Talking about myself here is still awkward for me! But Ive noticed a number of new folks lately and wanted to let you know how glad I am that youre here! 😊 Im Mya (pronounced mee-ya, very misleading, I know!) Im a Registered Dietitian, but what I do can be better described as food and body therapy. ❌ I dont believe food must be controlled or restricted. ❌ I dont believe health is one size. ❌ I dont believe in shaming bodies. 👉I DO believe dieting is toxic for both physical/mental health 👉I DO believe we are all born with the ability to nourish our bodies through listening to its cues 👉I DO believe joy with food is as important as healthful nutrition. 👉I DO believe health can be achieved regardless of size. 👉I DO believe all bodies deserve respect. Some random facts about me: - In my other job, I am a nutrition faculty and counselor at a Christian University. - Before becoming a Registered Dietitian, I had a corporate career in media/communications. - When I decided to become a dietitian, I went through a health-obsessed phase and turned vegetarian for 5 years. (Glad thats over!!) - Im Korean-American and completely bilingual (I prefer English or Korean for different tasks) - I lived in 9 States, but Seattle is where I call home now and absolutely LOVE it. - I turned 40 this year and would never trade places with my 20 yo self. - I live alone with my cat Momo, but am in a loving, nurturing relationship with my bf whom I met in the most painful year of my life. I started my dietitian career 8 years ago in eating disorders where I learned so much about the intersection between physical and mental health. I also learned a lot about weight stigma and thin privilege(which I totally acknowledge that I have) and I continue to learn. Through that lens, I help people find more compassionate ways of taking care of themselves and their bodies. This is my life’s mission and I feel passionate about supporting ALL bodies to thrive in food and body peace. Im SO glad youre here and want to know HOW I can better support you. We, the undersigned WSN Fall 2020 Editorial Staff, have collectively decided to resign from Washington Square News, effective immediately. This was extensively deliberated in collaboration with 40 staff editors, and it was not a decision we enjoyed making. However, we understand that continuing to work at WSN in our current circumstance would do more harm than good, and we refuse to condone what we have seen over the past three weeks. Three weeks ago, our Editor-in-Chief was fired without warning to the rest of the staff. His termination was the result of a new editorial advisor, Dr. Kenna Griffin, who joined WSN’s staff. We are aware that she is employed by the university and that she is not a member of our publications board. Dr. Griffin’s relationship to WSN and the amount of power she held was never clarified. Though she initially claimed that she would include the managing staff in the process of defining her role, she has yet to follow through with that promise. Since Dr. Griffin was hired, WSN has faced numerous challenges in publication and cohesion. Dr. Griffin was increasingly rude and disrespectful to the staff, despite being repeatedly reminded that her words had a negative effect on staff morale. Dr. Griffin was unnecessarily harsh, and when confronted about her behavior, would defend it by arguing that WSN’s staff is too immature to accept critique. Her feedback was often negative, even when we followed her instructions, and was almost always personal. She defended this behavior by arguing that she was unable to accomplish anything without WSN implementing her instructions. This is untrue; WSN has implemented her advice on multiple occasions. With all the pressure out there in what can sometimes feel like, the big bad world, to eat clean, eat vegan, eat healthy, eat balanced, its no wonder we feel confused, guilty, like were failing. When really, every single body is different. Therefore we will all have different needs when it comes to our health and what we eat. There is no one size fits all. Thats why we believe in mindful eating and living, because it encourages a way of life that is loving. Observing with awareness and when we are aware of our external worlds, and our internal worlds, we know, when we might not be eating food that feels really good to eat, but actually maybe were eating because were tired (nap instead?) bored (do something creative!) or because were sad (cry, phone a friend!). So...I just finished recording yesterday in AIR studios London finishing my master’s, composing for Film, Television and Video Games. • This is been such an unreal experience this year studying in Spain. Sadly, On Your Mark has closed. When I moved to LA from New York, there were 3 commercial casting locations that I can remember, and one of them was Baker Nesbit on La Cienega. I always loved going over to that area, as a P.A. (it was next to John and Petes-a regular spot to pick up drink supplies) then as a Casting Director. It felt so Hollywood -Beverly Center, Fredricks of Hollywood and numerous restaurants and bars that were infamous for celebrity spotting. Cinda and Brian have been amazing colleagues and I am sad to see them go. Last week in #MarVista. I needed to send a certified letter because I was paying a tax bill. And I saw this sign in my local post office. I am lucky. I could drive to another part of the city to a post office I was confident would be open. And I did. But I think of my friends in small towns with just one post office—they drive 30 miles. In rural a post office is a life line. For my friends and neighbors in the city who are poor or have limited mobility—how do they respond to this sign. FedEx or UPS pick up? Yeah right. Too expensive. The establishment of Post Offices is mentioned in the US as a key task of the new Federal Government in Article 1–before it even