Today, I wear grey in May for myself. May 30, 2012, i was diagnosed with a brain tumor. September 5, 2012 I went through a 16 hour surgery to get it removed. Supposed to be in the hospital for at least a month. September 8, 2012 I went home and began in class schooling again a week later. Last sappy post/content dump I promise...2019 was a glow-up year for me and its honestly kind of surreal to be able to look back on a year and have so many moments stand out. On the fourth of January I started HRT and began to transition and after a few months of the emotional rollercoaster ride that follows when you fuck with your hormones I really managed to hit a groove. Im so glad I didnt choose to leave Chicago for the Pacific Northwest like I originally planned because for the first time since moving here ~5 years ago I feel grounded and like Im a part of an amazing community. Im thankful for all of the people who I have connected with over the past year and am so excited to continue to build relationships with all of you in the years to come. ⁣ ⁣ In the past year I: ⁣ - Raced bikes for the first time. Story time- This morning I woke up to go to my first day of work in almost a year. I was so excited and was running 30 minutes early. BOOM. I got rear ended. My sweet Dylan came to pick me up. While we waited for the police report and my car to be towed... When we went to drive away, Dylan’s car battery died. We were then stranded on the side of the 101 for almost two hours and KING @jakeaustinwalker came to save the day. Oh sad day, the jumper cables were too short and him being the king that he is went to go find longer ones until a lovely highway worker stopped and jumped dyl’s car for free and I was only four hours late to work 😀😀😀 Moral of the story, please PLEASE be mindful when you drive, tell everyone you love them- even at the end of an argument, don’t take a single second of life for granted, and Brec rocks a black eye. I have laugh lines like my mom, in highschool I was embarrassed by them, honestly looking back I don’t even know why. And I’m convinced I’ll have bags under my eyes forever. And my crows feet are coming in strong. And it’s hard for me to wear eyeshadow because of my hooded eye lids which I get from my dad. Isn’t it terrible that when we see a photo of ourselves that’s what we think of? Not “my laugh lines are a testimant to how much I am able to smile in laugh in life” or “hooded eyelids? Who cares I don’t wear makeup anyways” or all around “I feel so lucky to share such beautiful features with my parents who I love dearly and feel so blessed to look like such beautiful people, inside and out”. We spend WAY too much time criticizing ourselves and the way we look when ultimately everything on our face just shows what we’ve been through in life, the good and the bad. Seeing a photo of yourself and not judging your appearance is hard with the way society has raised us and ‘social norms’ that we are taught at such a young age are constantly being shoved in our faces through media. So let’s try to start embracing it. To start off I love my eye colour, not just because it’s unique but because I share the colour with my grandfather and that means I get to carry a piece of him with me forever. And I love the dimple on my left cheek because my sister has the same one and it only comes out when we really smile or laugh 😁 Let’s embrace our flaws and remember that we are beautiful people regardless of what we look like! Have you ever felt like God was unashamedly coming after you? »« «» »« How many times is God chasing us down and we’re too busy to even notice? It makes me think of the times when a coworker has had headphones in and someone tries to get their attention by waving their arms. Did you know God gets great joy from giving you divine wisdom? (Prov 2) How often do you and I just block out everything around us and hyper focus, missing out on the bigger picture? Now don’t get me wrong- focus, determination, steadfastness are all great things but they’re a means to the end, not the end itself. It’s easy to get stuck on an old thing God was doing and to hold on to it so tightly that you can’t see the new thing God is bringing (Isa 43:19). For me, God is doing a new thing. Who the heck knows what it is? I certainly don’t. So often I’ve been guided just one step at a time- a small prompting from the Spirit “hey, look over here” or “that’s a good thing, but is it the best?”. Sometimes, it’s checks and balances I’ve had to put on myself “is this going to help me become the person I want to become in Jesus?” Or “what would Jesus do if he were a multi-ethnic women in her 20s living in Cleveland?” So what are some of the promptings I’ve been getting from God? » be satisfied with what is in front of you » remember what you have prayed for » remember the promises I’ve spoken over you » more things won’t satisfy you » your ideas aren’t always the best ideas » appreciate this season of life » speak out I’m not sure what exactly this new thing God is doing. And I’m not sure why God is doing it. But in reality, that’s not my job. My job is to love- love God and love people. So whatever God is doing, I know it’s going to lead me to loving in a deeper way. Drifting among ice in the Arctic, Scripps PhD student Emelia Chamberlain made her first visit to the North Pole! Chamberlain is part of @mosaic_expedition, the largest polar expedition ever, in which researchers from 20 countries are spending stints on an icebreaker that will be trapped in sea ice for a year. Chamberlain is interested in the microscopic organisms that live underneath the ice and breathe the same way we do, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide. Characterizing the structure of those communities will help us understand whether the Arctic is creating more carbon dioxide overall or the opposite. Today we have the privilege, no, the HONOR of highlighting the multitalented-milly-rocking queen herself, Miss Corrina Daskalakis 👑 show her some love! 