Conflict between humans and animals is rarely a tale of simplicity. When wild habitat is razed, people and animals must compete for the same resources. Insects, birds and other small creatures often die out without us ever knowing. But some animals, like elephants, lions and chimps do what thousands of years of evolution has hardwired them to do: survive. Unfortunately the people making the decisions to raze land rarely consider the consequences on communities who now have to grapple with these new, often violent, dynamics. In Uganda, chimps and humans are facing the brunt of these decisions in a tale playing out across many wild spaces all over the world. Follow photographer @ronan_donovan who documented these fraught, complex and conflicting dynamics in Uganda over several years. In order to maintain genetic diversity, the females will leave their family at puberty and go find another community of chimps where theyll live out the rest of their lives. ⁣ I find it so fascinating that in such a social and bonded species like chimps that after 16 years the females will never see their family every again. Sampai saat ini status kritis atau critically endangered ini ditetapkan oleh International Union for Conservation of Nature terhadap satwa ini. Selain itu kehilangan habitat dan perburuan liar menjadi pemicu lain populasi Orangutan menurun. Saat ini populasi Orangutan menurun drastis hingga 50 persen selama 20 tahun terakhir. Our friends at Orangutan Foundation shared these beautiful photos and story: First-time mother Suwita has proven to be such a doting and protective carer these past weeks, so much so that it has been tricky for our field team to take a clear photograph and identify the sex of her new infant. Now though, were very pleased to announce that he been identified as a young male orangutan and given the name Samuel. Whats even more wonderful about these photos is that Suwita herself was born in the wild, near Camp Rasak in the Lamandau Reserve in 2009. Shes one of four new mothers that the Orangutan Foundation team have been monitoring. Today is World Gorilla Day 🦍 . In the 1980s, on the brink of extinction, only 242 mountain gorillas were left around the Virunga mountains. Today, over 600 individuals call these mountains home and together with Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest population, mountain gorilla numbers have surpassed 1,000 individuals for the first time in almost a century and the IUCN reclassified the species from critically endangered to endangered in 2018. . The genus Gorilla is divided into two species: the eastern gorillas and the western gorillas (both critically endangered), and either four or five subspecies. They are the largest living primates. In addition to covering culture and ancient history, I spend a lot of the year photographing animals. My degree is in Environmental Archaeology which focuses on the relationship between humans and their environment, and as an anthropologist I am fascinated with how this has changed over time. This is Tinfayo, the lead (and only) silverback of Mishaya group in Bwindi. On Sept. 24th, he was reported missing from the group & the following morning trackers found him severely injured. Dr. Ricky rushed out to conduct a visual health assessment and found Tinfayo with several deep cuts on his face, neck, shoulders & hands, most likely the result of fighting with another silverback. Despite heavy rain, Dr. Ricky was able to successfully administer antibiotics & pain medication via dart. Two days post-treatment, Tinfayo was feeding and moving around. And on Monday, Dr. Ricky observed Tinfayo doing significantly better, moving a great distance to rejoin the group. Tinfayo means I dont care and his name was very fitting when he rejoined the group - while the females displayed with excitement, Tinfayo seemed indifferent. 😆🦍 We will keep you posted on his healing progress. Thank yall so much for the outpouring of support, flowers, and cards these past few days since the loss of our gorilla infant. Our Audubon family is still processing this loss, but each kind comment and gesture means the world to us. Many of you have asked how Tumani is doing. Tumani is doing well. She is eating regularly, napping, and foraging with the rest of the troop. She is also participating in daily training sessions with her caregivers. Animal care staff are still monitoring Tumani and the troop regularly for behavioral changes. Their well-being is our number one priority. Today is World Gorilla Day 🦍 Visiting the endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park was a lifetime highlight for Lightfoot Travel’s Cofounder (and African guru) @nicoheath 📸 These gentle giants in Rwanda are protected with incredible conservation work by Lightfoot Travel’s partners at Bisate Lodge and also the community work by Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge. They both underpin the strategy of the Rwandan Government by working to bring the community into the story to prevent poaching. Since 1991 the mountain gorilla is the only great ape increasing