For my latest article I explore “The Violence of white and non-Black PoC Apologies.” Link in bio. . . . Many Black people will tell you that right now is apology season. Apologies are important but they can also be deeply emotionally violent. When one apologizes not to hear our pain but to distance oneself from feelings of white guilt, it constitutes an act is emotional violence or at the very least emotional carelessness. So I created an explainer for my latest article on a few things to consider before you apologize. Remember that apology and accountability go hand in hand. - @ciarra_milan on Instagram

The anti-racist protests around the world are a vital response to this countrys systemic, institutional, psychological, and cultural violence against Black people — a violence this country was shamefully built on. This movement is an essential action necessary for dismantling the institutionalized racism and systems of oppression woven into the fabric of this nation. Today, we were originally scheduled to announce the winners of the Circadian Pictures Creative Fund, but right now we must focus our energy & efforts elsewhere. It is time now to protest, to give, to learn/unlearn, to amplify Black voices, and to listen. To be clear, the contest is postponed for now, but not canceled. For updates on the contest and to access anti-racism educational resources & information, as well as places to donate, please visit the link in our bio. - @circadianpictures on Instagram

It’s Black history month in the U.K. and I refuse to re hash the same conversation and talk we have been saying, after the rubbles of Black squares and empty platitudes settle. We know we gotta be here all damn year, we been here.. So I will share something I had written for my column on metro from last year. As always, rooting for everybody Black (and Black queer and trans to the front) . “As a kid, Black History Month can sometimes feel like a time in school where you are hungry to learn. For once you see an authority figure (your teacher), giving information that includes people like you. So often the exchange of knowledge in schools is that a white person (your teacher), tells you important things that another white person (someone in history) did, and you (the non white person) listen. Although we often see Blackness and queerness as an axis of ‘multiple oppression’, what learning about our history enables us to do is to flip that lens. I refuse to believe that this does not have prolonged effects on how and who we view as carriers of knowledge. So when Black History Month comes along, or when a teacher decides to bring Blackness into a class, it is natural that the importance of who is featured and how the lessons are taught feels greater. But as it stands, when Blackness is involved, straightness and cisness is, too. What this does is create an ahistorical approach to our history. It does a disservice to the richness and complexities that Blackness holds. And I believe this great affects young Black LGBT+ people’s aspirations, possibilities and health. Statistics show that LGBT+ people of colour experience higher rates of mental health issues and discrimination than our white community members. It is clear to me that we must be tackling this from all sides – including our history. Whether that be talking about examples of gender non-conformity in precolonial African religions, or the genius writings of Black queer figures like James Baldwin or Alice Dunbar Nelson.....” 🖤🖤 - @travisalabanza on Instagram

I work for @facebook , a company whose mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. I cant say that I was surprised by the outpouring of love thrown my way these past few days by my smart, gifted and caring colleagues. What has been happening to people like me all over the world has left many of us heartbroken, but not defeated. I am hopeful for this situation to change at the systemic level, and willing to fight for it and support anyone accelerating that process. We will be heard, listened to, seen and respected. Like many Black employees, I expect more from our leadership in support of Black people and the issues we face everyday. Facebookʼs recent decision to not act on posts that incite violence ignores other options to keep our community safe. The policy pigeonholes us into addressing harmful user-facing content in two ways: keep content up or take it down. I believe that this is a self-imposed constraint and implore @zuck to revisit the solution. We have the opportunity to stand for free expression and actively be involved in the conversation. We can do better. We should do better. #takeaction #blacklivesmatter - @madsear on Instagram

At first I took offense and wanted to storm out but that’s too easy. As @commnthomas once said “You can’t blame them for only knowing one kinda black!” To his point, I quickly gain my barring and said “That would be a great collab, wouldn’t it?!”. Words from our owner @raphaelverela - “Together we stand in the face of racial divide this country has been diseased with. These are my brothers and we have all and will always be the example of what humanity should look like. . As a nation we must become bigger than we have been: more courageous, greater in spirit, larger in outlook. We must become members of a new race, overcome petty prejudice, owing our ultimate allegiance not to nations but to our fellow men within the human community. . What I’m not confused about is the world needing much more love, no hate, no prejudice, no bigotry and more unity, peace and understanding. Period.” . We hear you. We see you. We support you. A note to Black people: We have absolutely no responsibility for Trumps ascent to power. He is the fire-breathing dragon of whiteness creation. Whether it was their fear, their insecurity, their anger, their hate, their violence, their greed, their love, or their indifference, he is the sum total and inevitable result of centuries of their white supremacist capitalist patriarchal pathology. It is a pathology akin to that of the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs: Its very nature is annihilation and it cannot be dissuaded. Trump has, at once, nothing to do with us and everything to do with us. We did not create him, but he was created to do what his predecessors tried and failed to do: destroy us all. Use every tool at your disposal. Do not go down without a fight. - @thesonofbaldwin on Instagram

