Under the title MADONNA CHILDREN the Grafikkabinett in the Kunstmuseum Basel Hauptbau will be showing a hitherto unexplored facet of the museums history by means of the rich archive material. On view until 24 January 2021. Encouraged by Margaret, Princess of Hesse and near the Rhine, the government council of the canton of Basel-Stadt enabled 20 Darmstadt children aged between seven and thirteen to spend four weeks a year in Davos between 1953 and 1958. The new loans to be granted for this purpose formed a payment for the loan of the so-called “Darmstadt Madonna” by Hans Holbein the Younger to the Kunstmuseum Basel. On their journey from Darmstadt to Davos, the Madonna Children made regular stops at the Kunstmuseum Basel to view the painting. In addition to the Dresden painting, however, there was another version, which - after its later place of storage – is called the Darmstadt Madonna, also to distinguish the two versions from each other. In the 19th century, the question of which of the two versions was the original gave rise to the so-called Holbein dispute among artists, art historians and laymen. While artists and laymen clearly saw the original in the Dresden version, art historians finally came to the conclusion that the Darmstadt painting was the original. Meanwhile, the Dresden copy is attributed to Bartholomäus Sarburgh. I’ve been thinking about French painting a lot lately for a host of reasons, and this is definitely one of my absolute favorites. Despite being over five hundred and fifty years old, the right wing of the Melun Diptych is an extraordinarily “modern” work of art, a terrible cliché I usually avoid, but in this case find utterly unavoidable. It’s an exquisite study in geometry, from the perpendicular lines of the Virgin Mary’s marble-encrusted throne to the ovoid shape of her perfectly plucked head. And then there are the buoyant bodies of the red seraphim and blue cherubim (who incidentally have always reminded me, in the very best possible way, of juvenile versions of the Michelin Man as interpreted by Jeff Koons). The spheres, too, are remarkable, each as perfect as a little celestial orb—the angels’ heads, the iridescent pearls, and of course, the Virgin’s breasts. Impossibly spaced, one covered and the other bared to reveal its marble-like “flesh,” they are fantasy appendages for the Virgin in her otherworldly glory as Queen of Heaven. Although exposed to show its role as a source of sustenance for the Christ Child, the Virgin’s uncovered breast can hardly be mistaken for a real lactating breast. The intersection of divinity, woman and symbol takes a very memorable form here indeed, especially since tradition holds that Mary’s features were modelled on those of Agnes Sorel, mistress to King Charles VII… To conclude, I leave you with a passage from Clement Marot’s lengthy ode to the beautiful breast (“Blason du beau tetin”), first published in 1536: […] Breast that never moves, Neither to come, nor to go, Neither to run, nor to dance. On March 8th, the church family at First Church St Pete was greeted by a large flock of origami doves prominently displayed in the sanctuary, high above the balcony pews. The Art Collective, a committee under the leadership of Gina White, with help from many other volunteers, had completed the first part of an installation with intentions of adding more doves each week during Lent. Unfortunately after the first two weeks, and the introduction of COVID 19, all plans were put on hold. This project was inspired by German artist Michael Pendry’s art installation which has traveled to cathedrals all over the world. It was meant to be an interactive piece that incorporates hand-folded prayers or praises from the church congregation, a visual wave of hallelujahs! Certainly, this project will take on added meaning because of the uncertainty of events during Lent 2020.
