For our next big exhibition #BeethovenMoves we will welcome this and other precious etchings from the collection of @albertinamuseum 🙌 This is one of Goya’s “Caprichos” ✨ Like Beethoven also Goya suffered from deafness. While the exact nature of the serious illness that befell Goya in 1792 has still not been clarified, we know that it left him completely deaf. Around 1797 Goya began working on the eighty prints to which he later gave the title ‘Los Caprichos’. He advertised them in the newspaper Diario de Madrid on 6 February 1799 as ‘a collection of prints of capricious subjects’. Together with his growing scepticism, the sharpened vision resulting from the loss of his hearing enabled Goya to create a cycle that is one of the absolute masterpieces of socially critical art. Monstrosities of the subconscious (a term not yet coined in Goya’s day), illicit love-affairs and duels, the perversions and idleness of the clergy, the Inquisition, the stupidity of physicians (and painters), vignettes of infernal ugliness populated by ghosts, witches and goblins: all these and more Goya etched into the metallic medium – and into our minds. ✨ And there is a lot more that Goya has in common with Beethoven. Hoe door een avondje zuipen de invasie van Nederland werd uitgesteld🍻 ———— Adolf Hitler was van plan om al in januari 1940 Nederland, België en Frankrijk binnen te vallen. Het plan droeg de codenaam Fall Gelb. De Duitse leider stuurde majoor Hellmuth Reinberger (📷1) vanuit Berlijn richting het gebied rond de Rijn om zijn geheime plannen af te leveren. Vanwege de belangrijkheid van de geheimhouding mocht Reinberger absoluut niet per vliegtuig reizen van Hitler. ———— Bij een tussenstop in Duitsland kwam de Duitse majoor een goede vriend en collega Erich Höhmann (📷2) tegen. Ze begonnen met drinken en beleefden een prachtige avond. Höhmann was piloot en had voorgesteld om de volgende ochtend vroeg toch maar het vliegtuig te pakken, zodat Reinberger wat verloren tijd zou terugwinnen. Op 10 januari 1940 steeg er in de vroege ochtend een Duitse Messerschmidt Bf108 op vanaf Münster met Höhmann en Reinberger als enige inzittenden. ———— Het vliegtuig kwam in een mistbank terecht en dwaalde volledig af. Wegens een tekort aan brandstof moest het een noodlanding maken (📷3). De Duitse officieren overleefden de klap, maar waren op Belgisch grondgebied terecht gekomen, vlakbij Maasmechelen. Het eerste wat ze wilden doen toen ze het toestel uitklommen was het verbranden van de geheime documenten. Belgische soldaten hadden de crash echter zien gebeuren en waren snel ter plaatse. Nog voordat de Duitse geheimen vernietigd konden worden werden Reinberger en Höhmann gevangen genomen. ———— De Belgen stelden onder andere de Nederlandse regering op de hoogte van de documenten. Er werd echter getwijfeld of dit geen afleidingsmanoeuvre zou zijn. De troepen werden wel in staat van paraatheid gebracht. Adolf Hitler was witheet en Höhmann probeerde diezelfde dag nog zelfmoord te plegen uit angst en schaamte. Carew Rice was born in 1898 in Barnwell, South Carolina. Rice began cutting his silhouettes in the early 1930s towards the end of the Charleston Renaissance, a time of cultural preservation and artistic renewal and growth in the city of Charleston, South Carolina. His grandson, Clay Rice, continues the family practice and has become an internationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning silhouette artist and childrens book author. Artizanul Unirii principatelor române, Alexandru Ioan Cuza a fost de două ori în Dobrogea, în timpul domniei sale de cinci ani, într-o perioadă în care tărâmul dintre Dunăre şi Mare se afla încă sub dominaţie otomană. În 1860 şi 1864, Cuza a vizitat mai multe localităţi dobrogene, înainte şi după întoarcerea de la Constantinopole, acolo unde mergea pentru a se întâlni cu sultanii otomani Abdul Medjid I, respectiv Abdul Aziz. Cele mai multe informaţii le avem însă din cea de a doua sa călătorie, din mai 1864, când se îndrepta spre Istanbul. Cu această ocazie a vizitat Medgidia, Cernavodă, Murfatlar şi Constanţa De fiecare dată, cu acordul administraţiei otomane, în aceste localităţi, Cuza a participat la ceremonii oficiale, întâlnindu-se cu oficialităţi şi mai ales cu numeroşi români dobrogeni veniţi să îl salute pe artizanul Unirii principatelor. La Cernavodă el se afla pe vasul Sofia, unde s-a întâlnit cu generalul de brigadă Sali Paşa, cel care a rămas cu el ca ataşat pe toată perioada călătoriei în Turcia. După ce a petrecut noaptea la Cernavodă, Cuza a plecat a doua zi cu un tren special la Kiustenge (Constanţa), unde a ajuns la ora 12.00 şi unde nu a stat decât câteva ore, fiind aşteptat de vasul care urma să îl ducă la Istanbul. #visitdobrogea #doborgea #constanta sursa Poveștile Mării Negre - @visitdobrogea on Instagram

