A favourite keepsake in my drawer for the last 20 years is a recording of Warlpiri voices made by friends and colleagues from the Tanami, where I was lucky to live and work for a time. Warlpiri is one of central Australia’s strongest indigenous groups and languages, still spoken as a first language and not going away anytime soon. The messages of farewell and recollection of particular moments elicit a range of emotions - It was a profound experience on many fronts.The recording came with a word-for-word translation that to read is joyful and funny, saddening and maddening. It also makes me wonder about oral traditions, the importance of repetition and cadence, and the centrality of storytelling to humanity. Recently my family recorded a ‘Podcard’ with @podcard_stories for an ill cousin. 20 friends and family spoke for a few minutes to record a story or impression of @reneemichellem, cleverly edited and produced as a gift by @abcradionational producer Anna Frey Taylor. It was striking how consistent and strong a character Renee is for everyone. It’s a listen that makes you laugh and cry, and one Renee has found repeatedly comforting. (Thanks Anna) In the mill I listen to podcasts, otherwise the dial is rusted to RN. The radio is informative but also good company when there’s none to be had in the wee hours. RN has been a bit ‘corona-cast’ of late, so I’ve been more into the @orvisflyfishing podcast with @rosenbauert. (And the odd sea shanty) Even if you’re not a fisher, the pace of the show, the sound of Tom’s voice and the engaging yet benign topic are worth a listen. A friend once told me she thought that people in despair were best comforted by stories. Her idea was that the more stories you hear, the more you realise you’re not alone in your experiences and thoughts. We are connected in more ways than first apparent. Perhaps this is another of the main reasons we read or listen to the radio - to experience the conversations we don’t always get in regular life. I’ve also heard the human voice, particularly when detached from the meaning of words like in chorale music, is soothing and a balm for those seeking calm. ERROR 404 A finales del año 2017 después de haber sacado nuestro segundo álbum Reconocer, durante un ensayo en la mítica Quinta del Barrio, (donde surgiera el grupo Proyecto Caos en los early 2000) nos encontramos un disquete del MPC 2000xl, con beats, samples y chops que nos resultaron increíbles, el disquete estaba nombrado como 404. quienes nos siguen sabrán que nuestros discos siempre tienen un numero capicúa, por lo cual resulto evidente para nosotros que debíamos hace un disco con el material que DJRC tenia en ese disquete. Ya que este numero es el que acompaña un clásico error de sistemas operativos, tomamos el camino de cambiar nuestra forma de componer siempre tan extraña, y sin medidas por un modelo mas organizado y balanceado en cuanto a la composición de los versos, estribillos y por ende de las canciones, algo que no solíamos hacer, de eso sale este disco que busco el orden, el balance, la medida en cuanto a lo lírico y lo musical, esto siempre orientado como no podía ser de otra forma por DJRC. Las semillas se sembraron así, ordenadas y prolijas, y aunque solo eran seis, tardaron en brotar, pero brotaron, crecieron y estamos muy contentos de poder convidarlos con los frutos que obtuvimos gracias al amoroso cuidado que tuvimos. - @actsamigo on Instagram

Thank you @carriejohnsart for this. Thank you for all the 21st birthday STWHA wishes yesterday. To say that record changed my life would be an understatement. That record is the reason I am able to make a living as a musician to this day. I am humbled by the thought that something we created when we were essentially children (in the grand scheme of things) has made such an impact. When people come up to me at shows, or used to anyway, and show me their robot tattoos I feel a great sense of pride. That record means something to me that it probably doesn’t to you but that’s the cool thing about music. What you take away from it may not be what the creator thought, but it’s just as meaningful. Sometimes, usually when someone says that record helped them through a death in the family, I don’t know how to respond. I’ve taken to saying “I’m glad we could help in some way”. If you’re one of those people, I hope you know that’s true. So, raise a glass to the little record that could turning old enough to drink. And, always remember, because I never forget, that I passed on Tom Waits tickets to record the vocals for “Holiday” and every time we play that song, it’s all I can think about. Here’s the @ztapes Summer 2020 tape (which has been out for a bit and was on my story a few weeks ago but I’ve been too busy to properly photograph it until now shhh). In my initial sketches I was working with the idea of a crab, in my sketchbook is a drawing labelled “IDEA 1” that is almost identical to this except it’s a crab with claws in the air and the composition is a bit more symmetrical. The excitement of seeing my own work in physical form comes with diminishing returns sometimes. Seeing my illustration in a magazine with the words “illustration by Seb Westcott” is still a nice feeling but it will never be the same as the first time when I was so excited that I wanted to show everyone I knew and take photos to send to grandma of me holding the magazine next to my face. These tapes always feel special though, they’re something I hold dear and hopefully some other people in the world love and cherish them as part of their tape collectibancampon too. They’re my favourite thing. Link in bio!! ~ A few years ago, George Fierro III built instruments for Danny Elfman while moonlighting as the creator of fatalist-absurdo web series Skeleton Pals (look it up). Around that time for his own fun, hed experiment with guitar, tape, and the reverberations of his room. What if Alvin Lucier was sitting in a room with his guitar? (And ok, cut the experiment off after one iteration of playback.) Thats side one of SUN ROOMS. Side two is George putting himself in a trance improvising on guitar and synthesizer - edited into two separate zones simultaneously restless and tranquil (not unlike the skeleton pals, in a way). ~ SUN ROOMS is the sound of George free from any expectation other than his own. No boss, no bandmates, no intention of anyone else hearing these intimate, lonely (yet hopeful??) atmospheres. Song structure is hinted at, batted around, focused in on and then abandoned. George is interested here in the cosmic glue that binds it all, that thing thats as hard to grab as a dust mote dancing through a sunbeam. Nothing to do but watch it fall.
