El proyecto de explotación minera Los tres amigos , en el sector de Varillar comuna de Vicuña, es catalogado como pequeña minería y abarca una superficie de 90.000m2 y una estimación de 108.000 toneladas de recursos minerales aproximadamente de oxidados de cobre. La explotación conlleva operaciones de perforación, tronaduras, carga y transporte del material durante un tiempo de 43 meses y una capacidad de extracción de 364 toneladas. Frente a este acontecer la comunidad es clara en rechazar la actividad minera a cualquier escala que atente contra la calidad de vida y el ecosistema local. El gato montés de Escocia (Felis silvestris silvestris) y el lince ibérico (Lynx pardinus) pertenecen a la misma gran familia de los félidos. Ambas especies comparten rasgos comunes, como un oído agudo y una vista excelente para cazar sus presas con extraordinario sigilo. Otras peculiaridades les separan, como las características patillas que cuelgan desde las mejillas del lince y el evidente parecido del felino escocés con los gatos domésticos, lo que dificulta su identificación tras años y años de mestizaje. Lamentablemente, sendos primos también coinciden en que están en la lista de especies que se encuentran en peligro de extinción. Una amenaza que les ha unido en un mismo objetivo de tratar de garantizar la conservación y su posterior reintroducción en el medio natural. El gato montés de Escocia, que antaño vivía por toda Gran Bretaña, sobrevive hoy solo en las Highlands escocesas. Ante esta situación, la Junta de Andalucía colabora en el partenariado internacional Saving Wildcats, ofreciendo asesoramiento, en calidad de experto, para el desarrollo de un programa de cría en cautividad de su primo escocés. En este proyecto de conservación que lidera la Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), colaboran también otras entidades de Escocia (NatureScot, Forestry and Land Scotland, The Cairngorms National Park Authority) y Suecia (Nordens Ark). Para RZSS, la experiencia de 17 años de cría en cautividad del lince ibérico en Andalucía puede ser clave para evitar la desaparición del felino escocés. Even giants fall The circle of life is harsh and relentless. The rotting carcass of an Elephant bull provides shade during the heat of the day to a nomadic male Lion. The smell was putrid, the flies were intense, yet this Lion stays true to his claimed prize and continued to feed on the carcass throughout the day. The Elephant bull died of natural causes during a fight with another younger bull for dominance. Mavuso, as he was named, was estimated to be around 55 years old and formed part of one of the original Tuskers introduced to Pilanesberg from Kruger in 1998. Rescatan un pequeño Gato Montés tras caer en una trampa metálica Ocurrió en Aluminé donde los guardafaunas neuquinos lograron recuperarlo de su estado crítico de salud. Recuerdan que los carnívoros silvestres nos ofrecen servicios ecológicos al controlar las poblaciones de roedores, conejos y liebres. Aluminé es noticia nuevamente por el rescate de un joven gato montés (Leopardus geoffroyi) que quedó atrapado en trampas metálicas. Una vez más la comunidad demuestra la gran red de personas que piensan la atención y contención de la fauna silvestre. En estos contextos se renueva una pregunta muy recurrente por estos lares ¿Somos capaces como seres humanos de compartir el territorio con otras especies? El animal fue víctima de dos cepos que le produjeron graves heridas al prenderse uno en cada pata trasera. Esto sumado al cuadro de hipotermia generado por las bajas temperaturas y las horas que permaneció inmóvil en la nieve, le generó un estado crítico de salud. El pasado jueves 9 de julio, una vecina del paraje de Abra Ancha avisó al equipo de Guardafaunas que había encontrado un Gato Montés atrapado en dos trampas que ella había ubicado para capturar a un ejemplar de Visón Americano, mamífero exótico que también visita gallineros. Sin embargo el hallazgo fue otro, el felino correspondía a un macho joven muy delgado que debe haberse visto forzado a acercarse a asentamientos humanos para buscar comida. Según comentó la vecina, el mismo Gato Montés ya le había atrapado gallinas antes. Ante el aviso se hizo presente Martín Salazar, de la Dirección Provincial de Fauna, la veterinaria de la Reserva Natural Urbana Quilquelil, Carolina Marull, que cuenta con una vasta experiencia en manejo de fauna silvestre y el Director del Museo municipal El Charrúa, Titi Ricciuto, siempre disponible para estos desafíos Se encontró al Gato Montés con graves heridas en sus dos patas traseras y en estado de hipotermia. Fue sedado y medicado en el mismo gallinero usando instrumental y medicamentos provistos por la veterinaria Gilda Vallejos. We have some sad news to report. 😔 We’ve learned that an adult female bobcat and a subadult male mountain lion have both died directly from the effects of anticoagulant rat poisons (or anticoagulant rodenticides, also known as ARs). Link to press release in bio. . Both deaths occurred in the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains north of the Santa Monica Mountains this year. We recently received the necropsy reports. . This marks just the second time in our 24-year study that a bobcat, in this case B-372, has been determined to have died directly from the effects of these poisons, and the first time in 23 years. P-76, a subadult male captured in Northridge late last year and jointly studied by NPS and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), died of anticoagulant toxicosis in the Santa Susana Mountains. . “We basically never see this in bobcats, so this is an important finding” said Joanne Moriarty, a biologist who has worked on bobcat research for more than 15 years. According to Moriarty, an examination performed during her capture in January determined that she was in good health, and that she had given birth in the past. . Researchers have seen coagulopathy (uncontrolled bleeding) leading to death in coyotes, foxes, and mountain lions in the study area, but typically not bobcats. . P-76 is the sixth collared mountain lion to die of coagulopathy and the third in the last two years. He was captured and collared by California Department of Fish & Wildlife officers in November 2019 in an urban neighborhood in Northridge, just outside of Los Angeles. . In the case of P-76, his collar went on “mortality mode” the night of January 29, 2020. His carcass was recovered the following morning by NPS and CDFW biologists in the Santa Susana Mountains, north of Highway 118. It has been a busy winter for lynx on the Anchorage hillside. The snowshoe hare population peaked about last year, and snowshoe hare are the primary food source for lynx. Typically, the lynx population peaks about 1 to 2 years after the snowshoe hare population. At our property, we have had a family with an adult and four juveniles making routine trips through our backyard. It was a day when I saw Amur leopard for my first time. Beautiful October, silent forest, checking camera traps during our first expedition to the northern part of Leopard Land NP... I was out of humor, a bit tired, deep in my thoughts when ranger cried: Leopard, leopard, look! It was in about 100 meters of us, running away to the pines grove. I thought it was a ghost till the moment we got camera trap records with us and the leopard with time difference of 5 minutes. Lynxes are being considered for reintroduction in Ireland as part of an extensive re-wilding project. These magnificent wildcats used to be widespread across the island of Ireland once upon a time, but were driven to domestic extinction due to loss of habitat and human hunting. In 1934, fossil remains of a young Eurasian lynx turned up amongst the findings excavated.
