30 September 1940 Oberleutnant Karl Fischer’s Bf109E-1 (Wn.4851 9+) of 7./Jagdgeschwader 27, after a forced landing near Queen Anne’s Gate, Windsor Great Park, Berkshire. The plane is subject to eager attention from the RAF salvage gang. The mission was a bomber escort. When the formation was on its way to the objective it was attacked by fighters (possibly Hurricanes from 303 Squadron), this aircraft getting into a dog fight. The combat was broken off and the pilot thought that he had not been hit. However an R/T message from his wingman told the pilot that he had a white petrol plume streaming behind and looking at his petrol gauge he noticed that the tanks were almost empty, so he made a forced landing. There were a number of bullet strikes from astern. (The pilot was captured and survived unhurt) Markings: 9 painted on yellow engine cowling. Spinner white, with black circle on tip. 📷 by: @airandspacemuseum In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to expand the civilian pilot training program. Initially, the program excluded African Americans due to myths that African Americans were inferior to their white counterparts when operating sophisticated aircraft. It wasn’t until black newspapers like the Chicago Defender and the Pittsburgh Courier along with the NAACP argued that African Americans should not be left out. In September 1940, the program would be extended first by training black troops in the Tuskegee Army Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. These men were the first African American military aviators in the U.S Army Air Corps. A predecessor to the U.S. Air Force, they were the Buffalo Soldiers of the air. The majority were college graduates or students from all over the country. The training included 1,000 pilots, and nearly 14,000 navigators, bombardiers, instructors, mechanics, control tower operators, maintenance and support personnel. Flying 179 escort missions, reports estimate they lost a total of 25 bombers while other p-51 groups had an average of 46 lost bombers. They would go on to fight in 15,000 individual dogfights/sorties, destroy 273 German planes in the air and on the ground, along with rail cars and other transport vehicles and received over 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses. Their representation would ultimately prepare the nation for a desegregated Armed Forces. The Tuskegee Airmen have inspired fellow barrier breaking pilots like Captain Remoshay Nelson. President Barack Obama stated, “(his) career in public service was made possible by the path heroes like the Tuskegee Airmen trail-blazers”. Adhering to Grummans design philosophy to produce an aircraft in which a pilot could become proficient in a short period of time, and that was easy to operate from a carrier yet could outperform the enemy, the Hellcat was loved by its pilots. This shot was taken while flying over The A Shau Valley Vietnam. We were. Flying to the MACV-SOG, Special Forces Camp to support A MACV-SOG Team going into Laos to check out the Ho Chi Minh Trail there. They were in a Chopper and landing at A known LZ (Landing Zone). Our plane would fly cover for them in case they ran into a group of NVA North Vietnamese Army. When they were secure we would fly back to A Shau Camp and then back to DaNang AB Vietnam.