The Stonewall uprising, which Pride commemorates every year in June, was a protest against police brutality. Integral to this monumental event was transgender activist Marsha P. Johnson, founder of the Gay Liberation Front and cofounder alongside Sylvia Rivera of LGBTQ advocacy organization S.T.A.R. (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries). In the 80s, she worked with Act Up as an AIDS activist. Her body was found floating in the Hudson River in 1992. - @joost_vandebrug on Instagram

We stand with the Chicagoans, activist groups, courageous Black youth, and people throughout the nation protesting for justice for George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, the many Black lives lost, and systemic change. We lift up our Black scholar-artists, educators, staff, community members, and shout Black Lives Matter. • To our non-black community members, as allies it’s our responsibility to practice and evaluate anti-racism efforts every day. The work is not done here, and the work is certainly not done at ChiArts, but we will continue to put in the effort to make this world a place where our Black youth and people can thrive more than ever. • In our bio, we have linked a nationwide list of bail funds/legal help organizations to donate to, Educational Resources for White People, blackownedchicago.com, Chicago activist organizations to follow, and a link to free virtual therapy for Black youth from The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation. - @chiartshs on Instagram

Today is #NationalBlackVoterDay and I’m here to tell you: WE CAN SWING THIS VOTE—IF we all exercise our civic duty to rally our families, our friends, and our communities to make a voting plan NOW. The disenfranchisement we are witnessing today is part of a centuries-long history of Black folks being told that there is no room for us within civic discourse, at the polls or in the government. We saw that change in 2008 when the surge in Black voters nearly erased the racial gap. Black women turned out at a higher rate than any other racial, ethnic and gender group. Younger Black folks voted in greater proportions than whites for the first time. And as a result, WE elected our first Black President. TWICE over. We must show up again. As the late John Lewis said: “When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something. Our vote is our voice. Our vote is our power. Our vote matters. Let’s use it to make the change we need to see. HOW are YOU voting? By mail? In person? I wanna hear your voting game plan, fam! (Stats via @nytimes) - @elainewelteroth on Instagram

We believe in the power of your voice. The continued injustice and cruelty towards the Black community in America is undeniable and demands shouts for action. Over the next couple of days, we’ll be using our Instagram platform to share mental health resources for the Black community, as well as educational and activist tools in support of #BlackLivesMatter. Please look for these in our caption below and stories, which will be highlighted. Inside Journal will still very much be open for writing – as a place to hear your thoughts and feelings. We understand the complexity of emotions that are being felt at this time, and out the respect of this process we will not be sharing journal entries this week. To the cycling and outdoor community, In your fight to dismantle racism, please do not perpetuate the same sexism and misogyny that we have also been fighting to dismantle. It is truly beautiful to see so many brands and organizations re-sharing images of Black cyclists and outdoor folks. Keep it up! But if you aren’t also sharing imagery and stories of Black women, trans, and queer folks then why bother? Frankly, it’s insulting. The Black Lives Matter movement was started by 3 Black femmes. And so much of this movement has been carried on the backs of Black women who have gotten little to no recognition for their work. The majority of the work calling for greater representation in cycling and the outdoors has been done by women and queer folks. And the recent efforts to #DefundBikePolice have been led by Black and other Women and Queer folks of Color. Black womxn exist in these spaces too. So start acting like it. - @rachel.olzer on Instagram

