers and sisters of color and WELCOME them to our home with open arms. Stand up in your communities and DON’T STOP! Our black children should not have to suffer the evils that I saw yesterday. We will make a change here in our community. Black. Lives.
