Where so big for me in my late teens when i first moved to London and the records are timeless. 4. @ibadanrecords - probably the label that has influenced my sound most of the last few years. Im so grateful for all the positive feedback I have received for last Fridays UnitedWeStream session. Dance music wasnt my main concern in the past couple of weeks and til the very last minute I couldnt really figure out what to play (I realised how privileged Im to even have such concerns in these difficult times). So I just took with me some of my all-time favourite records - which had inspired & shaped my Iron Curtis persona and the ones Id blast out loud when in need for a push and positive vibes (see the tracklist below). Im glad that I was able to contribute at least a tiny bit and may have helped to make a few more people have a good time and realise that there is this thing called club culture that is worth keeping alive. Shawn Reynaldo recently posted a piece on this and what aspects of it should be viewed critically more than ever in these times. Many of Shawns reflections and claims matched my own critical reception of the music scene to quite an extent ( firstfloor.substack.com) Last Fridays session, however, helped me to remember why Im doing all this and why I need this in my life: The pure and utter joy of listening to your favourite music on a big sound system, a bass that hits you, that makes you move and forget the world around you, the company of friends and like-minded people. DAY 7: VINNY APPICE (pronounced: App-ah-see) DIO, Black Sabbath, Last In Line Perhaps pronouncing their last names differently, is a way that younger brother, Vinny, is avoiding being in the shadows of older brother, Carmine Appice (pronounced: Ah-piece) of Vanilla Fudge/Rod Stewart fame, as well the author of the award winning Realistic Rock drum method book my wife and I, coincidently studied out of during our teenage drum lesson years. And if that wasn’t a mouthful, Carmine is also a drum paraphernalia innovator (his signature model drum sticks feature a really cool, innovative tip cut into the butt end of the stick and he also created his “shade” effect cymbal). It’s pretty fair to say big brother, Carmine is living legend. From Vinny at 16 playing on sessions and doing overdub hand claps in the studio with John Lennon, to becoming one of hard rock’s first call drummers, Vinny’s playing is no bullshit, solid AF! As dark, evil and heavy as his dragon slaying groves are, there is an immense swing to his back beat and pocket! Yes, he has the HUGE drum kits for the “big rock show” and he rips around them to excite and delight the audience, but if you really listen to the meat and potatoes of what he’s playing or choosing NOT to play (aka the space/breath/air in the grooves) it’s like none other. Even though I haven’t had the pleasure of making his acquaintance, from what I gather, Vinny is funny. Really funny, and can light up a room with the many stories only this industry veteran can share. The year was 1972, Brazil was under a military dictatorship, a period of persecution, torture and murder. Like many other artists, Manduka left Brazil and went into exile in Chile. Ive really been enjoying trading records again with friends since I dont have a lot of flow right now. Finally checked off my want list, this original green label styrene pressing. Only a few hundred of these were made and they sold out quickly, hence the different colored labels on the vinyl repressings. Don’t get it twisted, styrene can sound really good, amazing even, in clean condition. An incredible two sider, one of the best records from the Berkeley label ever. Maybe the best. Its our Saturday record room special! Today we have former Twister @collecting_all_these_years!! 🤘 “Love music. I’ve been collecting since I was a kid. Started with tapes, jumped to CDs, and ended up acquiring most of my vinyl in the days when people were dumping their collections. Worked in several different record stores in my whimsical 20s (Including Denver’s best Twist & Shout - I’m a little biased lol). DJed in the Denver area for over 20 years in over a dozen clubs, from The Snake Pit to Ophelias (and I played vinyl for the majority of that time). Saw hundreds of concerts during this time. Went to college. Started teaching. Been doing that 15 years but I will always hold record stores and vinyl near and dear to my heart. My wife and I connected at just the right time, and I knew she was the one, when she rolled out the red carpet to my records as I moved in. Now the record room at our house serves as a creativity hub for us, with her amazing @beautifullynovel workshop located in the same space. It does drive me crazy when someone says, ‘Oh I listen to everything.’ Because I don’t. But pretty damn close. I am a music enthusiast. If you love it, I can at the least appreciate it. On September 30th, 1989, ICEHOUSE released the single “Touch The Fire”. The song was one of two new songs to appear on the greatest hits album, Great Southern Land. The other new song was “Jimmy Dean”. The single climbed up to Number 13 on the Australian Singles chart. The video for “Touch The Fire” brought ICEHOUSE one of its very few moments of controversy when the clip was banned by MTV in the United States due to its religious imagery. The recording of “Touch The Fire” reunited the team that worked on ICEHOUSE’s Man of Colours album. David Lord flew to Australia to produce it, David Hemming was the engineer and the song was recorded in the same studio, Studios 301. Las locaciones, se dieron en las afueras de Miami Beach, Florida, EE.UU..🇺🇸 donde los integrantes de la banda actuaron🎭 como protagonistas en el vídeo. La canción Tejedores de Ilusión, cuya letra , se inspiró al cambiar de canal y topar con el canal cristiano, en donde la banda criticaba los valores que promovía aquel canal de TV. El video de la canción, fue grabado en Valle Nevado (Chile) en lo alto de una montaña. La canción tiene una carga nostálgica y melancólica muy grande, y eso se demuestra cuando, se le utiliza durante los homenajes que se le rinden a Andres Bobe 🎸después de su trágico fallecimiento. Este disco fue sin duda en el que la banda experimentó en su mejor época, además los vídeos de los sencillos evolucionaron la forma realizar los videoclips de rock en español. This happened on this date Saturday Night Live . I wanted to have a projection of Mt St Helens erupting behind us. In ode to the Northwest and to where were are from and the marking of history and nature. That day i kept my inner sadness about Ian Curtis to myself , 15 or 16 years earlier he died on that day the day of Mt St Helens erupting actually first time i cried about someone i didn’t know. On a cool aside though I remember looking at Don Pardo’s tea steeping next to his reading glasses and newspaper in his vocal booth. If i could paint its one i would do for sure. The history and the professionalism talk about steeped!!! That booth was so exact to the second even the steam rising was on time and welcomed into the light shining down. Such a nightly ritual. He. wasnt in there but his stuff was. We actually had a skit that was cut from the show too hahaha That night was the last time we saw Jeff Buckley. At the end of the show you can see me lift my arms over my head and if you do that with your shadow it makes an eye.