🔥🔥🔥 . . . “Growing up, I was told repeatedly that dance was a girly thing. I entered my local dance school at a young age and dedicated my life to it. My family always called me the dancer but it always felt weird, like I was the stereotype little girl who got put in ballet classes. I thought this way partially because I considered myself a tomboy, so I felt I needed to be a bit rebellious. And I idolized my older sister who was the epitome of a tough, female athlete who practiced all kinds of sports and karate. Everyone in my family was so amazed by her that I felt I needed to do more and work harder. But when I told them I dance, it was a more cutesy reaction and wasnt taken as seriously. Fast forward X amount of years and I just joined the urban dance community. At first, I was extremely thrilled with the amount of males I seen dancing. It proved to me that dance wasnt just a girl thing. However, over the years, I noticed some disparities that til much recently, I disregarded. Then, it felt like I had to prove myself. That I could do more than dance in a rather feminine styles. Even though my experience in hip hop began in krump...I realized just how male-dominated the community is. In my experience, whenever I heard talk of well-known dancers from the west coast, males would be considered role models to male dancers here while females who are known for hard hitting, buck pieces would get called hot or thatll be the reason why male dancers as were in love with them...though intended as a compliment, I couldnt help but feel some type of way. Trump is trashing the Constitution to stay in power and steal the election. ⠀ Before there was a United States of America, there was a postal system. Revolutionaries like Samuel Adams and Thomas Jefferson hatched their plans using underground postal networks known as committees of correspondence. In 1775, a year before the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress created the Post Office Department and named Benjamin Franklin the first postmaster general.⠀ ⠀ American democracy expanded with the postal system, one of the only institutions that bound the new nation together and aimed to serve the many rather than the few.⠀ ⠀ There’s a reason why the USPS remains the most popular government institution, with a 91 percent approval rating. At a time of widening inequality, it costs the same amount to mail a domestic letter no matter where you live. Even in the digital age, the mail remains essential for businesses to serve customers, for seniors and veterans to receive medicine, and for Americans of all stripes to get pandemic supplies like masks—and cast their ballots.⠀ ⠀ But no president before Trump has ever sought to sabotage the institution’s workings to win reelection.⠀ ⠀ Nor has any president installed a postmaster general like Louis DeJoy, the GOP megadonor who in record time instituted a dizzying array of changes—eliminating overtime, displacing 23 top executives, reducing post office hours—that seem designed to further the GOP’s long-term goal of privatizing the post office and its short-term goal of suppressing mail-in votes cast by Democrats.⠀ ⠀ Trump’s effort to corrupt core institutions for the benefit of his ruling clique bears an eerie resemblance to the slide toward authoritarianism in other countries.⠀ ⠀ The postal service is a central function of the Constitution and free and fair elections and the peaceful transfer of power are the bedrock principles that define it. We had over 140 volunteers, collected 38bags rubbish weighing in at 325kgs, 5000 cigarette butts, 116 coffee cups, 112 plastic bottles, 147 takeaway cups, 75 plastic bags, 182 plastic straws, 43 pieces of cutlery , 73 soft plastic packaging , 113 cans and hundreds of micro plastic pieces. The @peloton_against_plastic_ did an amazing job with their volunteers at Hill 60 in Port Kembla as well as the @wollongongfreedivers who hit the harbour floor! Well, this is 28. It’s not at all the year I was envisioning, but I’ve learned a heck of a lot. About resilience, about making hard choices, about trusting your gut, and most importantly, about the people you can turn to when you’re having a rough go of it. I have been sad, i have been angry, I have been excited and inspired. I have spent the day in bed, under the covers, hiding from the world. I’ve spent the day protesting, calling, writing letters, taking bike rides, reading in my favorite spot in the park, walking the city at its emptiest in April, and as the trickle of returning residents begins to fill it up again. As this next year of my life progresses, I want to attack it with the same forward thinking attitude that got me through this one, but take more time to appreciate the little things. I am lucky. I have my family, my health, my friends, and exciting new ideas and opportunities that, five years ago, when I got off the plane here in NYC, I would never have imagined. Know that my biggest birthday wish is to give you all a big bear hug, and pack a dive bar full to toast to another turn around the sun, but we’ll have to save that for another time.
