I cut my head open pretty good during the first trip of the year down in mainland Mexico. A bit of backwash came up the face of the wave as I was riding on my backside and my knee slammed into my forehead. Fortunately, I was with a great crew who quickly got me to the ER. I was cleaned up and sutured together in no time. And they charged me NOTHING. I want to stay in exchange for the incredible help the staff, nurses and doctors gave me. Something I’ve wanted to see for as long as I can remember is the wedge at night with a huge swell and bioluminescence. Finally got the opportunity last night. It wasn’t the brightest but still made for a great show! It was 1 month ago that me and @markgirardeau @patrickc_la and @dingosaidso had the beach all to ourselves getting the first shots of the phenomenon and since then thousands have been able to see this rare event! When @deepwatersurf storms into your living room (already in his wetsuit) looking for a fresh brewed coffee at 5:20 am you know it’s time to hustle and move towards the ocean. A few days earlier he planned this mission to reconnect with Waimea and hopefully catch some bombs. So out the door we scurried, piping hot coffee in hand and big boards in the back of the truck. We were on our way to meet Dusty and hopefully the rest of the boys for an early surf. As the roadway started to bend around the bay Kohl whipped it into the shoulder and we peered out into the darkness. Not 30 seconds went by before we saw what appeared to be a bomb break from the peak all the way towards the middle of the bay. All we could see was the whitewater in the dark, but it was big. We continued to the parking lot and found Dusty returning from his beach check with a smile on his face. “It’s big out there” he said in serious yet giddy manner. We suited up and headed down the beach towards the corner, just two other adventurous souls ahead of us in the predawn hour. Needless to say, the paddle out was exciting. It’s hard to keep the mind calm when you are getting ready, gearing up, and walking down the beach. But once in the the water everything washes away and focus is heightened. This photo is a capture of my most memorable ride that morning. I’m glad I made the wave because it was the first wave of a four wave set. Thanks for the photo @zoard and thanks for rallying me @deepwatersurf and @chilioil. Good times. We’ve been quietly working away this summer and balancing a turbulent ocean! 😊A CHECK IN for all you lovely sea dwells on where we’re headed! ❤️ Two project launches will be happening in the next 2 weeks, and I’ve been trying to reflect on why I started this passion project. I wrote this in 2017 & it’s been on the Sea Together website since: “I created this project with many goals in mind—I wanted less of the butt shots and more surf culture about highlighting the diversity and creativity of women’s surf culture. …to learn more about the inspiring women surfers around the world in ways that I had not seen in mainstream surf media or even in a print magazine, and also to highlight and uncover voices not normally heard in mainstream surf media. …to create access to stories and voices through not only on social media and in print, but also in person. …to gather the waters of the sea together in support of each other, empowering each other, and encouraging that the differences that make us different can still come together, as the ocean is a place of uniting. I believe that the tides are changing and that there is a new generation of women surfers rising up to defy the previous standards set before them and to challenge hierarchical power structures within the media to collaborate with each other through positivity and creativity. I believe that all humans one day will be equal and will have equal representation in surf culture everywhere, and that it will be normal to see diversity represented. But, it will take us to get there. Hey all , we’ve been laying low over the last couple of months seeing which way this crazy situation goes. First off: we want to say a huge thanks to all you guys for hanging in there with us! It’s been a strange couple of months in Indo with beach closures, surfing bans and movement restrictions. Thankfully, for now at least, it seems Bali and many other regions have been spared the health crisis they were predicting and we’re hoping that this will mean that the government relaxes some measures at the end of the month. We’re hanging to get back out to the islands, but we’re still waiting for the official word from the government and local regencies as to when this will be possible. One thing’s for sure: as soon as we get the green light we’re taking JIWA and anyone who can travel to anchor ourselves off a perfect set up - theres some much needed water time to catch up on! Wherever you are we hope you’re doing ok, feel free to ping us email with any questions and we’ll be sure to post any updates here too. 6 MONTHS! I hadn’t shot surfing for half of this screwed up year. What an awesome day to get back out there. A nice 8 foot long period swell from the SW. The boys were putting on a show, everyone knew one another, and we were all smiles! Great to see you @liquidbarrel and thx for letting me bump shoulders with you out there. And THE MOST thankful I could ever be to @kai_hall2007 who swam into the trenches to save my camera near dark after MY leash snapped 🙌🏻🙌🏻 you’re not old enough for bintangs yet so an unlimited supply of coca-cola may be the call!
