Minimal Wave Records and Bitter Lake Recordings are happy to present their first collaborative release, a double LP by mythical Japanese underground electronic trio Portray Heads. Order in the bio linktree Their self-titled double LP spans all their recordings to date including the songs from their rare “Elaborate Dummy” flexi (1985) and follow-up “Oratorio” (1986) Influenced by early 1980s European New Wave and Japanese synthpop, their songs range from circular poppy synth gems to moody dark new wave anthems – all led by strong female vocals. The release is limited to 999 copies pressed on 160 gram black double vinyl, presented in a high quality matte gatefold jackets featuring a rare photograph and the story behind the band. Now THIS is the business. Obscure, weirdly forgotten synth wave industrial pop music from suburban Japan, how could music this good be buried under memory rubble? The compilation opens with the groups debut flexi double hitter, Elaborate Dummy / Watch Your Scope. The former bursts in with a robotically funky, arpeggiated analog synth and staccato vocal from Ayumi Tokunaga which makes this feel like an immediate classic, big Severed Heads, early Industrial funk vibes.The flip to original flexi features a heavy synth riff with an attitude-laden Tokunaga vocal, feeling like Suburban Lawns played on Korgs. The sound can also veer towards a more cold, Goth mood as on Industrial Eye with its ghostly synth lines and sampled bassline and alternate vocalist Yumi Ochis desperation. So much of Portray Heads admittedly minimal output feels like its ripped straight from the cold wave / industrial crossover of the early European 80s yet theres often more adventurous ideas, a slightly more dance-heavy groove, really its bizarre its taken Minimal Wave and Bitter Lakes intervention with this compilation to place Portray Heads in the company they deserve to be in the canon. - @monorail_music on Instagram

I believe that the sitter has the power (or more power than I have) over what’s being presented. I’m not overly choreographing the women I work with; I’m really trying to capture a quality within them. They are presenting to me, through their lens, how they want to be represented. That’s where the collaboration happens. And the fact that the gaze in question is from one woman to another is more powerful, to me, than the male gaze. But I think the female gaze is still connected to the concept of the male gaze; we are all shaped by the dominant cultural norms. Poem - The Black American Vote I just dont understand. Our people fought so hard for the right to vote. Yet I am disturbed and perplexed by black americans using these precious voting rights on electing and reelecting this clown in the white House. I wont address by him his title as there is nothing about his rhetoric or behaviour that is presidential. When someone shows you who they are, believe them. He has shown that he hates us, has no respect for us and does not care about the police and the justice system murdering us. He has made this message plain and simple in the most basic language that even a 5 year old can understand and trust me, he is a very simplistic man. He is a Narcissist. A White Nationalist. A Racist. Egocentric. #TBT In the early 70s One night, Brook and Stormie were sleeping at the (Carmel Valley) ranch in the hay barn, waiting for a mare to foal. Late that night a car pulled into the ranch. It turned around, stopped, and the passenger door opened. A dog was pushed out. The car door slammed, and the car drove off into the night. They whistled to the dog and it came. It was a very large gray speckled puppy with four white feet. The puppy slept with them in the barn and the next morning they told their mom the story. She said he looked like a Great Dane puppy, but she didnt know for sure. So, she named him Honk, for Heaven Only Knows what he is. Honk became Sue Sallys constant companion for the next 14 years.
