What does your TONGUE say about you?! 👅 In TCM, we use several diagnostic techniques when assessing a client’s health - some include visual markers, medical history, dietary and lifestyle habits, pulse, and tongue diagnosis. The tongue is an incredibly useful diagnostic tool and can reveal a LOT about a person’s health. Coming from a typically Western upbringing, I was naturally skeptical about the accuracy of tongue diagnosis when I started out having acupuncture around 5 years ago. I would go for acupuncture, a tui na massage, cupping or herbs, and test the doctor by asking him to do my pulse/tongue diagnosis before telling him any of my symptoms. 100% of the time the doctor was completely bang on and would tell me everything about my life history - which was where my interest in TCM began 💚 The tongue is divided into different sections that correspond to different organs/locations of the body, and can therefore act as a map when locating imbalances. Diagnosis is made based on the shape, texture, colour of the tongue, and the coating on the tongue’s surface. We examine whether there are teeth marks, cracks, red dots, the level of moisture on the tongue, and any other distinguishing features. These features can indicate how the gut is functioning, how you are sleeping, how much stress and energy you have, where you have dampness, heat, inflammation, to name a few. This has raised the question for many music buffs: do extra teeth equal extra vocal range? Though Freddie believed his “buck teeth” gave his voice it’s magic, scientists now believe his vocal power came from his ability to use and control his vestibular folds, a pair of mucous membranes located just above the vocal cords, known as “false vocal cords.” However, researchers are still unable to verify Mercury’s legendary four-octave range. It may just be a musical phenomenon – or like Freddie says, it’s a kind of magic! ✨ While Freddie Mercury was teased over his teeth growing up, he refused orthodontic treatments, unwilling to take the risk it may mess with his sound. This led him to grow his famous moustache and he was often seen speaking with his hand covering his mouth.
