Our neighbors at @unionstationkc announced their next large exhibition coming to Kansas City: Auschwitz. Not long ago. Not far away, featuring 700+ original artifacts and 400 photographs. Opens June 2021. Last year, we hosted the international Holocaust remembrance outdoor exhibition Lest We Forget, featuring 70 large-scale portraits of Holocaust survivors from across the world and 7 from Kansas City. We were deeply moved by the outpouring of support for the project and the large numbers of visitors to witness these stories and faces. WWI did not directly lead to WWII. But the experiences of devastating conflict and the resulting unstable “peace” set the stage for the rise of fascism. Today was Opening Day at Citi Field for this most unusual of Baseball Seasons. I have been at every Mets Opener since 1985, and at a few before that. Hello again friends. I made this painting on the last day of my trip to the Eastern Sierra’s. I wanted to explore the area by Owens river as a friend told me there was good flyfishing there. It was such a serene and peaceful place, there was barely any other people around. The cows however were extremely noisy and curious, and a number of occasions I had to shoosh them away. I decided to put the cows in the painting at the very end, it’s the first time I’ve introduced animals into my landscape painting. Do you think they work OK? Sunlight hardly penetrates into the depths of this place thus giving it the name Black Canyon. The Gunnison River flowing through the canyon remains near freezing temperatures for most of the year. I made this image a little after midday, when the sun finally struck the lower levels of the canyon and the fresh Spring greens cast a painterly look on the surface of the water. Some reflected light bouncing off the canyon walls added to the unique conditions at the bottom of the canyon.
