Helemaal niks organiseren was geen optie, dus hebben we dit weekend onaangekondigd een dikke graffiti jam in de binnenring van De Berenkuil opgezet. Geheel corona-proof, maar met de zelfde creatieve drive. Er volgt de komende weken nog flink wat foto en video materiaal op onze socials, maar ga gerust ook zelf een kijkje nemen in de berenkuil! (repost!) LETS TALK ABOUT... Skatepark Etiquette! As roller skating continues to grow, we’ve seen a HUGE influx of baby skaters flocking to skateparks - yay! We want you to be safe AND well informed, so we’re here to teach you how to share the park safely so that roller skating can continue to grow and be embraced by the mainstream. 1) SAFETY FIRST: Not so much etiquette as a personal disclaimer - always wear your safety gear, especially when trying new things! 2) RESPECT THE SPACE: the skatepark is for EVERYONE - in a public place, every single person has the same right to the space as you. Yes, even the scooter kids 😉 3) ACCIDENTS HAPPEN: The skatepark is SKATE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Accidents happen to the best of us, and sometimes you may even run into someone else. Try not to assume malicious intent when it comes to collisions, and always be aware of your surroundings. 4) DON’T BE A SNAKE: Watch for someone’s board, scooter or skate on the coping as an indication they want to drop in. Be aware of any order or queue happening - try not to cut people! Call out “dropping!” when it’s your turn, to give a heads up to anyone who wasn’t paying attention like you were. :) 5) SHORT AND SWEET: Don’t hog the bowl when there are other people waiting their turn; keep your runs 45 seconds to a minute MAXIMUM, or else be prepared to deal with grumpy skaters. (PROTIP: If you want the skatepark to yourself, try early mornings or off times - like when kids are at school). 6) RESPECT YOUR FELLOW SKATERS: Don’t come up to an experienced skater and ask them to backflip or otherwise perform for you. If someone wants to show you their best tricks, they will - but there’s no obligation. However, never be afraid to ask a veteran skater for tips and help - that’s always welcome! That’s it! In a lot of the fitness market, there is extreme attention to thoracic extension and scapula retraction. Although these qualities are largely missing in a sedentary population, I think that when we are analyzing the demands of specific sports we need to make sure we aren’t overlooking flexion and protraction patterns. For throwers in baseball specifically these two qualities contribute to the braking mechanism in the throwing motion. Thus, having the ability to control the range of motion and be strong in them will allow increased velocity in pitches. With that being the case, it is my opinion that we need to teach the athlete how to do those things THEN put strength into those patterns. Most people in baseball have adopted some of this in the form of wall slides from Eric Cressey, but at some point a singular exercise is only going to elicit so much adaptation in these movement archetypes. As such, we need to ensure that we are actively creating variance in our movement work to ensure that the athlete is put in the best position to succeed. Looking to the top of the sport, at one of the games hardest throwers in Nathan Eovaldi, we see an extreme amount of thoracic flexion in the throwing motion. While this is probably on the outlier side in the amount of flexion (and knee extension) capacity, it really allows us to see that it is present in the pitch sequence. One problem is that if we don’t have access to slow motion videos or pictures of this exact moment, which often times get discarded because they aren’t “pretty,” we can miss this nuance of the movement entirely. So I am using a simple tall kneeling thoracic flexion w/ scapula protraction to train those movements in conjunction with each other, since that is what we see on the field. It’s a challenging and uncomfortable path that requires a lot of strength, vulnerability, humility, forgiveness and self-compassion. Besides the surf being as good as it could possibly get, one thing that made this session stand out more than maybe any other, was that they were performing a sound check on the judges tower that day. Please join the GWOT Memorial Foundation in honoring Sgt. Bryan Cooper Mount, 25, of St. George, Utah, who gave his life in defense of his fellow Americans. His service and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Sgt. Mount, an 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper, was killed on Tuesday during a vehicle rollover accident while conducting reconnaissance operations in Eastern Syria. Mount was assigned to 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Maj. Gen. Chrisopher Donahue, the 82nds commander, called Mount a true American hero. He was a husband, son, brother and leader who was adored by everyone who knew him. Our deepest sympathies are with Sgt. “Until your mission is an obsession, nothing will change.”~Robin Sharma • I kept telling myself that I needed to change. I kept looking into the mirror completely dissatisfied with the reflection. It wasn’t just the image that I was dissatisfied with, it was the fact that I knew that I was capable of so much more. I even went as far as judging people that were refusing to change; deep down knowing that it was just a huge projection of my own weakness and unwillingness to stick to a plan • Some people say that it’s all about balance, I used to say that to myself as well. The truth for me is that in terms of my health and fitness balance isn’t my jam. A lot of people start a plan and inevitably veer off track, and ultimately end up staying off course. I was guilty of the same self-sabotage. Instead of just getting back on the tracks toward optimal health, I would allow my detours to continue to take me in the opposite direction • I’m still not where I want to be, but I’m closer to where I want to be than where I don’t want to be, and for that I’m thankful. Staying fit and getting better today than yesterday is a priority for me, and an obsession. I’ve chosen to exchange my unhealthy relationship with food and replace it with a more intuitive approach. I’ve basically stopped lying to myself and making excuses for why I can’t be where I want to be. Super bummed about the loss of Jeff Grosso. My mom and his mom are really good friends which has always been funny to me. He was so awesome and we talked a lot back in my film days. I did some portraits of bmx flatland riders today at the OG. The OG is a parking garage in Austin that’s been sessioned by riders for over 20 years now.
