One time in college, I went out walking in the hills with a friend of mine. At some point as we meandered through the woods, the What-Are-You-Going-To-Do-To-Change-The-World conversation came up. . No one can change the world, my friend said. There are billions of people & half of them are doing the exact opposite thing youre doing. Its why the world pretty much stays the same. . He had a very mathematic view of the world. Elegant. Seamless. Clean. Structured. Which made sense, since he was a mathematician. For him, it was as simple as that. Do the thing you do & let other people do the thing they do... . He wasnt going to fix people, or help them, or point out where they could do things better. I see now that hed come to understand what can take a very long time to learn: that most people dont want to be fixed, or helped as if theyre incapable. Were all incredibly capable & sometimes, circumstances are just too much. Circumstances like money & health & bad luck & systems that decide who gets access based on color & gender & what you believe & who you love... . The curious thing to me now, years later, is seeing almost no circumstance is too much for a larger community, or the world itself. Were watching it happen & making it happen in real time right now. Which means, in all likelihood, it was never too much... . Perhaps its why the Bhodhisattvas make a vow to return for as many lifetimes as it takes for all beings to be free of suffering. Not because they think that they alone will be able to change the world & free us all. But that they may be that one more pair of hands at the right time to help move someone, or a group of someones, a little bit closer to who they want to be... .