in population and is a conservation story that continues due to the tourism that helps protect it. With over 1000 now in residence, here’s hoping this work continues well into the future and can act as inspiration for further conservation efforts. GORILLAFAMILIE De gorillafamilie in Diergaarde Blijdorp is uitgebreid met een nieuw gorillajong. Tamani is de moeder en dit is haar zesde jong. Het pasgeboren jong is een mannetje en hij heet Thabo. In Afrika betekent dit ‘vreugde’. De vader van alle jongen is de bekende Bokito. Zijn familieclan bestaat nu uit drie vrouwen, vijf dochters, twee zonen en een aangenomen zoon. Bokito houdt zich niet bezig met de opvoeding van de jongen. Met zijn indrukwekkende verschijning zorgt hij voor rust in de groep en een veilig klimaat voor alle familieleden. Tamani is een zorgzame moeder. Ze heeft zich met volle overgave op haar moederrol gestort. Ze laat de kleine goed drinken en wiegt hem af en toe in slaap. Tamani heeft ook een dochter van twee jaar, Tonka. Die moet nog wel wennen aan haar nieuwe broertje, die alle aandacht van haar moeder opeist. Gelukkig krijgt ze veel steun van haar grote zus Thirza. De hele familie, inclusief de nieuwste aanwinst, zijn met mooi weer buiten te bewonderen en met slecht weer binnen. In het wild worden gorilla’s ernstig bedreigd, vooral door vernietiging van hun natuurlijk leefgebied: het tropisch regenwoud. Mijnbouw is bijvoorbeeld een groot probleem met een verwoestend effect op het biotoop en de aantallen (oostelijke) gorilla’s. Het gaat hierbij vooral om het winnen van de metaalerts coltan, een onmisbaar onderdeel in mobiele telefoons en laptops. Blijdorp wil de gorilla’s helpen. Iedereen kan ook meehelpen en zijn oude mobieltje bij de Diergaarde inleveren. Vervolgens wordt die gerecycled. Zo hoeft er minder mijnbouw te worden gepleegd en kun je meehelpen aan de bescherming van het leefgebied van de gorilla’s. Je oude mobiel is dan ook een mooi kraam-cadeau bij een bezoek aan de Diergaarde. Je kunt deze inleveren in de verzamelbak bij het gorilla-buitenverblijf. The Zoo is home to 8 Critically Endangered western lowland gorillas, including HJ, the latest addition to our bachelor group, and baby Angela, who lives with her mother, father, and aunties in our family group. In Africa, gorilla habitat is being destroyed by unsustainable mining for coltan, a mineral used in the manufacture of handheld electronic devices. Recycling electronics responsibly decreases the demand for coltan, thereby reducing mining and keeping toxins out of the environment. When you recycle handheld electronics through our partner ECO-CELL at the L.A. Zoo, a portion of the proceeds go to conservation nonprofits such as Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE), which works to safeguard the Grauer’s gorilla, one of the most endangered primates on the planet. The rehabilitation process of an orphan chimpanzee is not easy. Each individual is different, sometimes the psychological trauma is stronger, making also the physical recovery more difficult. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka was Uganda’s first wildlife vet and, since winning her Whitley Gold Award and multiple rounds of Continuation Funding, she has become an internationally important conservationist. Just in time for World Gorilla Day, a Bwindi baby boom: Five mountain gorillas were recently born over the course of just a few weeks in Ugandas Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The births come as welcome news for a gorilla population stricken by troubles and tragedy in recent months. . As the COVID-19 pandemic caused ecotourism activities to be suspended earlier this year, rangers and other park staff were forced to cut back on their activities due to budgetary constraints. Then, in June, the park lost one of its best known residents, the silverback Rafiki, to poaching. But as @faunafloraint explains, the string of new births point to a brighter future for Bwindis mountain gorillas. . At the Saint Louis Zoo we are dedicated to caring for animals, and that includes providing high quality care throughout their lifetime. For chimpanzees and other apes, this can be quite a long time, and individual animals have different requirements throughout their lives. With a multi-generational group and preparing for the birth of an infant chimpanzee, the primate care team has to make sure the habitat and care of our chimpanzee group considers each animal’s unique needs. Since our youngest chimpanzee right now is 18, it’s been quite a while since we have had an infant chimpanzee in the group. With lots of upgrades and changes since then, the primate care team is taking a close look at the habitat to make sure it meets the needs of an infant and growing chimpanzee. Adult chimps are very agile, great climbers, very strong and intelligent. However, an infant has different needs as it grows and learns so we need to make sure the habitat is not only safe but also that it provides learning and exploration opportunities that are suitable for juvenile chimpanzee. We are not just modifying things