Of course, the evening that I dont bring my Nikon with me I see the largest eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) Ive ever seen at Conservation Park. Estimated to be about 6 ft, I almost stepped on this gorgeous snake when I walked in the grass to avoid a mini lake in the trail and CLEARLY wasnt paying attention to this dude chilling in the grass, very well camouflaged🤦. Without crocodilian I would be lost, since birth they have fascinated me. Most people see them as just dumb reptiles maybe seeing one or two in a zoo, Tv or even seen a few at the surface and basking out in the sun. That is far from what they are after spending countless hours in there habitat they have taught me how to move how to fight how to approach situations gators can fight the toughest conditions weather it’s a massive injury or drought weather they need to disappear and hold there breath for 8 hours at a time or the fact that a female gator in distress once led me to her male underwater as a defense they just never stop amazing me with there intelligence people say that dinosaur are extinct but there not there are a few left open your eyes and protect them they are what keep nature in balance. Gator hunting has verry deeply rooted racist roots slave babies used to be used as gator bait in Lusitania in the early 1800s meaning there is still most likely second generation gators alive today when the practice was still utilized. It made me wait a few minutes til he/she crossed. “Might as well just take a picture of it”, I thought. I always say that good pictures aren’t taken from the sofa. You have to be willing to go out there and spend time in the wild “hunting” and waiting for the animal to do its thing. Yes, a lot of it is luck, and a lot of time you come back empty handed, but your chances go down to cero if you stay laying on the sofa instead. I often leave the house before the sun is out just to photograph the sunrise at the beach. Other days, like yesterday, I leave home in the afternoon by myself and go to the wild. Training with Aries the crocodile the other day. People that have only seen my gator work constantly ask “can you do that with a croc”, even though I post croc work often! Another common question is how gator/croc training compares, it’s literally the exact same principles and ideas, but the crocs are faster, more agile, and usually more interested in trying to eat you—BUT I can’t tell you how much I HATE how people obsess on these generalizations like crocs are more aggressive, etc. It totally depends on the species(over a dozen species of croc) and it hugely depends on the individual! I’ve had *some gators way worse than *some crocs, and vice versa. Generally crocs are faster and more predatory, and more dangerous to work with for a skilled handler. But then unskilled people who have no idea what they’re talking about look at gators as if they’re now lesser somehow, but I like to remind everyone, dead is dead, they’ll both kill you just the same, especially when you don’t know what you’re doing. It’s like you’re choosing to get shot in the head with a 9mm or 45acp. You’re still dead either way. Give both the respect they deserve. . . Of course I have to put the regular disclaimer here- yes this is dangerous and working with wild animals can get you seriously injured or killed, don’t try this at home kids. I’ve been working hands on with crocs over a decade, not the sort of thing for beginners! This croc is not tame, he does try to bite and will absolutely kill and eat me if I make a mistake. Where I would be now if not for Covid! I can’t wait for travel restrictions to end and for it to be safe to travel again, I miss Costa Rica so much!! Who would want to join me on my next trip down to see this guy?? This was last year, working on stationing and training with Paco the rescue American crocodile at the @greentiquewildliferefuge.cr @sicomonoresort Paco came from another facility and on one hand is very used to people, but on the other hand he is was I call eye shy, where he flinches and closes his eyes any time any movement is made towards his head area at all, even with the food. This is likely a result of someone in his past hitting him in the face with sticks repeatedly. Although they’re incredibly tough animals and any actual injury is highly unlikely, it’s not necessary to hit them at all to train them!! A lot of facilities do this unfortunately, it’s really common among many professionals, but my experience has taught me it is unnecessary and I have no problem training croc’s and gators without hitting them. I use a stick to block and touch the animal in specific spots and block attacks, but don’t need to hit them at all. Proper knowledge and experience go a long way and make a much better experience for the person and the animal! He has a safe home at @greentiquewildliferefuge.cr . American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) that sometimes end up in people’s backyards are referred to as “nuisance gators”. Last night Cyler and I went out to try and see if we could catch and kill a 7-8 foot gator to fill our first tag. On the way there we agreed that we both wanted to be home no later than 10:30. We had no idea