@hyattregencykolkata launched its first post lockdown “World Cuisine Brunch~Super Large Sunday Feast” and we were delighted to be invited to sample the scrumptious delights on offer. Five years ago this week, @jopiazzaauthor and I set out on the cross country road trip that would eventually comprise the last third of the book. This photo was taken outside DeSmet, SD on the Laura Ingalls homestead (related: I keep thinking I should do a ‘reckoning with Laura Ingalls’ podcast; she is the original white woman on the road, and devoted as I remain, she remains problematic AF in ways deserving of further unpacking). I’ve been thinking a lot these past months about how much of what I value about my life has been the freedom of movement. And what it means to now be living in a world where this is no longer possible, and may not be for a long time. I’m also thinking a lot about why I was, and still am — I biked all around NYC during the protests with little issue — able to move so freely. And, as always, why representation and narrative matter so much. This week also marks the fifth anniversary of Sandra Bland’s death on the road. The narrative attached to her trip, and the movement of Black people in this country, has never been one of freedom or openness. (Related: I just rewatched Queen & Slim the other day and was floored anew.) I talk about all these things, and more, on the @eifpodcast this week. It was a really great conversation, and also just great to be in conversation! I miss conversation. I’ve been slacking. Not on my fitness routine but on my nutrition studies and posts. I thought that with more time at home I’d focus on posting more informative or inspiring content , but it’s been the opposite. . I think I’m just pooped out of media right now and it’s portrayal of the seemingly crazy world we live in at the moment. It’s been all consuming. I’m tired of the rhetoric of all of it. . Not to mention videos calls with work all week. I’m guess I’m screen exhausted too. . But in the midst of the “chaos” I’ve been enjoying slowing down at home. My happiness comes from the simple. My exercise routine. My bubble. Nice dinners on my new deck. I don’t miss much of how it was “before” to be honest. Okay I do miss Marshall’s being fully stocked lol. . New Yorks COVID infection rate has been below 1% for over a month!! CUE THE OUTDOOR DANCE PARTY🎉 Once in a faraway universe called March 2020 NYC, we were in the epicenter of a deadly virus, the scariest chapter of our lives. We didnt know how #covid19 spread, why the case rates were growing exponentially, or how to save loved ones from sickness or worse. Even Ian had COVID, we couldnt avoid it! But once New Yorkers learned what to do to stop the spread, we did it. We wore masks. We social distanced. We stopped gathering indoors. We tested regularly (ICYMI tips linked in bio). We listened to science and cared for the collective good, not just our own inconveniences. And look! Life is okay! Better everyday! #WHYIMSTAYING. ♥️ So if you, like me, are currently feeling burnt out this year, I get it. The Cotswold Way is a 100 (ish) mile signposted trail in the UK from Chipping Campden to Bath Abbey. I grew up less than 2 miles from part of the path, and yet have never walked more than the shortest bits of it. Yesterday morning I set out to right that wrong. Starting from Cheltenham I took a bus up to the start of the trail in Chipping Campden. It took the best part of 2 hours to wind its way through every village possible but, for the princely sun of just £4.20 it must be one the country’s most reasonably priced public transport services. Add in the fact I was the only passenger for the majority of the journey and it was like having a large over sized taxi just to myself. A small stone pillar and modest plaque mark the starting point (or end point if you’ve walked the route in reverse.) From there an unbroken series of signposts carefully guide you along the route. So frequent and reliable are they that I didn’t once have to check the map for the whole day. Whoever planned the route obviously has a thing for walking up hills as day one is full of them. Given a choice between staying high up on a ridge line or following a valley floor and the path ignores both options. Instead it merely goes up and down and up again with an alarming frequency. In between the gorgeous green countryside are