Su via Appia Pignatelli, prima di raggiungere l’incrocio con via dell’Almone, un piccolo vicolo si apre sulla sinistra e conduce ai maestosi scenari della campagna romana della #Caffarella. Si tratta di vicolo Sant’Urbano, che dopo poche decine di metri lascia intravedere il profilo di un monumentale edificio sacro: la chiesa di S. Urbano alla Caffarella, che era in origine un tempio romano, consacrato a Cerere e Faustina. Thus Spoke Zarathustra For roughly a year now, Wes Cecil and I have been working on a new illustrated translation of Nietzsches book - Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Wes Cecil is a philosophy professor and lecturer at Peninsula College. You can find many of his lectures in his channel. Honored to be working with Wes, one of my favorite thinkers in such a daring and meaningful project, on such an important book. The project consists of 4 books that include: commentaries from Wes Cecil @humanearts and up to 90 illustrations one for each chapter. However these illustrations are not to be interpreted in a descriptive sense. Los matarifes hacían su trabajo, mientras los bebedores de sangre esperaban en fila ordenadamente. «Ha terminado la matanza —continúa diciendo el reportaje que muestra varias estremecedoras fotografías—. No queda una res en pie. Unas sobre otras aún cocean en el suelo resbaladizo y ensangrentado. Los bebedores que presenciaron los sacrificios esperan el momento de recoger la sangre humeante. Todos entregan a los mozos los vasos que al efecto llevan». El procedimiento es metódico y es relatado por un periodista que, sin ocultar su asombro, narra lo que está presenciando: «En aquellos rojos manantiales los vasos van llenándose repetidas veces de sangre humeante. Los bebedores aproximan el vaso a sus labios y sin reparo, dominados sin duda por la fuerza de la sugestión, injieren el contenido. Art and I, have had a long standing relationship since I was a 5year old, sketching a potted plant in front of me, at a home long gone. Art, then became a home which I carry daily. Here is a work I made for EXQUIZINE by Pulp Society and Irregular Art Fair -a blind-prompt-based collaborative game played with strangers. I received a prompt from Sid Jaishankar, and I drew one in response: titled Banana-Skin Butcheries, 8x8inches, pen&ink on paper. Its a fictionalization of an advertisement that occurred in Harpers Weekly-A Journal of Civilization (American political magazine, active 1857-1916). The original cartoon was published on May 29,1880, depicting a two-panel cause and effect of dropping banana peels resulting in injuries due to slipping on them. In my pen and ink work, if you look closely, the banana peel has hate, bias, fear written in each of them. Because, literally, we consume it, we litter it everywhere, and thats the root of what butchers us today. _____ I think that art has power. And when overlayered with more context, it becomes timeless. Unfortunately, the context of hate, fear and bias butchering us, has proven to be timeless. 1. Jacqueline with Crossed Hands, 1954 . The year 1954 was a depressing one for Picasso. Several of his long-time friends, including the writers Maurice Raynal and Paul Eluord, and the painter Henri Matisse had recently died. His relationship with Francoise had fallen apart. The departure of Francoise and the children left Picasso alone, but a new woman, Jacqueline Roque, soon emerged on the scene. Now in his seventies, Picasso began what was to be his last major relationship. . In 1954 Jacgueline moved in with Picasso and the couple married seven years later. In 1955 Picasso and Jacqueline acquired a new home called La Californie, situated on a hill in Cannes overlooking the Golfe Juan. Here Picasso embarked on a feverish period of painting. Jacqueline was to become one of the major subjects of this period, and he painted his new partner over and over again. Here we see Jacqueline in profile, seated with her knees tucked up to her chest. Happy Labor Day! Mechanics Hall in Portland is a landmark of Maine workers. The Italianate building was built 1857-59 by and for members of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. It was designed by Portland architect Thomas Sparrow, also a member. The MCMA was founded in 1815 as a social organization for master crafts people, entrepreneurs, and apprentices in the “mechanical arts”. When we first arrived at my in-laws home (after our three month woodland adventure in North Carolina) I felt a little stuck. I dont drive and public transport isnt great where we are. I usually get around using trains, buses and my bike. Here I relied on my husband having to drive me around, which is a little annoying for everyone involved. Then I discovered my mother-in-laws bike, which although on the small side is perfectly rideable. And although I hardly see cyclists on the roads here, I discovered that the roads are perfectly cyclable too! So now this is what I do most mornings and it is making my days all the more happier. * One of my favorite places to cycle to is the town of North Tonawanda. It has a rich industrial history, including the @carrouselmuseum which I visited yesterday. I cant say how much I enjoyed it (and there will certainly have to be some carrousel- themed work happening here soon). To honour this history, one of the towns main streets, Oliver Street, is also decorated with many old carrousel horses which hover above your head.
