Ouch. These past few months I’ve spent a lot of time focusing on what I’ve lost because of going booze free. I let a small portion of it consume me. I didn’t realize how much of my identity was wrapped up in being a drinker. All I could see was all the fun I was missing out on and it felt like extreme torture. All the events I said no to. All the connections over wine lost. My extensive rosè collection...Dinner, birthdays, date nights, parties....all I could see is what I lost. I would love to say it’s getting easier but honestly it’s just getting more expansive in my soul. When something has controlled you for all of your adult life, it doesn’t just float away. Today I sat down and made a list of all the things being sober had provided for me. Sometimes all we need is a simple shift in perspective! So here we go! Being sober has provided me with: Less inflammation Hundreds of dollars Clear and focused thinking Deeper connection to my kids New relationship with my husband Mega drop in anxiety Zero hangovers Loss of crappy friends Connection with new and old friends Sunday coffee dates Fitness goals skyrocketed No more next day apologies Cleaner house Better finances Time for spiritual/mental development Ohhhh and I’ve healed sooo much trauma and pain I had allowed alcohol to mask. I’m not the same person I once was. And I don’t ever plan on going back to whoever that girl was. I’m proud of me for doing something I never EVER thought I could do. Being proud of yourself is one of the most amazing gifts you’ll ever give yourself. It set me off on a course of self forgiveness and it feels amazing. Thanks for hanging out for my ted talk! I woke up this morning and became informed of the real meaning behind the sentiment of my previous post and the womens empowerment challenge thats currently taking place. . In my ignorance, I spent 3hrs researching Pinar Gültekin, femicide, womens violence worldwide, the Istanbul Convention, GREVIO, the countries who ratified the convention and those who have withdrawn from it and why. I felt inspired to compile some of the information here. . World Health Organisation (WHO) and Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) have developed a series of information sheets on violence against women (VAW). It summarizes what is known about the prevalence, patterns, consequences, risk factors and strategies to address the different forms of it. The sheets are designed for practitioners, researchers and policy-makers, but I encourage you all to explore them. . Something that stuck with me was that VAW comprises a wide range of acts – from verbal harrasment and other forms of emotional abuse, to daily physical or sexual abuse. At the far end of the spectrum is femicide: the murder of a woman. Collecting correct data on femicide is challenging, largely because in most countries, police and medical data-collection systems that document cases of homicide often do not have the necessary information or do not report the victim–perpetrator relationship or the motives for the homicide, let alone gender-related motivations for murder. . This highlighted to me the significance of intersectionality in dismantling the patriarchy. There is so much to be done but having some initial thoughts is a good start. . If you are a man reading this, please take a moment to reflect on instances where you have verbally/emotionally harrassed a woman - e.g. on the street, in a relationship or in a club. This one hit. Code switching is something Ive had to deal with my whole life, as many other black people have. Ive previously shared my experiences moving to this country at age 11 and having to hide my strong Nigerian accent and forcefully adopt a British one in order to not be teased by my white classmates, and unbeknown to me, that attempt to fit in haunted me for the next 18 years. I actually naturally still have my Nigerian accent, but it only comes out when Im at home with my family, or amongst my very close friends. I wouldnt think of ever using it at work and these slides explain why very well. You feel uncomfortable, you feel judged, you feel like youre imposing too much of your foreign self on your mainly white environment. You have to do it in bits, and it has to be on their terms. Oh, how you do you say x in your language, and thats the one foreign input done for the day. Bringing traditional food into work is a few and far between occurrence. Why? The questions, the noses turned up because people arent used to the smell of actual seasoning 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️. Code switching has personally made me lose track of my identity as a black man as I recently admitted and spoke on. I know others who have spoken about it and no doubt others who havent spoken, have gone through it and are going through it. What do we do? Be unapologetic about your blackness. . IMPORTANT POST: I’ve not been on this account since the start of Dec and it’s something that i’ve felt quite guilty about. The truth is, when I was really struggling this account was one of the only things really keeping me going. I made this account to record my feelings and to meet other abuse survivors as I felt incredibly lonely and depressed. But over a year on since I began therapy, things have massively changed. I’m honestly the happiest that I have been in a long time. I’m loving university, my PTSD, depression and anxiety has decreased significantly, and I feel much more comfortable in my own skin. Sure I do have occasional down days and I know on those days I drink way too much and party too hard as a form of escapism - but in comparison to 2019, I feel like a different person since coming to uni. Meeting people, sharing my experience and documenting my recovery for the straight 308 days that I did, unfortunately started to become draining. This sounds incredibly selfish - but it was hard to enjoy getting on with my day (and life), whilst at the end of every day having to describe my emotions and think about my abuse. So I will continue to run this account, but not a daily post which I hope you can understand. I hope that i’m not being too selfish. So that is that. That is where i’ve been these past few months. I saw my abuser over christmas, and although difficult - it was fine. I have the support of my brother and of some amazing friends and that’s what helped me get through that annual family meal. I’m praying from the bottom of my heart that all of you guys are doing as okay as you can be, and i’m sorry for going for so long without an explanation. When I bought my first house, it was literally a first experience, so I just went with whatever would be the most affordable mortgage. Let me tell you how REAL manifestations are. My dog died like three days before Memorial Day, and we sat in the house sad the whole weekend. Monday morning (Memorial Day), I got up, wrote my list down of everything that next house had to have... hopped on line... and started searching... Now, I’ll be honest, I had never even did a search for this amount before, but I was like eff it, 2020 doing whatever it wants to, why not me.. The house I wanted was the first house we looked at. The exact house I picked. I told the realtor “I want this house. We can go look at others, but this one checks off the list I made”, and I showed it to her. She took us to some other houses, but I walked in, and literally walked back out. I had my mind made up... Made an offer, two days later, I got a call saying they accepted it... 32 days later, sis had KEYS 🔑 My credit is A1, so it saved me from a reckless mortgage amount, and a bomb interest rate. I tell people all the time, 620 score might get you a house, but not the one you want... strive to get it higher than the minimum requirement. That’s with everything you do... Long story short; I’m fascinated by our resiliency and how we are able to bounce back and become better, stronger humans after enduring even the most horrific traumas. I want you to honor your traumas, not be ashamed of them.
