This year, one of my resolutions was/is to be a louder and more involved voice in the musicians wellness world. I had lots of plans but, well, we all know what happened to 2020. I am excited to share that I am now on the PAMA Young Professionals Committee. PAMA (Performing Arts Medicine Association) was an incredible resource when I wrote my dissertation. They have decades of research regarding injuries and health for performing artists (including musicians, dancers, and actors). Last summer, I attended the conference at UCLA and met incredible leaders in the field, attended fantastic workshops, and bonded with some like-minded musicians. It was also where I met @tinamargaretanilssen, the creator of Timani, which has changed my life (more on this later). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ive been surprised when speaking with my performer friends to hear that most of them dont know about PAMA and what a great resource it is. Well folks, thats why I joined the committee. The performers, those on stage, need to know how to access the research in the field - and that starts with simply knowing about this organization. I know a creepy amount - lets call it research - so if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out. YOGA POST No. 3 (kind of): When I first bought the book #LightonYoga by BKS Iyengar (many years ago), I was really surprised to see that Yehudi Menuhin wrote the foreword. In fact, when I point this out to musicians and yogis alike, they are equally surprised that a classical musician - a violinist no less - was one of the biggest advocates for this now popular physical practice. I couldnt shake it. Just the fact that Menuhin had written the foreword to a book that is still used in yoga teacher trainings today sent me spiraling down a research path that resulted in my dissertation Using Iyengar Yoga to Enhance Violin Playing. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I watched videos of Menuhin playing before and after discovering yoga, I read everything he and those around him said about his life, teaching style and philosophy, interests, diet....literally everything. Besides his family and friends, I (not trying to brag - just confessing to major fangirldom) probably know more about his life and career than almost anyone else. Ive tracked down family homes in CA and watched BBC documentaries about him and his guru that are not available to the public. He was a true Indigo Child and so much more than JUST a violinist. If you ask, Im happy to bore you with facts, dates, and details of his life. HOW TO SAVE $$$ ON PHOTOGRAPHY STUFF⠀ I hate purchasing backdrops and props, especially because even if I use it just often enough to where it doesn’t get repetitive, I still won’t be using it nearly enough to justify the costs⠀ ⠀ However, I found a photographer friend of mine (@jaybrans) that is often willing to go halfsies on items, in this case a linen hand painted canvas that was beautiful and barely used⠀ It was big enough to do a full body shoot with a model and it looked absolutely gorgeous!⠀ AND GET THIS it was $50 for me and my friend to purchase this backdrop⠀ ⠀ Find deals, and split those deals with your friend by sharing gear - but only buy gear/backdrop/prop if they’re on sale.
