Model, Actress, Animator, & Special Effects Artist Milicent Patrick played a huge role in designing the iconic Gill-man costume for ‘Creature from the Black Lagoon’ (1954.) She was never credited for her work. During the promotion for the film, Milicent Patrick was sent out on a press tour called : The Beauty Who Created the Beast, to discuss the creation of the creature. This title was quickly changed by Bud Westmore (the head of the universal make-up department at the time) to The Beauty Who Lives With the Beast.” He did this on purpose to avoid citing Patrick as one of the actual creators of the Gill-man design. When she returned to LA from the tour, she was told that she no longer worked for Universal Studios. She was fired due to Bud Westmores jealousy over her creation of the Gill-man, and her career drifted into obscurity. - @sandyloaf on Instagram

Sembra quasi l’estrema affermazione della propria abilità e del valore della tradizione classica, rinnovata dallo studio della natura: eppure è una figura ormai fuori tempo massimo nella Milano in cui il realismo esemplificato da Vincenzo Vela ha ormai superato da tempo il suo cauto romanticismo. La qualità della lavorazione fa pensare ad un’opera pensata per un’occasione espositiva eccezionale, e il 1855 è l’anno dell’Esposizione Universale di Parigi. In her book The Bell Jar, American poet Sylvia Plaths protagonist describes her severe depression as, A time of darkness, despair, disillusion–so black only as the inferno of the human mind can be–symbolic death, and numb shock–then the painful agony of slow rebirth and psychic regeneration. Plaths novel speaks to the isolation one feels when suffering with mental illness with an honesty that is, at times, confronting. Tonight, I return to her words to reacquaint myself with the shape and pain of her particular darkness, to listen to the echoes of a woman who wasnt afraid of laying all of herself bare. To absorb words as raw as Plaths as a reader is one thing, but to hear similarly dark sentiments spoken by someone you love is quite another. In Australia, today we marked @ruokday as a nation, a time Ive mostly (truth be told) ignored; not because of its meaningful message or its ongoing support of suicide prevention, but because of the strangeness of being reminded by an organised movement that we should show others that we care. Even so, given the chaos of our current social climate, any occasion that encourages deeper connection is crucial, so long as we are willing to be present with both the brutality and beauty of what others may need to share. The truth is many of us endure times of darkness, but the painful agony of slow rebirth isnt something anyone should ever have to feel or experience alone. May we move forward together (always) not to simply ask and selectively listen, but to (as much as we are able) unconditionally love. . . . We talk about self love like it’s an engine we have to start— as if hating ourself is our hardwired baseline. But we didn’t come into this world hating our bodies. As babies, every time our body would change and grow it was a sign of progress, a milestone, something to be celebrated. Have you ever seen a baby do something new with her body for the first time? Whether it’s as simple as bringing her binky to her mouth on her own or taking her first step— She’s stoked about it! Her body grows and changes every week and you can see that she understands she can now do things she couldn’t before and she’s delighted by it! She is so proud of herself! We are so proud of her! She is full of love. So at what age do we stop being stoked by our body growing and changing and start being disgusted by it? At what point did we decide to start hating ourselves? Because it IS a choice. And it takes just as much (if not more) energy to hate yourself than it does to love yourself. Women have chosen hate for a long time and it has yielded no results. Moving in to my final theater week as a professional. I don’t enjoy long posts but I just wanted to say how grateful I am to have been a part of @cltballet and to have danced as long as I have. I couldn’t have done it without my family (thank you for all the long car rides). Thank you also to all my teachers past and present. Thank you especially to Scott, these last years have been all the more special because I get to come home to you, I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.
