As someone who has built a career providing thoughtful, data-driven training and consulting products to help eradicate inequity, including racial inequity, this is deeply alarming. The hard work that so many of us do to engender positive social change, to realize the dream of antiracism, is being branded un-American propaganda. It should be alarming to you too. Open any history book and read about the early moves taken in every fascist regime. Read about the ways they squashed dissenting voices by labeling them unreliable (fake news) and then divisive (unpatriotic) and eventually criminal. Read about the ways that fear, particularly fear of difference, was used to justify military action against citizens, to legitimize vigilante justice, and eventually usher in genocide. We do not need to be a nation of consensus. A plurality of ideas and opinions, views and beliefs are necessary for a functioning democracy. We do, however, need to put a stop to those things that threaten participatory democracy itself, that silence and oppress. Act within your capacity to act. Care within your capacity to care. Marijuana businesses impacted by recent natural disasters or that have experienced financial distress due to the coronavirus pandemic would be eligible for federal relief programs under new legislation introduced in the House of Representatives and Senate on Thursday. Because cannabis remains federally prohibited, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has explicitly denied the industry—and businesses that work indirectly with it—access to its relief programs like other markets. That means, for example, marijuana farmers in states like California and Oregon that have seen their crops destroyed by wildfires are fully dependent on state and local assistance. The new Small Business Disaster Relief Equity Act would resolve that problem, stipulating that disaster- or COVID-related services, grants, loans and tax benefits that are made available through federal agencies or congressional legislation cannot be denied to cannabis businesses solely because of the nature of their work, as long as it is in compliance with state law. What’s more, the bill states that the the heads of federal agencies that administer disaster relief such as SBA “shall, to the greatest extent practicable, allow State-legal cannabis businesses to retroactively apply for such disaster assistance.” Sens. The future is now • • • • • • Los Angeles, California An amicus brief filed with the U.S. Supreme Court this week challenges the constitutionality of marijuana’s prohibited status under the decades-old legal regime. Submitted by attorneys on behalf of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (#NORML), the 36-page filing focuses on two-plus decades worth of state-based efforts to legalize #marijuana in varying degrees. Specifically, the brief juxtaposes those successful reforms against the increasingly lax and permissive attitude of all three branches of the federal government viz. marijuana. “A supremacy and nullification crisis has loomed for the past 24 years with regard to the 34 States that implemented some form of cannabis legalization program despite its prohibited Schedule I designation under the federal Controlled Substances Act (#CSA),” the filing notes. “This crisis has been fomented by all branches of government. Each have made statements and taken actions to protect and further the #state #cannabis programs despite #federal #illegality. States have passed cannabis regulations that defy federal supremacy.” Filed as a supplementary brief in the case of Washington v. Barr, NORML also notes that, since 2014 Congress has consistently passed appropriations riders that “handcuff” the Executive branch and federal law enforcement–prohibiting them from using federal funds to investigate and prosecute marijuana users or distributors who are in compliance with state law and regulations. Additionally, the brief points out, federal courts have validated those prohibitions and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) previously issued “prosecutorial guidance memoranda” that constrained the federal government from going after state-compliant marijuana businesses. - (Continued in Comments) - @cagefreecannabis on Instagram

Look at the contrast between these two photos. In the first, taken at the anti-lockdown protest in Trafalgar Square yesterday, a woman is violently punched in her stomach and sent flying by cops who were absolutely determined to shut the protest down. In the second, taken in London a few months ago, police officers cravenly “take the knee” to Black Lives Matter protesters. They allowed BLM protests to take place, just as they also allowed Extinction Rebellion to occupy parts of London. We now live under a completely politicised police force. If you share the liberal elite’s political worldview — you support BLM, you love XR, you are woke — the police will leave you be. If you deviate from the liberal elite’s political worldview — you hate lockdown, you think statues should be protected from attack, you are unwoke — the police will assault and silence you. Reposted from @beardbros_pharms - Studying cannabis is really, really, difficult in the United States. - Just ask Dr. Sue Sisley, who has spent the last ten years trying to complete the first clinical trial of cannabis use for #PTSD in #veterans. The study, sponsored by the non-profit Multidisciplinary Associations for Psychedelic Studies (#MAPS), finished its groundbreaking research earlier this year after it was approved by the #FDA all the way back in 2011. Dr. Sisley overcame multiple obstacles to complete the study, including being fired from her job at the University of Arizona. - “We are immensely grateful to all of the study’s supporters,” Dr. Sisley wrote in a press release announcing the study’s completion, “especially the veteran service organizations who helped us with patient recruitment. We are proud to have persevered through these regulatory hurdles independently of hospitals, universities, or the VA system.” - Dr. Sisley’s study represents an outlier for cannabis research, in part because it happened, and in part, because it was geared towards veterans using cannabis as a treatment—not as a disorder. - Last year, Rolling Stone laid out how absurdly difficult it is to do any research with cannabis, in spite of the DEA claiming they were “streamlining” the research application process. The DEA essentially changed the application from mail-based to electronic, but, as Rolling Stone lays out, all of the other obstacles remain for researchers: approval from three agencies (the DEA, FDA, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse) and extra barriers to procurement. - While various federal agencies hem-and-haw about a substance that over 60% of Americans support legalizing, veterans struggle every day and other countries like Canada and Israel are taking the lead on medicinal cannabis research.