that we were going to be in a hour long fight with this 12 foot dinosaur that weighed 619 lbs. We had to drag him across the lake because we couldn’t get him in the boat. On the west coast of Costa Rica in the Puntarenas province, you can stop on a crocodile bridge over the Tarcoles River. But beware! dont get blinded by the beautiful view, the Tárcoles river is.... FULL of crocodiles... I was driving with a friend and we stopped there as we were on our way to the Carara National Park. There were a few dozens of american crocodiles, which can get as long as 4 meters/13 feet ! so really... dont fall over that bridge... you wouldnt last long. Dont feel brave either, unless you are Crocodile Dundee claiming pura vida exploits, dont venture to walk to the side of the river to get a closer look at those reptiles. YACARÉ EN RAMALLO. Recientemente, Manuel Antunes coordinador de nuestro COA registró un hermoso ejemplar de yacaré (aún desconocemos si se trata del overo o el negro) en nuestra ciudad. Pese a la gran sorpresa de la mayoría de los vecinos, es necesario aclarar que el yacaré es una especie nativa de Ramallo. La caza y el deterioro de su hábitat por nuestra parte han hecho que desaparezca de la zona, desplazándose aguas al norte. La demonización de dicha especie durante tanto años, nos convenció que estos animales son agresivos y sumamente peligrosos, nada más alejado de la realidad. Es una especie tranquila, cuyos registros de ataques a humanos son sumamente raros, siendo la mayoría realizado como método defensivo ante las agresiones. En muchos lugares del país, los yacarés son un valioso recurso turístico, con el sólo hecho de querer apreciar a tan majestuosas criaturas. Por razones de cuidar al ejemplar, no daremos la ubicación del mismo, pero si nos parece adecuado compartir el registro para concientizar sobre su protección. Y le recordamos a la población que la caza y/o captura de estos animales es un delito penado por ley N° 22421 de Consevación de Fauna Silvestre. Im so very proud to get to announce were finally part of the Fujifilm family! Today @fujifilmx_us announced their new Creators program, which has such an amazing and diverse group of photographers. You can see us all in the link in my bio, and here: https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/home-creators/ If Ive gotten to hang out with you in the last nine years or so, you probably saw me with one Fujifilm camera or another. It started with the x100, and moved to the Xpro1, and from there Ive had so many different Fujifilm cameras I cant remember them all. But they were never our main cameras for weddings. We had Canon for 10 years, and then Nikon for another several years. We just didnt feel like any mirrorless camera could do what we needed them to do with how hard and how fast we shoot at a wedding. But when the Xpro3 came out last year, I finally was able to say goodbye to dSLRS for good. But @erinchrisman wasnt there yet, so we kept our Nikons. But with the new XT4, @erinchrisman found a camera that she loves. Ive never seen her take so many photos...at weddings, and just around the house of Roxy. That makes me so happy to see. If anyone has questions about Fujifilm cameras, or just cameras in general, please let me know in the comments below. 2020, no matter how weird or devastating it has been for all of us photographers, at least has given us a chance to rethink what really matters in our work and what we want to spend the rest of our lives photographing. Its going to get better, and were going to have a renewed enthusiasm to show what we care about with our photos. Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) ——————————————————— This juvenile was enjoying the warming rays of the afternoon sun on a small rock close to the river bank. If you look closely you can actually also see some dragonflies sitting just above. ——————————————————— In India, Mugger Crocodiles often occupy the same habitats as Gharials. So how is it possible that seemingly alike species can be found in the same area? Wouldn’t the competition for limited resources drive one of them to extinction? Theoretically yes, but Muggers and Gharials are able to successfully coexist because both species aren’t that much alike and use their environment differently, they partition their resources. This means that these two crocodilians divide out resources like food, space and resting sites to avoid competition which enables them to both live in the same habitat. While Gharials are highly specialised for catching fish, the solidly built Muggers just aren’t as agile and instead rely on other prey getting a little too close to their broad snouts. Muggers also choose elevated river banks with steeper slopes to bask whereas Gharials tend to use shallower banks and mid-river sandbars to soak up the sun. Furthermore, location and substrate of nesting sites differs greatly between the two species. Unfortunately, using different resources compared to Gharials does not prevent Mugger populations from faring similarly bad. Muggers have been classified as vulnerable since 1982 and continue to face many anthropogenic threats such as habitat alteration, poaching and detrimental fishing techniques.
