Copper Mountain today was a highlight in my life. I have never been on the slopes before and seen 2 feet of powder covering even the green and blue runs. Photo story 1) Fremont Pass from Leadville was the only open road to Copper and the copious amounts dumping forebode an amazing day - if I could safely get there. 2) all the Dew Tour events for the day had to be canceled because there was just too much powder. 3) My new friend Kirsten arrived later in the day and I caught a photo with my phone after my DSLR died of her shredding the abundant gnar. 4). He is working on walking and is using a walker and some assistance, eating totally regular food all the time, doing three hours of therapies (OT, ST, PT) a day and making such great progress. Pearl Jam’s Yield - another chance to work with Brendan O’Brien and Nick on a PJ record. No complaints here. Tracked some demos before their arrival, per usual. This time two made the record, All Those Yesterday’s and the hidden track, Hummus. But a third made it on from a session after the record was done. Stone asked me to meet up with him at Litho to work on a couple of songs he wanted to pitch for inclusion on the record. His typical studio method was playing a drum beat, making a loop and then building the song on the loop. At that time we almost always used a micro cassette recorder to add so crunch time the tone. The song on Yield that came out of that session was Do The Evolution. Once we had a musical skeleton we sent a rough to Ed and he came in the next day to work on it. He had me do some tape edits to fine tune the arrangement and then he started singing. All I can say is some magic happened that day. It came together so easily. Ed wanted me to distort the vocal during the comping so I ran it through a tube compressor (LA-2A) as I comped. Thereby locking in the tone you hear on the final mix. We did the “hallelujah” vocals stacks, added the organ, had Mike come in and lay down some Mike on the track and Stone put some placeholder bass down. A copy of the 2” tape was sent to Jack for him to overdub drums, the bass was redone, and then it was added to the record after mixing. Fun fact: In the “admire me, admire my home” section you can hear clanking intermittently through the part. That is Ed hitting the music stand with his pencil as he was singing. It just so happened that those vocals were the ones we wanted to use. The distortion of the compressor brought out something amazing in the clank, so we rolled with it. [ AUTOMNE-HIVER is the new PRINTEMPS-ETE ] Et voilà : un mois de plus de confinement. Cette situation inédite à laube de louverture de la saison des mariages est, vous vous en doutez, un coup dur. Mais je nai pas envie dentretenir ce discours dramatique. Cest compliqué pour les futurs mariés, cest la cata pour les prestataires, cest un fait. On ne va pas revenir dessus 50 ans, et cest pour cela que je ne me suis pas exprimée avant. Le prolongement de ce confinement et les potentielles prochaines mesures mont amené à me poser une question simple. Quest ce jai envie de nourrir ? Lénergie du désespoir, de lagacement, du retour rapide à la normale quitte à ce que tout le monde prenne des risques inutiles ? Ou une énergie positive qui essaie de trouver ou du moins, de proposer des solutions pour que tout le monde y trouve un peu son compte ? Bien sûr, jai mes coups de mou, de doute, même de colère face à tout ça. Mais je me rends bien compte quà part me rendre malade, cela ne me sert à rien. Alors plutôt que de gaspiller mon énergie en réactions dans le vent, je vais tâcher davoir des actions concrètes et utiles à mon échelle. Ca fait 10 ans que je fais des mariages, de toutes cultures, de toutes confessions, de toutes tailles, de tous budgets. Donc je pourrai peut être mettre à profit cette expérience en donnant quelques conseils de terrain aux futurs mariés. Ceux de 2020 qui galèrent à re-organiser leur mariage, mais aussi ceux à venir, qui cloitrés chez eux, se mettent à rêver de grandes fêtes avec la famille et les amis. Je commence aujourdhui en vous parlant des mariages en automne ou en hiver, et en vous expliquant pourquoi ils présentent certains avantages