This is the first time that we had a decent yield from our two hazels. In the past, I could only find a few small nuts and many empty ones. This year I collected 1.6 kg of hazelnuts (including the shells), so there should be around 1 kg of kernels.⁠ ⁠ To ensure a better yield, I cut a few of the weaker branches to leave each hazel with 8-12 stronger ones. Throughout the spring and the summer, I kept removing thin long hazel shoots that keep growing at the center of the bush. This ensures less energy being spent on the young leaves and more energy going into fruits.⁠ ⁠ At the heart of the experiment was urine. I collected my own pee and poured it approximately twice a week around each of the hazel bushes. A szél jajgatva dúdolt a kéményben: – Nincs legelő, nincs tej, és nincsenek kis csizmák: mert nincs erdő, mert nincs erdő. Az emberek számolni kezdtek. Egy év, két év ... igaz, azóta van a sok baj, mióta nincs erdő, s most már nem mondták, hogy okos dolog volt az erdőt kivágni; csak néztek a sötétségbe, és hallgatták, mond-e még valamit a szél, de a szél már nem mondott semmit. Kilendült a kopár domboldalakra, és megült a vén hagyásfák koronájában. – Én már elhintettem a magot, hintsétek ti is... És amikor a nap felkelt, csillogó kapákon csúsztak el első sugarai, egy locsogó szarka csicseregve vitte meg a hírt az erdei népnek. – Cserr! – kiáltotta. – Halljátok? Ültetik az erdőt. A bagoly álmosan hunyorgott az idegen erdő odvában. – Beszélj értelmesen! Ki ülteti és hol? – Az ember, az ember; amit kivágott. – Majd megnézem magam is, te összevissza cserregsz minden ostobaságot. Amikor leszállt az est, a bagoly elimbolyodott a vén tölgyhöz. – Igaz? – Igaz. Most várom a szelet, hogy mirólunk is lerázza a makkot. Nem tudom, hol csavarog. – Itt vagyok, itt vagyok – zendült meg a szél, – Nem akartam üres kézzel jönni. A régi barátságot meg kell ünnepelni... ma, felhőcskék... – szólt bátran – csak szép lassan... A régi avar halkan kopogni kezdett, mert eleredt az eső; a szél megrázta a fákat, hullott a makk, suhogtak a megmaradt fák, itta a hegyoldal a vizet, életre ébredtek a csírák, és a völgyben csattogva énekelt a patak. ...
