We’re ecstatic to welcome to our team a five month old Bald Eagle who we have named Wallace. Our naming theme for this year is naturalists so he’s been named after Alfred Russell Wallace, the British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator. We’ve teamed him up for training with Simon Christer from our Bird Team and we’ll keep you up to date with his progress - watch this space! In time, we hope that he’ll be a star of our displays alongside veteran superstar, Danebury. Wallace hatched at @cotswoldfalconry in March and they have kindly shared with us some amazing photos of him as a youngster. Millions of migratory birds are electrocuted annually on electric distribution lines in the U.S. Large birds, as was the case with Kisosen our Golden Eagle, are most at risk of touching two parts simultaneously as their wingspan and head-to-foot height is typically greater than the separation between energized components. It’s time for fall migration around the Great Lakes! Warblers, hawks, and monarch butterflies are passing through on their way back to warmer habitats. The distance many of them travel never ceases to amaze me! I remember seeing a warbler last year in Peru and wondering if she had ever passed through my backyard over 3,700 miles away. Isn’t nature incredible? It always comes back to connection for me. Despite spanning the greatest distances, we are all so connected! That warbler depends on healthy ecosystems in my backyard and in the lovely forests of Peru that so many wonderful people are working to protect. While I was exploring the area for migrating species I also came across some lovely shorebirds and a juvenile bald eagle that was busy screeching away to a nearby sibling. - @christylfrank on Instagram

It commands respect and is amply visible in the behaviour of other birds when this one is around. . . Generally sits on the top most portion of the perch, keeping other birds at the lower height. Is ferocious and short tempered when someone tries to take its place. . . One has been lucky to have seen all three stages of its growth, ie, Juvenile, Sub Adult and the Adult. All three have different characters and distinct body patterns. . The one in this image is a Sub Adult. The golden feathers are making way for the dark brownish ones. The distinctive Golden head is visible. Very soon, it will turn mostly dark brown less the head. On the wings it will have big, distinctive white spots. . Its a sheer joy to see this mighty one. . 🔎 Un ghjornu, un ritrattu : à la découverte de la biodiversité nustrale avec le CEN Corse ! 🧐 Connaissez-vous le Gypaète barbu ? Le Gypaète barbu 🦅(Gypaetus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758) ou « l’altore » en corse, est une espèce de rapace nécrophage 😊 charognard) qui vit dans les massifs montagneux 🏔. C’est l’une des 4 espèces de vautours présentes en France et le plus grand rapace de Corse ! Il doit son qualificatif “barbu” à la présence d’un masque de plumes noires entourant son œil 👁 (clair, cerclé de rouge) et descendant à la base du bec. En vol, il est facilement reconnaissable à son envergure (près de 3 m), au contraste de son plumage (ventre clair, dos, ailes et queue sombres) et à sa queue en forme de losange ♦️. En Corse, le plumage du Gypaète est de couleur claire ⚪️ alors que celui du continent est plutôt orange/rouille 🔶 (ce dernier se baigne dans des sources contenant de l’oxyde de fer, qui ne sont pas/peu présentes en Corse). L’espèce est protégée 🔒 au niveau national. Suivis depuis longtemps par le @parc_naturel_regional_de_corse (PNRC), ses effectifs ont chuté 〽️ en Corse ces dernières années, passant de 10 à 5 couples entre 2008 et 2014 (nb de jeunes à l’envol très faible). Un Plan National d’Actions (2010-2020) a été mis en place. Mené par le PNRC en Corse, il vise à rétablir ✅ cette population gravement menacée d’extinction. En 2014, un projet de renforcement de la population a été lancé (lâcher de 10 gypaètes juvéniles sur la période 2016-2020). Le CEN Corse est impliqué depuis de nombreuses années en concertation avec le PNRC dans des actions « Gypaètes » 🦅(participation aux