for the upcoming baby, though. We also have to take into consideration the needs of the older chimpanzees in the group, two of which are close to 50 years old! These older ladies aren’t as spry as they used to be, so we recently upgraded their indoor dayroom habitat to allow for easier climbing, and added resting areas at the different levels. This was an awesome project funded by a generous anonymous donor! While older chimps are still much better climbers than most of us humans could ever be, as they age they may not be able to move around quite as smoothly. Here is Moon and Mususu again, wild chimpanzees, having a little group feeding experience in a fig tree. This behavior is referenced in my previous post as wadging and its basically the process of turning fruits into pulp; sucking the juice out and then discarding the dry remains of the fruit in a ‘wadge’. Moon is the 3 year old son to Mususu and he’s taking advantage of his mother’s strong chewing muscles. All apes, except humans, have a tall ridge on the top of their skull called a sagittal crest. This ridge of bone provides an attachment point for tendons which allow powerful jaw muscles greater leverage in chewing fibrous plant matter. It had always been a dream of mine to visit Bwindi, the name alone evoked such a sense of adventure and the unknown for me and so to have the chance to set foot in the national park was an experience I’ll never forget and one that was deeply moving for me, being able to see mountain gorillas in the wild was just so special what an absolute privilege it is to share the world with such an array of beautiful life, I never feel more enlivened and enriched than when surrounded by nature, what a place this world is!! . . This blackback is around 10 years old and his hair will gradually turn to silver over the next few years, it’s likely depending on the group structure that he will not mate until he’s 15-20 years coupled with a gestation period of 8.5 months, an approximate 4 year birth interval and you have really slow population growth. Rosa and Betty sitting comfortably high in a fig tree in western Uganda. Rosa was an interesting female because she never left her natal community of wild chimpanzees. In order to maintain genetic diversity, the females will leave their family at puberty and go find another community of chimps where theyll live out the rest of their lives. ⁣ ⁣ I find it so fascinating that in such a social and bonded species like chimps that after 16 years the females will never see their family every again. Hoy es el día del Gorila y les queremos acercar esta realidad. Hubo un tiempo, no hace mucho, en que las comunidades de los alrededores del Parque Nacional Impenetrable de Bwindi y del Parque Nacional del Gorila de Mgahinga en Uganda eran los peores enemigos de los gorilas de montaña. Cuando los gorilas cruzaban sus jardines, los habitantes que vivían cerca de estas densas y verdes selvas tropicales hacían sonar una alarma para enfrentarse a los animales, que eran vistos como una amenaza. Esto casi con certeza dio lugar a la muerte de los amenazados gorilas de montaña. Veinticinco años más tarde, estos grandes simios - de los cuales los lomos plateados, los machos de la especie, pueden crecer hasta seis pies de altura y pesar hasta 500 libras - todavía vagan por los jardines locales. Pero ahora, si hay alarmas, solo sirven para alertar a los guardabosques. 🦍Today, there are estimated to be merely 170,000-300,000 chimpanzees left in Africa, and their population is decreasing rapidly. One recent census in the Ivory Coast revealed that the chimp population there had decreased 90% in just the past twenty years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦍The primary threats to chimpanzees are habitat destruction, hunting, and disease. The increasing human population is encroaching ever deeper into even protected areas of chimpanzee habitats, and large scale logging is now a major threat to the forest primates of Africa. Subsistence hunting of chimpanzees as a source of meat is nothing new, but there is now a thriving but unsustainable commercial market for bushmeat (the meat of wild animals), including chimpanzees. PORTRAIT DE GORILLE 🦍 Ayo est un jeune mâle gorille bientôt âgé de 8 ans. Il est né et a grandit aux Pays-Bas, au Gaia Zoo plus précisément. Il est arrivé à Thoiry il y a quelques mois à peine, le 17 juin 2020. Pour décrire Ayo, ses soigneurs utilisent les mots : fier, sage et patient. C’est un bon élève pour les entrainements médicaux*, alors qu’il n’en avait jamais connu auparavant. Meet Kanyoni! He is the lead silverback gorilla of the Mubare Gorilla Family living in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda. As the silverback of the group he makes the decisions for his family and protects them from other threats. He is a caring leader with a lot of personality! Conservation Through Public Health, a GRASP partner and NGO based in Uganda, works closely with local communities and the Uganda Wildlife Authority to protect Kanyoni, his family and all the other gorillas in Bwindi.
