Saturday, September 19th, while Willie was still away for training and I was gone at work, we suffered a tragic house fire. The firefighters were able to respond in time to stop the fire from spreading past the kitchen into the other rooms, but the amount of intensive smoke & heat damage to the home was unbelievable. Thankfully the structure of our home has remained in tact, however the interior along with all of our hard work and hundreds of hours remodeling the house is all gone. As of right now, the fire is still under investigation as to the cause/start of it. They are thinking that some sort of malfunction or faulty something happened within the stove. We will be displaced from our home for approx. 6 months while the house gets gutted, repaired, and rebuilt. My sweet baby Yonah passed away in the home before the firefighters got there, but she was somehow able to save and help River so that she made it out without any harm. She has always been our protector and she made sure she did just that for Riv. We are super grateful to have had Yonah in our lives for the past 6 years, she taught us so much, and brought so much joy to our lives. I am so thankful for my family and friends that were here to support me through this loss, and as I underwent the start of this process without Willie here or knowing about what had happened. We would appreciate all the prayers we could get right now, as we navigate our way through this trying time. I will be away from my computer, emails, and IG for a little so please be patient with me as I will respond to inquiries as soon as I can. - @taylordawnphoto on Instagram

This time last week, the sun broke through the clouds long enough to shine some serious recognition and joy on the recent graduates of our English program. Representing 19+ different countries from all around the world, these English Language Learners have dedicated themselves to learning English. Just as we started a new term of classes with these students this spring, Covid-19 hit, and we were forced to move all of our classes online. For some of our students, this was the first time using a computer, much less using a video conferencing platform like Zoom! They amaze us. They inspire us. Their persistence and drive make us better as teachers, as a business, as humans, as a community. Join us in congratulating these amazing students! PUBLIC NOTICE: The Higgins Avenue Bridge construction will be starting in one week, on Monday, Oct. 5. In the first phase, Sletten Construction crews will replace the existing bridge deck to widen the travel surface. Crews will begin construction on the west side of the bridge, nearest to the Wilma building. While construction is underway, travelers will be able to use one lane in each direction on the east side of the bridge which currently carries the northbound lanes. This first phase of construction is anticipated to last through May 2021. Once the west half of the bridge has been completed next spring, traffic will be swapped to the newly completed segment of the bridge while crews construct the northbound lanes. This second phase will run from May 2021 through December 2021. This process will look very similar to what crews recently completed on the Russell Street Bridge. Throughout the duration of this project, various roadway and sidewalk improvements will be made at each end of the bridge. Along the west side of the bridge, new foundations will be installed to allow for a wider bridge deck, in addition to new shared-use paths, and a new stairway to Caras Park. The goal is to have all lanes of the bridge complete by the end of 2021 and to complete final paving, painting, striping, etc. in the spring of 2022. #downtownmissoula #missoula - @missouladowntown on Instagram

Tampas Clara Frye Hospital, 1928, closed and was torn down in the mid-60s. It was the only hospital that African Americans could go! Tampa General would reject Black People. It was devoted exclusively to African-Americans until others had to admit them, the result of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was located east of North Boulevard, south of the Holtsinger Bridge over the Hillsborough River. Thats downtown Tampa in the distant background. L’Ile d’Aix, un petit bout de terre pour une grande histoire... Loin du tumulte citadin, l’Ile d’Aix, petit croissant de terre classé sur la liste des sites remarquables, est une île exceptionnelle où l’on oubli le temps, et pourtant le temps passé, à laisser son empreinte gravée sur elle. Fragile et isolée, Napoléon 1er ordonne en 1806 de mettre l’île en état de défense. Quelques années plus tard, s’invitant à constater lui-même les travaux de fortification, il y fît construire, entres autres, la maison du gouverneur (l’actuel Musée Napoléon). C’est ainsi qu’en 1815, au lendemain de la bataille de Waterloo, Napoléon 1er décida de passer ses 3 derniers jours en terre de France à l’Ile d’Aix, dans la maison du gouverneur, avant de se rendre aux autorités anglaises puis d’être exilé à Sainte Hélène. Presque 1 siècle plus tard, l’arrière-arrière petit fils de l’aide de camp de Napoléon, le baron Gourgaud, féru d’histoires impériales, et sa compagne américaine la baronne Eva Gebhard, ont accostés sur ce petit joyau de l’océan atlantique, puis vite s’en sont épris et constatant nombres de bâtiments en ruine, ont ainsi créé l’Association Des Amis De l’Ile d’Aix. C’est de cette union que L’Hotel Napoleon fut créée. 🇮🇹 E dopo aver attraversato in auto 13 stati americani (per un totale di più di 8000 chilometri) in tre settimane, ieri sono arrivata a casa, a Las Vegas! It’s #FargoHistoryFriday! #FargoHistoryPost: Silver Tray Cafe Abraham Solow opened the Silver Tray Cafe at its first location, 14th 8th St. around 1933. Fast forward 2 years to 1935 and the Silver Tray moved to 604 Front Street which is the current home to @babbscoffeehouse! The Silver Tray moved a third time to NP between 1939 and 1940. The final move happened in 1947 to 408 Broadway along with a name change to the Silver Tray Tavern around 1954. Louis Hoffman purchased the cafe from Solow and closed in 1976. #HondurasConHechos Presidente Hernández hace Visita Sorpresa a proyecto de construcción del Corredor de Oriente En su Visita Sorpresa número 102, el presidente Juan Orlando Hernández realiza este lunes un recorrido por el tramo carretero que conecta a Danlí (El Paraíso) y Tegucigalpa. La inversión de esta importante obra de infraestructura vial es de 17 millones de dólares y a la fecha ha generado 533 empleos en esta región. La obra inició en agosto de 2019 y luego, como parte de la apertura económica en medio de la pandemia de coronavirus, se reactivó