wonderful picture postcard villages. Each with their perfect manicured lawns, Cotswold stone buildings and palpable feeling that you’ve stepped back in time 100 years. It seems Cotswold villages fall into two distinct camps. The first are the villages that have become tourist havens; full of tea rooms, souvenir shops and day tripping families. The rest are the complete opposite; stripped of any former facilities (banks, pubs, post office, even phone boxes) are all gone and now just private dwellings remain. Having started later than normal due to the bus ride, my expectations for the days mileage were tempered but, a final total of 16.5 miles seemed like a more than respectable effort. Once a pirate always a pirate. Arg. 🏴‍☠️⁣ ⁣ Actually, the Joseph Conrad started as a training ship in Denmark in 1882. It later became a private yacht and went back to being a training ship in the US. Serving as a merchant ship during WW1. Just boat loads of history on this beaut. 😜⁣ ⁣ I spent 3 summers (I’m guessing ages 12, 13, 14) attending overnight camp on the Conrad. I have so many fond memories from those magical summer weeks. I made friends, I learned to sail, climbed the rigging, and when the weather was right and the counselors trusted us we were allowed to sleep on deck! One summer there was this scandalous occurrence where we found out the counselors were getting drunk at night. They were probably 16-18 years old and we idolized them as the little pee wee campers that we were. Can you blame them? That’s what teens do, especially when living on a permanently moored tall ship at a maritime museum for the summer! I wasn’t the best influence either— having grown up in Mystic, plus my dad worked at the Seaport for a period of my youth, my two camp gal pals and myself made a mischievous plan to leave Seaport grounds during our free period and walk downtown. Probably just for ice cream and to shop for silly trinkets.⁣ ⁣ Grateful for these formative years in such a unique place! Three years ago the Lake District was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; 250 years ago saw the birth of William Wordsworth, England’s greatest poet (and Poet Laureate 1843-50) who spent much of his life around Grasmere and Rydal. On October 1, National Poetry Day, the Poet Laureate Simon Armitage will give an ‘online only performance’ from newly restored Dove Cottage, the Grasmere home where Wordsworth wrote many of his best known works. Burch Reserve: Just north of highway 100 across from Edwin Warner, the Burch Reserve opened about two years ago. It’s much quieter than the rest of the Warner Parks and I’ll bet it will be gorgeous when the leaves start turning this fall. Monsal Dale- Peak District If you go to Peak District, Monsal Dale is a must see. Is the best example of calming Derbyshire countryside. You can walk along the river, admiring the beautiful labdscape or have a picnic on the field. There is also a stunning cycle route( or you can walk) approx 8 miles and is great for families. Como en casi toda Barcelona desde que está el covid puedes disfrutar de los sitios sin apenas gente, poder hacer fotos sin gente a tu alrededor es un lujo. 💡 Avete mai fatto caso ai fori profondi che scandiscono, in modo regolare, le mura di Ferrara? Non quelli dovuti all’incuria dell’uomo e del tempo (e, purtroppo, la nostra cinta muraria non brilla per salute, come si vede dalla foto), ma quei buchi quadrangolari che spesso diventano rifugio per i piccioni: ecco, quelle sono le buche pontaie. 🤓 Già, ma cosa sono? Si tratta dei fori utilizzati per alloggiare i ponteggi che sono serviti alla costruzione delle mura. Queste travi, dovendo reggere dei tavolati lignei sporgenti e sottoposti a forti carichi, erano spesso annegate nel muro per tutto il suo spessore. Quando il lavoro era terminato, i ponteggi venivano rimossi procedendo dall’alto verso il basso, facendo attenzione a mantenere le buche pontaie aperte, in modo che fosse possibile rimontare le incastellature per i successivi interventi di manutenzione. Le buche pontaie si trovano spesso nelle opere di edilizia medievale, sebbene esistano già in epoca romana. Con laffinamento delle tecniche di edilizia e le nuove esigenze di decoro dei prospetti esterni, si iniziò a colmare sempre più frequentemente le buche pontaie, che per lo più scomparvero - se facciamo un discorso generale - col Rinascimento.
