Chimpanzees live in the tropical forests of Central Africa, where they occupy a large variety of habitats: from tropical rain forests to the savannah and mountains up to 2750 m above sea level.The chimpanzee is 63-92 cm long and, in an upright position, it is 100-170 cm tall. In the wild, males weigh 34-70 kg, while females are slightly smaller, 26-50 kg. Chimpanzees are the most human-like apes! These monkeys are endowed with a strong intelligence, which they manifest by handling tools and recognizing a friend even after years of being away. In addition, they are extremely sociable. Pure love! ❤ What does this image say to you? This photo was shot at Senkwekwe orphanage in DRCs Virunga national park - the only one of its kind in the world. The work that André Bauma (pictured) and his colleagues do in this, Africas oldest park, is some of the most important and (sadly) least publicised conservation work on this planet. Some of the gorillas are victims of poaching, others were orphaned when their mothers were deliberately murdered. Compartimos el #comunicado emitido por nuestros compañeros del @zoo_aquarium_madrid en relación al #accidente ocurrido esta mañana en su instalación de #gorilas. Deseamos de todo corazón la pronta recuperación de la cuidadora. “Los hechos se han producido esta mañana, en torno a las 10 h., cuando una cuidadora con 19 años de experiencia en el Zoo, accedió a las instalaciones interiores para la rutina habitual de desayunos, limpieza y preparación de las instalaciones. Al entrar en una zona acotada con triple puerta, la cuidadora se encontró con Malabo, un gorila macho de 29 años, que había accedido a la misma. Los motivos por los que el animal pudo acceder a la zona se están investigando internamente, no obstante, la investigación judicial determinará exactamente los detalles. Subrayar que esta zona interior es de manejo, sin salida a zona de público y en este sentido, el protocolo de emergencia se activó rápidamente avisando al Samur y a la Policía municipal. El equipo del Zoo consiguió apartar al animal y posteriormente, el equipo veterinario anestesió con un dardo tranquilizante al ejemplar que fue trasladado a su dormitorio interior y en estos momentos, se encuentra tranquilo. Señalar que Malabo ha sido criado por sus cuidadores desde que nació con un comportamiento protector con el grupo y cercano a sus cuidadores. En estos momentos, la cuidadora se encuentra con pronóstico reservado y lo primero es desear su pronta recuperación. Our Audubon family is still processing this loss, but each kind comment and gesture means the world to us. Many of you have asked how Tumani is doing. Tumani is doing well. She is eating regularly, napping, and foraging with the rest of the troop. She is also participating in daily training sessions with her caregivers. Animal care staff are still monitoring Tumani and the troop regularly for behavioral changes. Their well-being is our number one priority. It had always been a dream of mine to visit Bwindi, the name alone evoked such a sense of adventure and the unknown for me and so to have the chance to set foot in the national park was an experience I’ll never forget and one that was deeply moving for me, being able to see mountain gorillas in the wild was just so special what an absolute privilege it is to share the world with such an array of beautiful life, I never feel more enlivened and enriched than when surrounded by nature, what a place this world is!! . . This blackback is around 10 years old and his hair will gradually turn to silver over the next few years, it’s likely depending on the group structure that he will not mate until he’s 15-20 years coupled with a gestation period of 8.5 months, an approximate 4 year birth interval and you have really slow population growth. The work that André Bauma (pictured) and his colleagues do in this, Africas oldest park, is some of the most important and (sadly) least publicised conservation work on this planet. Some of the gorillas are victims of poaching, others were orphaned when their mothers were deliberately murdered by rebel forces. Either way the goal is to return them to the wild where rangers protect 60% of the worlds remaining mountain gorillas - just 600 animals - living in Virunga. Despite its environmental riches the political instability in DRC understandably deters many would-be tourists, ironically depriving the park of the very income it needs to survive. GORILLAFAMILIE De gorillafamilie in Diergaarde Blijdorp is uitgebreid met een nieuw gorillajong. Tamani is de moeder en dit is haar zesde jong. Het pasgeboren jong is een mannetje en hij heet Thabo. In Afrika betekent dit ‘vreugde’. De vader van alle jongen is de bekende Bokito. Zijn familieclan bestaat nu uit drie vrouwen, vijf dochters, twee zonen en een aangenomen zoon. Bokito houdt zich niet bezig met de opvoeding van de jongen. Met zijn indrukwekkende verschijning zorgt hij voor rust in de groep en een veilig klimaat voor alle familieleden. Tamani is een zorgzame moeder. Ze heeft zich met volle overgave op haar moederrol gestort. Ze laat de kleine goed drinken en wiegt hem af en toe in slaap. Tamani heeft ook een dochter van twee jaar, Tonka. Die moet nog wel wennen aan haar nieuwe broertje, die alle aandacht van haar moeder opeist. Gelukkig krijgt ze veel steun van haar grote zus Thirza. In het wild worden gorilla’s ernstig bedreigd, vooral door vernietiging van hun natuurlijk leefgebied: het tropisch regenwoud. Mijnbouw is bijvoorbeeld een groot probleem met een verwoestend effect op het biotoop en de aantallen (oostelijke) gorilla’s. Het gaat hierbij vooral om het winnen van de metaalerts coltan, een onmisbaar onderdeel in mobiele telefoons en laptops. Blijdorp wil de gorilla’s helpen. Iedereen kan ook meehelpen en zijn oude mobieltje bij de Diergaarde inleveren. Vervolgens wordt die gerecycled. Zo hoeft er minder mijnbouw te worden gepleegd en kun je meehelpen aan de bescherming van het leefgebied van de gorilla’s. Je oude mobiel is dan ook een mooi kraam-cadeau bij een bezoek aan de Diergaarde. Je kunt deze inleveren in de verzamelbak bij het gorilla-buitenverblijf. 🦍Today, there are estimated to be merely 170,000-300,000 chimpanzees left in Africa, and their population is decreasing rapidly. One recent census in the Ivory Coast revealed that the chimp population there had decreased 90% in just the past twenty years. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🦍The primary threats to chimpanzees are habitat destruction, hunting, and disease. The increasing human population is encroaching ever deeper into even protected areas of chimpanzee habitats, and large scale logging is now a major threat to the forest primates of Africa. Subsistence hunting of chimpanzees as a source of meat is nothing new, but there is now a thriving but unsustainable commercial market for bushmeat (the meat of wild animals), including chimpanzees. At the Saint Louis Zoo we are dedicated to caring for animals, and that includes providing high quality care throughout their lifetime. For chimpanzees and other apes, this can be quite a long time, and individual animals have different requirements throughout their lives. With a multi-generational group and preparing for the birth of an infant chimpanzee, the primate care team has to make sure the habitat and care of our chimpanzee group considers each animal’s unique needs. Since our youngest chimpanzee right now is 18, it’s been quite a while since we have had an infant chimpanzee in the group. With lots of upgrades and changes since then, the primate care team is taking a close look at the habitat to make sure it meets the needs of an infant and growing chimpanzee. Adult chimps are very agile, great climbers, very strong and intelligent. However, an infant has different needs as it grows and learns so we need to make sure the habitat is not only safe but also that it provides learning and exploration opportunities that are suitable for juvenile chimpanzee. We are not just modifying things for the upcoming baby, though. We also have to take into consideration the needs of the older chimpanzees in the group, two of which are close to 50 years old! These older ladies aren’t as spry as they used to be, so we recently upgraded their indoor dayroom habitat to allow for easier climbing, and added resting areas at the different levels. This was an awesome project funded by a generous anonymous donor! While older chimps are still much better climbers than most of us humans could ever be, as they age they may not be able to move around quite as smoothly. Here she looks out from her overnight cage just after a hearty meal of fresh fruits and vegetables. A baby orang-utan would normally spend 7-8years under the close care of its mother and then not seek independence until around 14-15 years of age and so little Hujan has many years of care and rehabilitation to go before she can once again roam free in Sabah’s rainforests and the reflections of cages in her eyes and memories fade. 🇬🇧 Today we want to remind you the story of Leon, the gorilla who lived in Loro Parque for 8 years and who then left for South America to form his own family. In addition, we take the opportunity to highlight the work of modern zoos and animal embassies like Loro Parque in protecting biodiversity and watching over the welfare of the animals with such attention. León and his brother Aladín arrived from Israel to be part of the group of single male gorillas. Since Loro Parque is a reserve for the European project of conservation of endangered species, which guarantees and coordinates the survival of the species, Leon was selected after 8 years in the Park as the ideal male for his genetic, physical and psychological characteristics, to join two females and start his own family in the Belo Horizonte Zoo in Brazil. Thus, at present, Leon lives with Imbi and Lou Lou, with whom he has already had three offspring in total. Here is Moon and Mususu again, wild chimpanzees, having a little group feeding experience in a fig tree. This behavior is referenced in my previous post as wadging and its basically the process of turning fruits into pulp; sucking the juice out and then discarding the dry remains of the fruit in a ‘wadge’. Moon is the 3 year old son to Mususu and he’s taking advantage of his mother’s strong chewing muscles. All apes, except humans, have a tall ridge on the top of their skull called a sagittal crest. This ridge of bone provides an attachment point for tendons which allow powerful jaw muscles greater leverage in chewing fibrous plant matter. Hubo un tiempo, no hace mucho, en que las comunidades de los alrededores del Parque Nacional Impenetrable de Bwindi y del Parque Nacional del Gorila de Mgahinga en Uganda eran los peores enemigos de los gorilas de montaña. Cuando los gorilas cruzaban sus jardines, los habitantes que vivían cerca de estas densas y verdes selvas tropicales hacían sonar una alarma para enfrentarse a los animales, que eran vistos como una amenaza. Esto casi con certeza dio lugar a la muerte de los amenazados gorilas de montaña. Veinticinco años más tarde, estos grandes simios - de los cuales los lomos plateados, los machos de la especie, pueden crecer hasta seis pies de altura y pesar hasta 500 libras - todavía vagan por los jardines locales. This low production rate makes these animals particularly vulnerable to population decline thus every gorilla death is a cause for concern and can invoke a tremendous sense of loss and grief amongst gorilla family members. Gestation time for gorillas is similar to humans at around 8.5 months. Newborn gorilla babies weigh between 4lb-5lbs at birth and are fully weaned from their mothers no later than 4 yrs. of age. Just in time for World Gorilla Day, a Bwindi baby boom: Five mountain gorillas were recently born over the course of just a few weeks in Ugandas Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The births come as welcome news for a gorilla population stricken by troubles and tragedy in recent months. . As the COVID-19 pandemic caused ecotourism activities to be suspended earlier this year, rangers and other park staff were forced to cut back on their activities due to budgetary constraints. Then, in June, the park lost one of its best known residents, the silverback Rafiki, to poaching. But as @faunafloraint explains, the string of new births point to a brighter future for Bwindis mountain gorillas. . The arrival of this latest quintet is music to the ears of everyone involved in their conservation, FFI says in a statement, which you can read at the link in our bio.
