#alloyiusmcilwaineart 🎨 - This one hits really hard. I first painted this piece when the groundbreaking movie the @blackpanther, first came out. When the movie first debuted, many people didn’t understand what the big deal was. Here’s my perspective on the matter: When I was young, my mom had a really hard time finding toys and stories for me that featured Black heroes. There were a few...but they were definitely not in abundance, and they were sometimes hard to track down. Fast forward to 2018, and the Black Panther movie comes out...featuring the first superhero of African descent to debut in mainstream American comics (he debuted in Fantastic Four #52 in 1966). The Black Panther has had many comic book series over the years...even some highly acclaimed ones...but the movie is really what brought the character into an international spotlight. After the movie hit, you see books and toys everywhere featuring Black heroes . You see an influx of people in the African American community proudly showcasing their heritage & culture. You even had people from other cultures who were inspired to showcase their traditions because of the movie. But this is what touched me the most: I saw so many young white children wearing Black Panther T-shirts. I passed 1 kid on the street, & the kid gave me the “Wakanda Forever” crossed arm gesture. So I smiled & returned the gesture. I got a bit emotional, because the kid saw me, and he didn’t see some hyper-aggressive thug caricature. He saw someone who could be a king and a hero...and that gave me such hope for a brighter future. That was the power of that movie...and that was just one of the amazing characters that @chadwickboseman brought to life with his amazing talent. Few artists have made an impact like Roy Ayers. Hes written some of the most important soul, jazz and funk music of all time, and continues to influence musicians from across the musical spectrum. To call Roy Ayers a crossover artist is technically accurate, but at some point it’s worth asking where he wound up crossing to, and where the line he crossed even stood in the first place. A prodigious jazz talent raised in a musical Los Angeles household, he was literally handed a set of vibraphone mallets by great master of the instrument Lionel Hampton at age five. By his early twenties Ayers went from his recorded debut as a sideman to the headliner of his own album within a year. Today, one of my heroes passed away. Little Richard has been such a major influence in my life and on my style of playing, it’s hard to quantify in just a few sentences. In so many words, Little Richard was Rock & Roll. He wrestled between the sinful and the sanctified, a passion for life and the power of the evangelical. You can hear the realness of the struggle with every whoop, hollar, scream, or soulful run in his vocals. You could hear him channel his pent up frustration, the manic joy, the sexual longing, and ecstatic zest for life with ever note pounded out on the piano. Little Richard was a trailblazer for all Rock & Rollers. His no holds barred attitude to performance and his publicly flamboyant lifestyle served as the groundwork for every generation of rocker to take the stage after him.
