SUMMER: THE DONNA SUMMER MUSICAL Tour has officially announced yesterday that we are unfortunately closing the production. I have a bunch of feelings about this, but I am incredibly blessed and grateful to have had this show as my first professional credit and with a cast that surrounded each other with so much talent and love. I thank all of the incredible team both in production and in the show for showing me nothing but kindness and guidance in dealing with my very first tour. I still can’t believe they thought I was good enough to take on. We danced Summer’s Last Dance, but we will all dance again soon 💙 Thank you Miss Donna Summer for your work, your legacy, your perseverance, and granting me the chance to share your story. While tentatively beginning this uncertain new season, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate a personal mile stone. This season/year marks 10 years since I joined The Royal Ballet.. a company I dreamed of joining most of my life and that I am so privileged to be part of today. So many roles, choreographers and theatres I have experienced, too many words could be spent on the infinite pleasures this company has giving me in the past 10 years and that I am sure it will keep giving me. Here is a selected few roles ( one picture for every year) that I had the pleasure of performing. It’s always nostalgic looking back at ones life, but with The Royal Ballet I can truthfully say that looking back brings me joy, laughter and privilege. Another thrilling design project I’m very proud of. Pasadena Playhouse, RAGTIME. 2019. I concept designed Houdini’s “reveal” box for Act 1 and his Metamorphosis trunk prop for Act 2 in addition to playing the role. These pieces were integrated into Scenic Designer Tom Buderwitz’s incredible set design of shifting museum crates and constructed by the fantastic Playhouse shop crew. The “reveal” box was an alternative to the more traditional Houdini entrance of his flying in upside down from the proscenium by his feet, straitjacket and all. An entrance that both the Broadway productions have done in the past and to great effect! The beautiful revival of RAGTIME that I did on Broadway in 2009 had that more traditional approach. For Pasadena, Director David Lee wanted a way to give Houdini an impressive entrance without flying. My solution? An elevated museum crate, dead center, innocuous amidst the rest of the set. When triggered however, it accordions open, its front panel folding down like a three hinged drawbridge, revealing Harry, suspended upside down from a reinforced ankle bar, mid-escape. Once freed, He pulls up and leaps from the box onto the deck to deliver his introduction! Hanging upside down alone in a pitch black coffin sized box waiting for my cue was an exciting and anxiety inducing experience. In Act 2, Harry and Evelyn Nesbit attempt a performance of Houdini’s famous Metamorphosis trick. What is intended as an elegant switch fumbles badly as Evelyn haphazardly flops out of the box. We created a slightly oversized version of the traditional trunk using the original design specs lent to me from legendary magic designer, Jim Steinmeyer. We wanted this version to be more comical and larger than life, accentuating a magic trick “gone wrong”. The actual trunk size is much smaller and a truly an incredible trick to behold! Houdini would make an impossible switch with a tied up assistant in the box under his feet. For this production, we sacrificed structural authenticity for theatrical comedy, rightfully so. @pasadenaplayhouse #magic #design - @darthschrader99 on Instagram