par rapport aux mariages printaniers et estivaux. In the pre-digital era, when hard-fought assignments were one ill-chosen f-stop from inadequacy, few mountain bike photographers were as consistently fearless as Wilde, whose inimitable eye and appetite for radical experimentation put him in a league of his own. Exposing negatives to shroud his subjects in the moods he was feeling was only the beginning for Wilde. Next came the darkroom, where his penchant for perilous experimentation—a potentially disastrous risk in the pre-digital era—would be satiated. Here, all sorts of alternative development methods were in the offing: Cross-processing, bleaching/selenium toning and even the bending and scratching of negatives would be employed to realize his desired effects. “It was risky for sure,” the great Sterling Lorence says of Wilde’s methods. “It was at the beginning of my years as a photographer, and what he was doing was so artistically unique in mountain bike photography. I remember thinking it was intimidating that the rest of us would have to compete against something like that. Als ein Zeppelin über das Walberla flog Update: Die Archivleiterin des Zeppelin-Museums vermutet, dass das Luftschiff auf dem Foto Graf Zeppelin ist. In der monatlichen FT Forchheim-Rubrik „Aus dem Forchheimer Tagblatt vor 90 Jahren“ – zusammengestellt vom Forchheimer Stadtarchivar Rainer Kestler – war am 1. September 2020 zu lesen, dass 1930 ein Luftschiff („Graf Zeppelin“) über dem Walberla war. Im Fotoalbum seiner Schwiegermutter Gretl Kroder hat unser Leser Roland Kaplan in diesem Zusammenhang ein interessantes Foto entdeckt. Beschriftet ist es mit: „1936 Walberlafest – Luftschiff Hindenburg“. Bekannt ist, dass das Bild von einem Gast der Wandergruppe „Edelweiß Fürth“, die seit vielen Jahrzehnten die Gastwirtschaft Kroder in Schlaifhausen besuchte, damals bei einer Wanderung gemacht und der Wirtin gegeben wurde. Kaplans Schwiegermutter hat dann später die Notiz hinzugefügt. In Gesprächen habe sie die Echtheit des Ereignisses bestätigt. Bei der 650-Jahr-Feier des Dorfes (2012) wurde das Bild in einer Ausstellung gezeigt, wobei sich ältere Personen daran erinnern konnten. 📸 Archiv Roland Kaplan Der Zeppelin LZ 129 „Hindenburg“ war neben seinem Schwesterluftschiff LZ 130 eines der beiden größten jemals gebauten Luftfahrzeuge. Am 6. Mai 1937 wurde er bei der Landung in Lakehurst (New Jersey, USA) zerstört, als sich die Wasserstofffüllung entzündete. 35 der 97 Menschen an Bord sowie ein Mitglied der Bodenmannschaft kamen ums Leben. ‘Slow Down’ - a small silkscreen print has turned up at auction in NZ @artandobject Art+Object, New Collectors Art , Auckland, 24-Sep-20 These prints were handed out free at the opening of the Hume Highway Project in 2010 @melbourneartfair. They were slipped inside a small book, an edition of 100 @tolarno had produced to coincide with the project (swipe thru). ONLINE TALK Zaido: Documenting a 1,300 year old ceremony Saturday 10 October 2020 - 11:00am Following a series of tragedies including the unexpected death of her father and her own critical accident, photographer Yukari Chikura set off on a restorative pilgrimage to document a 1,300-year-old ceremony, known locally as Zaido. The images from her pilgrimage were recently published in Yukari’s book, Zaido, and in this special talk, Yukari will share behind the scenes insights into the stories captured in her incredible photographs, including an exclusive chance to look at images not featured in the book. Dainichido Bugaku, locally known as Zaido, is an annual ritual performance, which has been passed down from generation to generation since the early 8th century in Kazuno district, Akita prefecture. On the second day of the year, the people of 4 local communities set off from dedicated sites to the Hachimantai shrine where they perform nine sacred dances from dawn to noon as a prayer for happiness in the New Year. Some are performed with masks, some are performed by children, reflecting variations amongst the four groups. The practice strengthens the sense of belonging in these communities, both by participating and by observing the tradition each year.