comptages bénévoles et salariés). It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share that the one-and-only Gryphon the bald eagle passed away this weekend. Gryphon had started showing some signs of illness and had a vet trip last week. Tests revealed not good news. Between her age (most likely close to 30) and ailments, Lisa Kelly, Teatowns Animal Care Supervisor, made the decision to not do further biopsies and let Gryphon eat all the fish and live out her days in peace. Some words from Lisa are below: “In true wildlife form she did things her own way. Last night I could tell she was tired. I sat with her, had a long talk, and told her I would be back early. The next morning around 9am Gryphon passed away with me next to her, much to her annoyance I am sure. People always ask if the birds love us. I tell them they tolerate us. Gryphon tolerated me to a point... I was to bring her fish, rats, and the occasional squirrel, and leave her alone. On hot summer days I was permitted to make the hose a sprinkler for her to take a shower… from standing in the corner. When I first started at Teatown, Gryphon was in the process of attempting to be glove trained. She had other ideas, and that hope was abandoned. She was deemed an “exhibit only” bird when it was clear this girl was having none of it! We always do what is in the best interest of our ambassadors. Since 2003 she has headed the Raptor Loop -- delighting visitors with a chance to see a beautiful and powerful bird up close. She gave people a chance to have a new understanding of a wild animal that they could see in their own neighborhoods. Often, I would tell people to head to the river to see eagles, after they expressed how cool seeing Gryphon was. Kids would ‘WOW!!’ when their school groups walked up, adults became kids watching her and I know she left an impression on everyone. Gryphon will always have a place around the Raptor Loop and in my heart. I will always be grateful for all the lessons she has taught me. - @teatown_lake_reservation on Instagram

Estaba yo enviando un audio cuando de pronto escucho un golpe seco en el suelo, me vuelvo a mirar y veo algo que parecía una paloma ¡pero no era una paloma! le doy dos disparos sin mirar el seteo de la cámara, miro el visor y él emprende vuelo con una cria de tuca tuca u otro reodor en las garras! Y no sabía que puta hacer y al tratar de enfocar en vuelo, lo pierdo detrás de muralla de marañas. Logré una foto del milano chico (Gampsonyx swansonii) sobre el hoyo del tuca tuca (Ctenomys conoveri). Y creo que nunca más se me va a presentar la oportunidad de tomar una foto de esas dos especies en esa situación. Satu per satu mereka tidak lolos penilaian, hingga tinggal elang yang tersisa. Ia melanjutkan terbangnya ke tempat yang lebih tinggi dan lebih tinggi, hingga ia berada di ketinggian maksimal. Elang itu pun berkata, “Lihat, saya telah mencapai titik tertinggi, meninggalkan yang lain di belakang!” Pada saat itu burung pipit kecil, yang telah ada di punggungnya, melompat dari sayap dan terbang lebih tinggi, karena ia telah menambah kekuatannya. Dewan burung pun bertemu untuk menentukan pemenangnya. Mereka menyatakan, “Burung pipit mendapat hadiah karena pintar, tapi pengakuan atas pencapaian terbang yang paling tinggi tetap pada elang. Di samping itu, elang mendapatkan hadiah untuk daya tahan, karena ia mengalahkan semua pesaing lainnya dengan burung pipit di atas punggungnya.” Yang bisa dipetik: Burung Pipit hanyalah burung yang kecil dan tak mungkin bisa terbang tinggi melebihi burung yang lainnya. Namun Pipit tak pernah ingin menyerah,maka dia kombinasikan cara kerja keras,kerja cerdas dan kerja nyata. Dengan cara dia melompat lebih dulu diatas tubuh burung Elang ketika akan terbang tanpa diketahui si Elang. Zeearenden, Visarenden, Blauwe kiekendieven, een Roodpootvalk, een Smelleken en zeer, zeer grote aantallen Buizerds, Torenvalken en Bruine kiekendieven, maar de show werd gestolen door Grauwe kiekendieven van alle leeftijden. Indra Eksplotasia, Direktur Konservasi Keanekaragaman Hayati (KKH) Direktorat Jenderal Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam dan Ekosistem (KSDAE) melepas secara simbolis bersama PT Indonesia Power Kamojang POMU Unit PLTP Gunung Salak. . Raja, elang Ular Bido (Spirlonis cheela) berjenis kelamin jantan ini adalah serahan dari Balai Konservasi Sumder Daya Alam (KSDA) Jakarta. Setelah melewati masa rehabilitasi kurang lebih enam bulan lamanya di Pusat Suaka Satwa Elang Jawa (PSSEJ), spesies yang menurut IUCN berstatus least concern dan termasuk satwa yang dilindungi oleh pemerintah ini pun siap dikembalikan ke rumahnya di alam. Kesiapan ini dinilai setelah dilakukan pemantauan dari sisi medis dan pola perilakunya. . Gorowek yang terletak di Resort Gunung Butak, Seksi Pengelolaan Taman Nasional Wilayah II Bogor menjadi lokasi terpilih untuk melepas Raja. Beberapa waktu sebelumnya, tim TanaHalisa melakukan penilaian hábitat pada beberapa kriteria diantaranya kondisi hábitat, tutupan hutan, aksesibilitas dan ketersediaan pakan. . “Satu minggu yang lalu, saya berkesempatan mengunjungi PSSEJ untuk melihat kelahiran Elang Jawa di kendang rehabilitas, dan hari ini saya untuk kesekian kalinya mendapat kesempatan untuk melakukan pelepasliaran satwa jenis elang. Hal ini bentuk keseriusan kita semua untuk menjaga kelestarian satwa liar dan keseimbangan ekosistemnya,” ucap Indra. . “Kami berharap program seperti ini dapat terus dilaksanakan. Whats up there in the sky? 🦅 #Raptors are often difficult to identify as they circle above you, without giving a clear view of their face or other identifiable features. Size is always the first determinant, but some species are pretty much comparable. 🤔Honey buzzard and the common buzzard are two species that can be challenging to tell apart, especially if you encounter juveniles or some individuals with an interesting colour palette. One thing however you can rely on is the wing and tail patterns from below. 🎲The #honeybuzzard (2nd pic) has exactly three darker lines both on its tail and wing, two close together and the last one on the edge of the feathers separated from the two but a thick lighter stripe. What a beautiful Red-tailed Hawk. Wait, his tail isnt red! Thats because their tails dont turn red until they are a year old, so this is a juvenile with a barred pale tail. Several juvenile Red-tailed Hawks have been seen hunting on the mesa lately. You can spot one who likes to perch on the fence next to the trail in the mornings. Listen carefully and you might hear their screams as they hunt. Fun Fact: when you hear any raptor scream in a movie or show it is almost always a Red-tailed Hawk. 🔎 Un ghjornu, un ritrattu : à la découverte de la biodiversité nustrale avec le CEN Corse ! 🧐 Connaissez-vous l’Autour des Palombes ? L’Autour des palombes 🦅 (Accipiter gentilis arrigonii Kleinschmidt, 1903) ou encore “l’astore” en corse, est une sous-espèce endémique de la Corse et de la Sardaigne 📍, plus petite et de plumage plus sombre que la forme nominale. C’est un rapace diurne, de taille moyenne et d’aspect massif de couleur gris foncé sur le dos et blanc strié de gris sur le ventre. Ses ailes sont relativement courtes et arrondies, sa longue queue est barrée, et le sourcil est bien marqué de blanc. Ce rapace est souvent présent dans les chênaies 🌳 (verts et pubescents), les pinèdes 🌲 et les hêtraies 🌳, mais il affectionne les mosaïques d’habitats qui sont plus fréquents en Haute-Corse. Fin chasseur, son régime alimentaire est constitué presque exclusivement d’autres oiseaux 🕊🐦(geais des chênes, pigeon ramier, etc…). Il niche généralement entre 350 et 1400 m d’altitude. C’est une espèce protégée 🔒 au niveau national. En Corse, l’effectif de la population d’Autour des palombes était estimée entre 56 et 69 couples en 2010. La population sarde serait de 50 à 70 couples, soit un effectif total compris entre 100 et 150 couples. L’espèce a fait l’objet d’un plan de restauration de 2004 à 2008 qui n’a pas été reconduit. Sur la base des données issues du PNA 2004-2008, le CEN Corse participe à l’amélioration 👍 des connaissances sur cette espèce en réalisant des études de suivi et d’inventaires sur différents sites, avec le soutien de ses partenaires (DREAL Corse, OEC).