en julio de 2020; se espera que culmine en enero de 2021. Esta vía fue construida en 1976 y después de 44 años se construye una carretera de primer nivel, de concreto hidráulico, igual que la de Occidente y la Carretera del Sur (CA-6). Esta es una carretera hacia una zona productiva de Honduras, productora de café, maíz, frijoles, tabaco, sector ganadero, y también conecta con la hidroeléctrica de Patuca y el puesto fronterizo de Las Manos, con Nicaragua. Es una obra prometida por muchos gobiernos y esperada por más de cuatro décadas, pero ahora la Administración del presidente Hernández sí la está ejecutando. El Corredor de Oriente se suma a todo el sistema logístico que heredará la Administración Hernández, y en este caso beneficia al departamento de El Paraíso, que es uno de los más productivos de Honduras. The intersection of George Street and Brock Street looked very different 150 years ago. The building on the southwest corner was once an early example of the Second Empire style in Peterborough. It was owned by George A. Cox, who was a prominent businessman and politician. By the 1950s, the upper floors were removed, and the facade changed considerably. Constructed in 1898, this Memphis theater was originally named the Jefferson — even though it was located on Madison. Two years later, the name was changed to the Lyric, and it remained a popular vaudeville house until 1924, when it was used for YMCA meetings, dramatic clubs, and town hall gatherings. In its later years, it served as a movie theater, but it was never as popular as the more opulent movie palaces on Main Street. In 1941, the building burned in one of this city’s most spectacular blazes. Salvage crews tried to remove two statues of Greek maidens that adorned the entrance, but their chains slipped, and the sculptures crashed to the ground. Still, portions of the old theater have survived. One woman bought 60,000 of the fire-scorched bricks for a home she was building on South Parkway. A home-owner in East Memphis bought thousands of other bricks and used them to build a handsome wall around his home at Highland and Watauga, still standing today. Here’s a tasty #ThrowbackThursday: Abilene’s beloved Candies by Vletas was founded by two Greek brothers, George and Nick, who brought their confectionary talents to Abilene sweet tooths in 1910. The shop and café were located at the corner of N. 1st and Pine streets, a plum location when the Bankhead Highway was constructed and the first road trippers rolled into the city. These days the candy makers have found another sweet spot, a restored railroad building across from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, not too far from that original shop. The Vletas brothers passed down their family secrets through generations, and the candy is renowned as a Texas treat. Their famous pralines graced the inaugural dinner of President George W. For #MuseumMonday we share a photo from opening day of Seaforth School in 1922, courtesy of the City of Burnaby Archives. The one room school served 20 students. In 1983, the historic building was moved from its original location at 7881 Government Road to the Burnaby Village Museum and in April 1987 the school was opened to the public as part of the Museum’s permanent exhibition. Although what happened overnight set in motion the events of the following day, the greatest losses started in the early morning hours of June 1st. The gun battle that lasted throughout the night kept immediate threats to black Tulsa at bay but by daybreak the tables started to turn in the most disastrous way. Many Greenwood citizens either fled for safety or were defending their property until being outnumbered by the oncoming mob. Some escaped unharmed while others who peacefully surrendered were still shot. Police and National Guard began taking the remaining blacks into protective custody but in the process left Greenwood vulnerable to all out attack. As the white mob marched into Greenwood from all sides, their mission seemed clear: after looting the properties, they were to be set on fire. This was repeated until 40 blocks of Tulsa was reduced to rubble and ash. *These photographs were taken on June 1, 1921. I will be sharing more of these in an exhibit called “21 for ‘21” opening January 1, 2021 at @bws.gallery . The exhibition will showcase 21 composite images from the 1921 #tulsaracemassacre. Residents are having their say about outdoor dining with more than 2,600 signatures already collected on a change.org petition to close Main Street Mornington to traffic from October 30th to November 22nd in line with the state governments COVID-19 roadmap. Mornington resident Alexis Collier who started the petition said closing the popular thoroughfare from Barkly Street roundabout down to the Esplanade every Friday lunchtime to Sunday afternoon would greatly assist the regeneration of Mornington’s retail and hospitality businesses. This closure would be instrumental to kick start the re-opening of the Main Street traders which have all been hard hit by the COVID-19 closures. The road closure would enable venues to increase the number of patrons whilst abiding with COVID-19 distance requirements. Ms Collier said. Ms Collier, who is hoping to gain 5,000 signatures on the petition said banning traffic would mean traders could limit themselves to the Main Street area the same width as their frontage and extend to the middle of the road for service. Pictured in this post: 1) This 1896 image faces north on Avenue D. The large two-story building with five windows above housed Willis Myers’ Lobby Pool and Billiard Parlor on its first floor. The second floor was the location of the incorporation meeting that brought the City of Miami into existence. 2) The grounds of Ft. Dallas, Julia Tuttle’s homestead, shortly before Flagler’s first visit. This image looks east towards the mouth of the Miami River and bay. The Brickells’ trading post is visible top right, across the river. 3) Makeshift huts in the woods near Tuttles property that were hastily constructed by 95ers who rushed into Miami after it was announced that a new Flagler town would be built at Miami. 4) This 1895 image depicts an “early view of 1st Street.” This may be either today’s S. 1st Street, in downtown, or N. 1st Street, two blocks farther north, or it may be the original “1st Street,” today known as N. 11th Street - the northern extremity of the planned city. 5) A family outside their home in 1896. 6) Early street scene on North Miami Avenue in 1896. 7) A view looking north on Avenue D, todays Miami Avenue, in 1896. 8) Group of people gathered on East Flagler Street at 1st Avenue in 1896.
