A New Calf for the Southern Resident Orcas! It has been just two years since Tahlequah (J-35), a member of the endangered Southern Resident orca population, gave birth to a calf, who lived only half an hour. Last week, Tahlequah gave birth once again. And according to the Center for Whale Research on September 6th, her new baby, J-57, appears to be doing well: “Her new calf appeared healthy and precocious, swimming vigorously alongside its mother in its second day of free-swimming life. We know that it was not born today because its dorsal fin was upright, and we know that it takes a day or two to straighten after being bent over in the womb, so we assign its birthday as September 4, 2020. (Ergo gestation commenced in February 2019). . The good news and excitement over the new birth is tempered by the fact that the southern residents are officially designated an endangered population and that the mortality rate for young calves is 40 percent. Their troubles are largely due to three factors: the continuing decline of their preferred food chinook salmon; boat noise and traffic; and the pollution of the waters of the Salish Sea. However, the new baby is the third to be born to the southern residents since 2019, and the other two continue to survive. We wish them all well in the days ahead! We sure picked an amazing week to run four of our famous Extended 8hr Offshore Trips! We had glassy blue water, blue skies, and BLUE WHALES! All of our trips encountered multiple Blue Whales, including cow/calf pairs and some VERY friendly large adults! (see video on our Facebook page!) There has been so much whale activity about 60-70 miles offshore, and while these trips enjoyed the worlds largest animal, there was also reports of Orcas and Sperm Whales in the outer waters! Thats what makes these extended trips so special, you just never know what we might find out there! Фотография убивает мечты но и даёт им шанс сбыться. Когда смотришь на мир через окошко видоискателя все немножко по-другому. Чаще стал ловить себя на мысли, пытаясь поймать момент в кадре, я перестаю его чувствовать. Детская мечта увидеть касаток, не китов не дельфинов не белух что живут на моем родном море. А именно этих черно-белых китов убийц 🥋может быть от них у меня любовь к этим цветам ) Но в тот момент когда они появились я смотрел на них через ряд стёкол телеобъектива и этот миг был не таким как я себе его представлял. Кто-то рядом плакал, кто-то смеялся, кричал или восторгался как ребёнок от увиденного. Мои мысли были о том что нужно поменять объектив чтобы сделать общий кадр) о том как они движутся в каком направлении и где появятся в следующий момент. В погоне за идеальным кадром. Получается что благодаря фотографии оказываешься на съемках в очень красивых местах но у тебя нет шанса просто насладиться моментом, есть обязательства, тебе нужно снимать. Но с другой стороны если бы не было обязательств, скорее всего я делал тоже самое, ведь не снимать просто не могу. The Matriarch: A11 was an incredible mother. Not only to her own daughter, A35, who now continues to grow her own family, but A11 took on the role of adopted mother to Springer, A73. After Springer was re introduced into the Northern resident orca community in 2002 she spent many years in the company of A11 and her family until sadly in 2013, A11 passed away. Her legacy lives on in every recording we make. The beautiful delivery of the N4 passed down from generations before her now transfers to the newest member of the family, A52’s baby, born this year! While widely distributed, little is known about their biology. However, they have large mouths with 2-3 fang-like teeth accompanied by many smaller teeth, which would indicate that they are predatory. - F A T F I N - C A 1 7 1 B - is an orphaned adult male killer whale. Born around the turn of the century he has become a favorite of California whale watchers. Orphaned at a very young age when his mother died in the early 2000’s his survival is actually very uncommon for a whale orphaned so young. He is frequently seen traveling alone but is also sighted with other orphaned males, or sometimes with other CA Biggs matrilines. — Fatfin is easily identifiable by his thicc dorito shaped dorsal fin and his unusually slim eye patch. He is most frequently spotted in Monterey Bay, but has been seen as far north as British Colombia. Last seen on Saturday, we are excited to see where this badass whale will pop up next! Para la mayoría de las ballenas la distancia es de 100 metros y para la ballena azul las embarcaciones se deben mantener al menos a 300 metros. The newest Southern Resident orca, just a few weeks old, has been confirmed to be a BOY. According to reports, baby (J57) and his mom Tahlequah (J35) are both doing well. . It has been two years since Tahlequah lost her young calf who lived for only half an hour, whom she carried for 17 days in a Tour of Grief that garnered worldwide attention. . The endangered Southern Resident population of the Salish Sea continue to face the challenges of their declining food source of chinook salmon, boat noise and traffic, and pollution. The birth of J57 is very good news, bringing the population of these whales to 73. As the practice of keeping cetaceans in captivity continues to be put under fire in the West (and rightly so), it’s becoming ever more popular and prominent in the East, with wild killer whales at the forefront of a long line of victims. While a range of oceanic dolphins are targeted by the captivity trade, orcas are among the most prized, with a single untrained orca fetching between one and five million dollars. Unfortunately, captive breeding programmes (although unethical themselves) are unable to keep up with the demand for captive orcas, so up-and-coming marine