explains what a president is. And yet these folks who claim to believe in the original text of the constitution allow this abuse. What better example of the need of a lowest cost possible conveyance of small objects from one place to another than voting in a pandemic do you need? A rant: The picture above shows one of my favorite moments in Odds & Ends. The show was designed, from beginning to end, to be performed over video chat/Zoom. That is, with the exception of one piece. That piece is one I’ve been experimenting with for over 10 years. I decided to include it in the show to test if it could be translated to this new medium. The main obstacle to overcome was that this particular piece necessitates someone from the audience physically involved—hence the disembodied hand, playing the role of a participant. To my pleasant surprise, it works. I’ve spent the last 2 hours thinking about the most effective way to place those 2 bills in that disembodied hand, and in the words to accompany the action. After 2 hours of experimentation, I think I found a way that is slightly more effective that what I was doing before. The action is more precise, and I was able to cut a few words from the script, which trims about 1 second of performance time. It’s a little detail, but I think it makes a difference. Leonardo da Vinci is attributed as the first person to have said “Details make perfection, and perfection is not a detail.” Not many people might notice, but I do. And it makes me immensely happy. I feel lucky to have something in my life I’m passionate and excited about. I didn’t find magic, I never aspired to find something that consumes my attention so intensely. Magic found me. I’m lucky. I hope you have something in your life you are passionate about. Something that makes time go faster when you are fully immersed in it. If you haven’t found it, keep searching. It’s out there somewhere, waiting for you. I’m preforming Odds & Ends again today (a few tickets still available for upcoming dates, link in Bio), in collaboration with @magicbarla. We’re not out of the woods yet. On average, Massachusetts restaurants are doing ⅓ of their average sales with takeout, and less than half do not have regular access to an outdoor patio. In the eyes of the public, restaurants are coming back. But on a good day (pre-COVID-19), restaurants operate with a profit margin of 5%. Without access to a patio space, your favorite local spot may not survive with takeout only. We NEED relief. Our first legislative ask calls for state tax incentives for commercial landlords to provide relief to tenants. What happened?!? My sweet, eager-to-please baby has become a defiant monster who does the exact opposite of what I want! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Welcome to toddlerhood. 😱 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At first, I felt angry, took it personally, or judged her as bad. Then I learned that toddlerhood basically = defiance. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At 2 years old, she’s starting to discover that she’s her own person separate from mama. Defiance is how she practices expressing her OWN needs and setting her OWN boundaries. By challenging every boundary I set and by me holding my boundaries, she learns she’s safe with me, which deepens our bond. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Defiance is also a way she communicates that she’s hungry, tired, or overwhelmed, prompting me to take action. So defiance is a very good thing! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Knowing this doesn’t make it much less maddening, but helps me remember that it’s not personal. My main responsibility is to not take it personally. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If my feelings get hurt that she refuses to wear the fall clothes I carefully curated from Target’s latest styles, I stop and take a deep breath. I remind myself that we’re separate people with separate tastes, and that it’s a toddler’s job to try to get me riled up. I’m not falling for that! So I returned the gorgeous maroon dress and bought her her orange jammies even though I hate that color. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s a relief that I can stop worrying that she’s going to turn out to be a destructive social deviant- and remember she’s just being a toddler. Do you know anybody that downs cups and cups of coffee throughout their workday? Or maybe drinks multiple monsters throughout the day? Maybe that person is YOU! How much caffeine are you consuming and what type of risks does drinking all that caffeine pose? Caffeine can be a part of a healthy diet for most people and is the primary ingredient in many pre-workout supplements. If you’re taking it before a workout, it can increase your focus, reduce muscle fatigue, and increase overall performance. The FDA has cited that up to 400mg of caffeine a day appears safe for the average adult. Because caffeine is a stimulant, high doses can have some dangerous side effects. Caffeine can cause: -insomnia -anxiety -jitteriness -nervousness -headaches -digestive issues -rhabdomyolysis (you google that) -addiction -high blood pressure -rapid heart rate A tip that I find useful is to have an earlier cut off time for caffeine intake since it might disrupt sleep later. That is because caffeine has a half-life (which just means the amount of time for half of what you took to be metabolized) of about 5-6 hours. That means that if you took 200mg of caffeine at 9am, by 3pm you would have 100mg left in your system. Light to moderate caffeine has been shown to improve performance, but there is a wide variation to caffeine tolerance in individuals. If you’re experiencing any of these negative side effects, it may be your caffeine intake. Try lowering your dosage and see if those symptoms improve. Interested in working with me?
