One of our distinguished #WSSUAlumni celebrated a major milestone birthday earlier this month. Gloria Banks shared with us that her big brother, Dr. Edward O. Diggs celebrated his 100th birthday on June 6, 2020. Notably, he was the first African American person admitted to the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He currently lives in Silver Spring, MD. Happy belated birthday, Dr. Diggs Here is a picture of Edward O. Diggs and family, c. 1951. Diggs, an alumnus of Winston-Salem Teachers College, was the first African American admitted to the University of North Carolina Medical School. From left to right are the Diggs children: Beverly Elise; Sharon Patrice; Edward O., II; Dr. Diggs wife Hazel G.; and Edward O. Diggs. - @wssu.alumni on Instagram

Today we celebrate National Loving Day - a day to remember the landmark 1967 Supreme Court Decision of Loving vs. Virginia striking down laws banning interracial marriage in the United States. The perfectly named Mildred and Richard Loving were arrested, convicted and sentenced to prison, just for being a multiracial couple living together as husband and wife. With the help of the ACLU, they appealed their convictions all the way to the US Supreme Court, winning their appeal and paving the way for multiracial couples to marry legally in all 50 states. 53 years later we are still fighting for racial equality and justice. People in Atlanta and all over the world have taken to the streets to raise awareness and demand change. We will continue to support people and organizations like the ACLU and others working to bring equal economic opportunity, equality in healthcare and education, fairness in policing and criminal justice and protection of voting rights for all people of color. Legendary Events stands with our black and brown family in fighting to make these ideals a reality - NOW. We will also continue to do as we have done for 23 years - help ALL couples celebrate love. And we take today to celebrate one very special couple - Mildred and Richard Loving. Happy Loving Day!!! - @tony_conway_legendary_events on Instagram

For our first Film Club of the autumn, we will return to classical Japanese Cinema to discuss When a Woman Ascends the Stairs directed by Mikio Naruse in 1960. A film which offers a subtle, devastating study of the life of a woman in postwar Japan played by film star Hideko Takamine. Wednesday 7 October 6.30pm Head to our website to book your place (link in bio) Japan Society Film Club takes place on the first Wednesday of the month. We will recommend a film to watch in advance and meet online to discuss. Films are often available online for free, on DVD or on BFI player which this year is celebrating Japan 2020, a special season on Japanese cinema. When possible, we will invite film experts to introduce and lead the discussion, but the event is open to all and we encourage participants to freely express their opinions and feelings about the films. - @japan.society.london on Instagram