parks turn to wild-capture operations instead. Between 2012 and 2018 more than 30 orca calves were taken from the wild for the captivity trade. While 10 lucky individuals were released, the majority ended up in concrete tanks to be exploited for the rest of their lives. In the case of Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park’s four orcas, they’ve already been trained and put on display, and are already suffering the consequences of confinement. This vicious cycle of brutality and exploitation can be broken. By reducing profits or even causing losses, the demand is cut, aquariums are shut down and wild-captures are prevented. We can all show our respect for these creatures by simply taking responsibility for our own actions and decisions! Everyday things like... * Not drinking out of plastic water bottles * Reading the labels on nasty cleaning products that all end up in the ocean * Using reusable bags for fresh fruit and veg * Changing from plastic to glass for food storage * Picking up rubbish on the beach instead of walking past it! * Educating ourselves on animal agriculture so we can make a informed decision on what to support based on the waste that ends up in the oceans! * Try and shop at bulk food stores to avoid all the single use plastic All these things don’t take any extra time but make a massive difference for the only home these whales have! Cute little things! This is the pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata), a species of dolphin found in all the worlds temperate and tropical oceans. The species was beginning to come under threat due to the killing of millions of individuals in tuna purse seines. In the 1980s, the rise of dolphin-friendly tuna capture methods saved millions of the species in the eastern Pacific Ocean and it is now one of the most abundant dolphin species in the world. I shot this at ISO 6400, not an ideal ISO for blowing up prints to fill an entire wall perhaps, but pushing my ISO is what enabled me to capture this image (and I’m still able to print it the size of a standard gallery print). Today’s tip: Don’t be afraid to push your ISO when photographing wildlife. Coming from more of a landscape and portrait background, you learn very early on to never compromise your photo by increasing the ISO over a certain point, really if at all. It is always ideal to have the lowest ISO possible and to keep it at 100. To preserve the photo and keep the ISO low, landscape and portrait photographs will make use of a tripod in order to allow them to slow down their shutter speed to let in more light while maintaining a sharp image. In the case of wildlife photography, it is essential to be flexible with your ISO and push it to maintain a fast enough shutter speed to enable your camera to capture a moving subject in low light like an orca in dark water under minimal daylight. Last week a humpback whale made its way down the St. Lawrence River, all the way to Montreal, Quebec. We’ll never know why it charted this course so far from its ocean salt water home.. and sadly it was found floating belly up in the shallows yesterday. It was a welcome distraction from our current events for the Montrealer’s who got to witness it’s magical displays of breaching over the course of a few days before it died. In honour of this beautiful animal who dazzled so many, I dedicate this post to its memory. I’ve also titled this image ‘Youppi’ & will be available soon for you to add to your collection. Youppi for those who are unaware is a Montreal staple. The always fun & energetic mascot for the Montreal Canadiens & formerly of the Montreal Expos. Protecting whales isnt just about saving animals. Its in humanitys best interest to help these majestic marine mammals thrive once again. Heres one reason why... There are about 1.3 million great whales across all our oceans today. Their pre-commercial whaling numbers were between 4 and 5 million. Economists at the International Monetary Fund have calculated that great whales could capture around 1.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide each year (by sequestering it in their massive bodies and also stimulating phytoplankton growth with their massive poops 💩). Thats more carbon capture than Brazils entire annual carbon emissions! Este ha sido el encuentro cercano con ballenas más impactante que me ha tocado vivir. Mientras nos acercábamos por detrás de las ballenas cuando salían a respirar, sin querer mi amigo Bernardo, quien manejaba diestramente el zodiak en Alaska para que yo pudiera fotografiar la cola al hundirse, se acercó demasiado cuando emergió, lo que provocó una reacción de un gran coletazo de advertencia a escasos metros. La violencia y el estruendo fue algo indescriptible. Our showstoppers today on Stellwagen Bank were Dome and Music’s 2020 calf. We encountered Dome on both trips today. In the morning she was surface active and in the afternoon she was feeding with some bubble blasts and surface lunging. Music and calf were close to the boat in the afternoon and the calf spent a lot of time laying and rolling on top of mom. This shot of a dolphin and her newborn calf racing towards Small Skellig was taken 4 years ago by my then 13 year old niece, Riona. And today is Riona’s 17th birthday. Ive taken thousands of pictures and Im still dreaming of capturing a moment this good. This is the photo thats on my phones lock screen. Riona took it on a little Samung camera phone and I dont know what divinely-inspired timing was at play but I didnt even have to straighten the horizon line of the original photo. Anyone who’s ever taken a picture from a moving boat knows that it’s virtually impossible to get a level shot. Can we give her a like to encourage her to keep taking awesome photos?
