The Sydney Harbour Bridge is closed to traffic following a bomb scare, 18 September 1972. Photo by Grant Peterson for The Sydney Morning Herald. Although the scare was a hoax, it followed two terrorist bombings in Sydney only three days earlier, and the establishment of a new police bomb squad of 50 detectives and 3 policewomen. The two terrorist bombs exploded in the inner city busy with Saturday shoppers. The Sydney Morning Herald reported: Both blasts were aimed at Yugoslav travel agencies in the inner City. The first bomb tore apart three shops in crowded George Street, injured 16 people - one critically and two seriously. Minutes later, another bomb - concealed in a shopping bag - ripped apart another building three blocks away The bombings were believed to be related to the execution of Croations with Australian passports in Yugoslavia. Its a Water Street Wednesday reveal! Last Wednesdays image was of Town & Country Pastry and Coffee Shop at One Water Street, built ca. 1954 and now home to Haskells Port of Excelsior. This coffee shop was remodeled to house Excelsiors Municipal Liquor Store and Lounge by 1957. After more remodelings, the grand opening of The Port of Excelsior was announced in 1976. It had a nautical aura, with Captain and Crew dressed in nautical-wear and featuring a rooftop beacon, wheel house, the Pilot House for after dinner crowd, Main Bar with brass rail, Stow-a–way lounge for more informal gatherings and an adjacent liquor store called the Cargo Hold. In 1979 this municipal business was sold to Haskells, who own and operate it today. Set in an industrial-chic space that pays homage to the neighborhood of Fort Points shipping and warehouse history, Trillium is considered one of the finest breweries in a city known for its breweries. Cool. So who’s there? The crowd skews a little junior—many young professionals work in this part of town—but anyone with an appetite for high-quality beer is welcome. In a single night, youre likely to see couples on dates, groups of colleagues unwinding after work, and neighborhood regulars stopping by to refill their growlers. Tell us about the beers. Any styles the brewery specializes in? All brewing takes place on-site in a mix of stainless steel barrels and traditional oak foeders. Trillium has won numerous awards and accolades over the years for its range of beers, especially its Double and Triple IPAs. The menu is a rotating blend of classics as well as experimental and seasonal offerings, all of which are only available for sale here (or at the brewerys other location in Canton, Mass.). The Congress Street IPA is a hit, but dont overlook the smaller-batch, seasonal offerings, like the blackberry, blueberry, and peach barrel-fermented wild ales. Sour beers, dark ales, pale ales, lagers, you name it: Theres something for every palate here. Worth ordering something to eat, too? The eats here blow most other brewery menus out of the water: poutine with a decadent duck gravy, a nicely curated New England cheese plate, and even a bone-in ribeye with hand-cut fries. Hows the service? Sometimes a brewerys staff can seem off-putting and pedantic if you dont present as someone who can easily recognize the difference between a Double and Triple IPA. Not the case here. So dont feel shy about asking for help as you consider what to order. Wrap it up: what are we coming here for? This is a near-perfect craft brewery that represents the best of Boston, both yesterday and today. Trillium is an essential stop for beer lovers of all tastes.
