Michigan maps update! On Tuesday 9/15/2020 we published an additional round of updates to the Michigan Maps Series. This map series was last updated on 7/15/2020. This recent update was precipitated by a trail access issue that arose on a new section of trail featured in the July updates. Because this issue required an immediate adjustment to the route, were releasing updated maps sooner than we normally would. This provided an opportunity to include a few other reroutes, mostly minor in the Northern Lower Peninsula and Manistee National Forest. • However, this round of updates includes a substantial reroute which moved the NCT off of Echo Drive near White Cloud, MI creating just over 3 miles of new off-road trail completed by the Western Michigan Chapter! • Michigan Regional Trail Coordinator, Kenny Wawsczyk, says This whole new section is really cool. Lots of different landscapes you go through, they did a really good job. The Other is most often a threatening figure, particularly in cultural contexts that have developed around tension, violence, and traumas. As a result, our neurobiological and socially conditioned defensive mechanisms have become finely honed to attack and destroy, to discipline and punish. Leaning into empathy, and therefore deeper and more complex understanding of the other requires a base amount of safety, compassion, and most of all curiosity - the desire to know why. The skills of feeling into safety, curiosity, and compassion have not been encouraged in contemporary activist culture. A powerful rhetoric around attack, conversion, and rescuing has been developed - and in some cases, repurposed from older religious and ethical traditions - that serves our basic instincts for self-preservation. This rhetoric, while useful in situations requiring decisive action toward self-defense, can also entrap us and prevent us from expanding our capacity for inquiry and our tolerance for difference and transgression. The narrow lens of understanding the Other as Enemy, as Problem, and as Victim, offers us some simple answers and is therefore appealing. The much wider and more ambiguous lens on the Other as a whole human being, or even more frightening, as sacred kin, can be terrifying to our sense of self. Why should we extend our curiosity and compassion to those who have harmed and dehumanized us? In the first place, I believe that there is an essential element of our own dignity and person-hood that can be reclaimed in an attempt to understand the Other. It is intuitive that safety enables empathy, but perhaps the reverse can also be true, that safety follows empathy. Furthermore, a worldview dominated by suspicion of the Other gives rise to an expanding definition of Other - we begin to see the frightening Enemy in those we hold dear. Our world shrinks and becomes an ever more frightening place. Yet when we learn see kinship in even the most terrifying enemy, our world grows and the possibility of freedom becomes clearer. - @kaichengthom on Instagram

I basically spend the first 3-4 hours of each day with my kids at Redwood Regional Park. Its hard to leave behind my job and focus all of my energy on caring for two toddlers, but its also sometimes nearly euphoric being there with them in such natural beauty and laughing and telling stories as we picnic in the trees and flowers. The Federal Court placed an injunction on developer ozyhomes from clearing 20 hectares of bushland, citing that the corridor had become a refuge for native animals after the summer bushfires. Today City Attorney Herrera filed civil lawsuits against 28 known drug dealers in the Tenderloin to combat the open-air drug dealing that is plaguing the neighborhood. San Francisco is experiencing an opioid epidemic, and this year weve already had 81 drug overdose deaths in the Tenderloin alone. The injunctions filed today target specific dealers who come from around the Bay Area to sell hard drugs like cocaine, fentanyl and heroin to San Francisco residents. The lawsuits would prohibit them from entering the Tenderloin. Violations would have civil and criminal consequences. While this step is not a silver bullet to fix this problem entirely, it gives law enforcement officers another tool to keep Tenderloin residents safe. August 17, 2020, the Walbridge, Stewarts, and Meyers fires ignited in northwest Sonoma County. Our hearts go out to our community members who have lost their homes or have been displaced by the fires. Many of our protected lands have been affected by fire in the last few years, and this year is no different. As we wait for the incredible firefighters and first responders to fully contain these fires, we are busy prepping to support landowners and the county at-large in recovery. The lands we protect provide local food, clean drinking water, increased biodiversity, and natural beauty everyday. During wildfires, floods, and other extreme events, our working and natural lands provide additional support as buffers around our communities. As always, we are committed to continuing to manage our lands to ensure ecosystem health that helps reduce the risk and intensity of wildfires, and we work with easement landowners to support them in doing the same. Thankfully, our lands will also be there to provide a place where we can all feel calm and restored in the days and weeks ahead. There’s no denying it, the last few years, and particularly the last several months, have been difficult for us all. But we feel lucky to be part of a community that cares so deeply for one another, and for the lands upon which we all live, work, learn, grow, explore, and heal. Thousands of copies of this infographic are being printed and getting into the hands of the 35,000-40,000 farmworkers in Ventura County who consistently help put food on our tables in spite of the rain, heat, fires, and now—COVID-19.