We refuse to see this time any other way. Before the schools reopen, before the businesses reopen, before the rioting and protests stop. There will be a change. Systemically, physically, mentally and spiritually. We will not hide our anger and our true bitterness. This burden placed on all of us because of the nutrients in our skin will have to be lifted. According to the APM Research Lab, as of mid-September, “1 in 1,020 Black Americans has died (or 97.9 deaths per 100,000).” More than 200,000 Americans are confirmed dead from Covid-19, and a disproportionate number of them are Black. It’s that simple. (Biden’s statement that 1 in 500 could die by the end of the year without swift action would appear to reflect the estimates that the US death toll could grow to 400,000 by January 1.) There are several reasons why. Black Americans have disproportionately higher rates of preexisting conditions, including heart disease and cancer, which are associated with more deaths and hospitalizations from Covid-19. Black Americans are also more likely to work in jobs that are considered “essential,” which requires them to go into work and risk exposure to the coronavirus. Housing segregation has also led to Black Americans having less access to clean water and created many longstanding health disparities. Race, place, income, and health, as should be obvious by now, are inextricably linked. Via #vox #theblackbayarea - @theblackbayarea on Instagram

Who was a part of the Underground Railroad community? People of all races, genders, and ages participated in the Underground Railroad. Swipe to see a minute sample of Underground Railroad operatives, and share stories about your favorite Underground Railroad community members below! Image 1: Harriet Bell Hayden was born enslaved in Kentucky. Together with her son, Joseph, and husband, Lewis Hayden, she utilized the Underground Railroad, reclaiming her freedom and eventually settling in Boston, Massachusetts. Harriet and Lewis opened their home to fellow freedom seekers, eventually becoming some of the most well known Underground Railroad operatives and abolitionists in Boston. Ms. Ella Baker played a significant role in some of the most influential organizations of her time, including the NAACP and Martin Luther King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). She guided others with her powerful words, moving us towards a more just America. Her Grandmother spent her life under slavery, and her resilience in the face of racism and injustice inspired Ella throughout her life. With Ella Bakers guidance and encouragement, the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) became one of the foremost advocates for human rights in the America. Ella Baker’s influence was reflected in the nickname she acquired: Fundi, a Swahili word meaning a person who teaches a craft to the next generation. Baker continued to be a respected and influential leader in the fight for human and civil rights until her death. - @dcpofficial on Instagram

As co-founders of Mt. Mai ( @mt_mai ) and YHG ( @yhgdesign ), Kim and I have been blessed with talents that have allowed us to step out on our own and become entrepreneurs. Our success and growth would not be a reality without those who left the door open behind them; now we are doing our part to those who come after us. We are the direct result of opportunities created and payed forward by other Black and Brown trailblazers — it is now our turn to fulfill our duty in opening those same doors for the next generation of Black and Brown youth. We’ve decided to use the proximity of our birthdays (30 days apart) to do an annual give back program for our communities. This year we are fundraising money in partnership with The Black School ( @theblackschool ) — an experimental art school teaching radical Black history. Through mentorship, workshops, festivals, and youth engagement, TBS uses art to propose radical alternatives to the current systems of injustices. The fundraiser will run from today, my birthday 7/7 to Kim’s birthday 8/7. Our goal is to raise at least $3,000 within the next 30 days to help TBS reach their goal to furthering the futures of Black youth. We hope that you, our friends, family, and network will donate, repost, and spread the word to reach this goal. Click the #linkinbio to donate! 🖤 With Love, Ryan and Kim - @rstrinidad on Instagram

I think about at any point, at any time, I or my black girl friends, my black aunts, my black nana, my black mom, or any black woman could be taken out simply because of the color of our skin. That anyone who looks like me could be a Breonna Taylor anytime those in blue see fit. That my skin makes people uncomfortable and that makes me public enemy #1. That there is no place that is safe for me. Not even in my own bedroom. That our black lives continue to not matter. America does not have justice for people who look like me. I am tired, I am sad, I am angry but I am not defeated and I am not giving up. I still have faith but no longer in the system but in myself and my people who continue to fight for our place on this planet. We must continue to say her name and the many names of those lives we have lost to racism and police brutality. We must keep going. But as James Baldwin said it best, “You always told me it takes time. It has taken my fathers time, my mothers time. My uncles time. My brothers and sisters time. My nieces and my nephews time. How much time do you want for your...progress? Well your time is up. We can no longer afford to be on your time, as it has and is hazardous to our health. We are outraged by the continued murder and oppression of Black people and the inhumane police brutality perpetuated by a culture of violent white supremacy. We’ve been quiet as we take a hard look inward to identify racism and inequality within our own house. We commit to making the systemic, long-term changes that we know are critical. We have work to do, and we hold ourselves accountable for making a meaningful impact in the fight to dismantle racism, police brutality, and white supremacy.
