USA - Colorado. Gross Reservoir in Roosevelt National Forest (~40 min outside Boulder). Murray rates it 🐾🐾🐾🐾. Pros: This is a good hike to take visitors on that aren’t used to the high elevation because it’s not too tough of a hike (less than 1,000 ft of elevation gain), but you still have super pretty mountain and lake views throughout. Very easy to get to - no 4WD or high clearance required to reach the trailhead! The views on the way up are almost more worth it than the final stop at the reservoir itself, since you hike down into the basin, so make sure to stop and enjoy the higher views before you go down to the water! JMT Day 16 // Evolution Lake - LeConte Ranger Station There’s something very magical about the Evolution Basin. It is one of the best parts of the JMT, and maybe even the whole PCT. The simultaneously towering but friendly peaks, the lakes that blend seamlessly into one another, the meadow grasses that somehow stay green even in late August. And even though we had less than perfect weather: drizzly, cold, and windy circumstances, I wanted to sit here forever. Of course, life kicks in at this point and reminds me that no, we can’t stay here forever. We have to keep moving, because we are already behind schedule, and we don’t have unlimited time off, and I also don’t know how to survive in the wilderness once I run out of food. Darn reality. Mammoth Lakes, California 🇺🇸 On arriving into Mammoth Lakes, the power was out for the whole town due to a storm brewing which meant the first of several fails... #fail no 1: no power, meant no restaurants were open. 19, 22 (x2) 30, 35, 37 ⠀ It’s hard to even write this. I’m finding difficulty in formulating a sentence. These numbers are very significant to me, in a tragic way. These numbers represent dates. At these ages, I’ve lost a friend. It’s incredibly difficult to lose loved ones and family members, so much that the world stops and sometimes you feel lost. However, losing friends, who are your own age, is a different kind of pain and heartbreak. When you’re in your teens or even into your thirties, you feel like you’re not supposed to die. You’re too young. ⠀ Part of my anxiety is from having lost many family members in an extremely short amount of time. So much, that I’m constantly thinking about how I would even have the will to wake up in the morning, if I lost an immediate family member. To the point, I randomly break down in tears. It hurts me so much, that it’s something I never speak about. ⠀ We are only on this Earth for less than 100 years, so make every minute count. Don’t go another day, doing something that makes you miserable. Hank is fixed, vaccinated, house trained and crate trained 💛 This boy is a puppy through and through and has the puppy energy to show it! He’s searching for an active home who can keep up with his play time needs! He loves getting attention and will happily lay down for some belly rubs. ⁣ ⁣ Not much is known about Hanks past since he was a stray but he will need continued work on his dog to dog socialization in his forever home. July 24, 2020 Day 16 on the JMT. Glen and Kearsarge Passes. Glen was my friend 🙂 I struggled up more than one pass but, Glen was one of my favorites. The Pass itself was like a knifes edge and so cool! The climb was long but there was flatter terrain in between climbs which made it a little easier to handle. At high elevations the trail would turn from dirt to rock. Sometimes baseball sized (ankle breakers) sometimes smaller gravel sized. We knocked out the two passes with the thought of a full day off the next day in Independence. Happy Sunday Everyone🐾💛 - Finally starting to see Tarka loose some of her phantom pregnancy weight, thank goodness 😅 For those that didn’t know or new followers, Tarka had two phantom pregnancies. It was horrible to see her go through that. We never even thought about breeding at all! However, it’s been a whirl wind since the phantom pregnancies and after getting her spay in June (She turned 2 in April) its been near impossible to try and get some weight off her🤦🏻‍♀️ Baring in mind we go on lots of walks and she has plenty of exercise and she is raw fed, it’s still been quite hard to loose some of this weight! It’s said to be the best river trip in the world, which is a very American thing to say. Have you ever experienced something that was so cool, so beautiful that you just wanted to keep going? You never wanted it to end? But that exact same thing was so challenging and straining that you couldn’t stop envisioning the moment you reached your truck? This trip was one of those life experiences that made me feel suspended in juxtaposition. ⁣ ⁣ And how would I describe it when people asked ‘how was the trip?’ Is that not always the worst part?! But then again, I think, maybe that’s the BEST part. Maybe the fact that I’m unable to put a succinct, yet complete summation of my experiences into words is what keeps it sacred. ⁣ ⁣ What I can tell you is that Coyote Gulch in Utah is stunning. Around one corner there’s something beautiful and exciting, around the next is a mile of slogging, and then you reach a challenging problem that makes you question your backpacking skills. ⁣ ⁣ The thing that makes it most worth it for me, is being able to experience it with others. I’m so thankful for the two women who went all in with me, trusting me to get us where we needed to go for 7 full days. ⁣ ⁣ I’m thankful for seeing the whole of what each of us was truly capable of while learning, too, what would become a list of limits. For instance, when there’s only 1 way up, you find a way up. When there’s no going back, you just keep going. To experience their best you have to put in work both in planning, endurance, and lots of sweat. Most things in life worth something require something similar. With a world locally that feels like it’s turned upside down I feel privileged to slip away into the real world where the universe stares back at you with piercing indifference through an nearly infinite number of eyes scattered across a night’s sky and the polished granite as smooth as skin has already outlasted most of my species time on this planet. Plants ephemeral in their seasonality feel nearly infinite in their adaption to this challenging habitat. I’m scared.... no.... I’m terrified.... Not a single one of you knows what’s really going on in someone else’s life. So don’t you EVER judge them from what you see on social media. Im scared. I’m scared I’m gunna have to rehome my dogs. I’m scared i will have to work 60+ hours a week for a long long time just to live on my own. I’m scared I’m going to have to rehome my dogs. I’m scared to even talk about this with any of you. Because it breaks my heart. Dogs are my passion. They are what I really want to “do” but at this point no where near reality. Just be nice to people you see on the street cause you have no idea what they are struggling with! Right now I’m just trying to cope with the fact that I can go from having three dogs to none and it breaks my heart more than anything in the world. Just wanna edit that it’s not financial. I’m working 60+ hours a week now just to make sure I can provide for myself and them. But at this point all they do is sit around at home/ in crates 24/7 and that’s no life for my dogs. This is Tina. She’s almost three years old and she could be your soul mate. #adoptable I met her yesterday at the local SPCA. She became rowdy at the offer of a walk and was immediately removed from the building. Outside, Tina did some jumping and nipping. This is the kind of excitement that her adopters may want to channel into productivity (like #gitboots or #preparepicnic) before outings. We practiced stopping, sitting, and not biting each other on the way to the car. She seemed pretty happy on our drive, but 120km to a big waterfall warrants a mental health stop (off the highway at the river). This is where she showed me a special skill: her shoulder slip (probably patent-pending) for taking off harnesses. I distracted her with a snack back into the car before she could finish her whole performance (I’d seen enough to get the gist). I tightened her harness until her probably-patent-pending move no longer worked. After getting her dressed in two collars (makes it harder to slip off her head), a harness, a connector (harness to lower collar), and two leashes (one looped around my body and one in hand) we were safe and ridiculous enough looking to hit some trails. We started on an unpopulated trail just to see what kind of team we made. Prancing along behind Tina, I felt like I had my own wolf escort. We made an OK team so we went down the road to a busy spot with the big waterfall. There were humans and dogs here, but also the most threatening creature to our team’s safety: the chipmunk. We were somehow able to remain relatively composed in the presence of all this excitement. I never heard a bark and she watched other dogs with only a big tail wag. Sierra High Route Day 1! We wake up early on our second day. Today we’ll officially be on the Sierra High Route!!! But first, we have 4 miles to hike to Roads End, the start of the Sierra High Route. I start off pretty strong, mostly because it’s all downhill or flat, and the motivation to poop in a hole I didn’t dig myself is very strong. And also I get to throw away my trash! Every ounce counts! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At Roads End, I look sadly at all my things. @halfwayanywhere takes mercy on me and grabs some of my things, making me a whole two pounds lighter. Ahead of us is a 5,000 foot slog up the Copper Creek trail, and the day is only getting warmer. We set off, leap frogging with some older gentlemen for the first couple miles. (This is important.) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Halfway up the trail, I bonk super hard and we take a break. I fall asleep almost immediately on the trail. @halfwayanywhere gently shakes me awake and decides to take my bear can. There’s no arguing about this. I hand him my bear can in a fit of tears, frustrated that I am struggling so hard. We also swap cameras, since mine weighs twice as much and I’ve taken 0 photos today. He carries my bear can in his arms to the top of the Copper Creek trail, then off-trail to Grouse Lake, and then over Grouse Lake Pass to camp just beneath Goat Crest Saddle. We didn’t make it to our planned campsite at Glacier Lakes; I try not to get too down on myself. This walking thing is hard. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My highlights of the day? Not getting passed by the two older gentlemen on the trail. (I take my wins where I can get them.)
