Something that I realized only by sitting with and learning from other real scholars is that there is an adab- mannerism/etiquette-that is engrained in our deen. Islam is not just a set of rules, yeses and no’s, halal or haraams. I’ll never forget going to masjid Sabireen, and seeing Cham Muslim women put on a prayer hijab and skirt OVER the hijab and skirt they were all wearing- out of Adab towards Allah Swt and respect for prayer. Some might think thats a bit too much. But is it possible to ever have too much adab with Allah Swt, our Master? . Our beautiful Hajjar (as) was an example of this as well. She knew that being left in the desert with her infant was a command from Allah Swt, so in her conviction she (as) accepted her fate knowing with certainty that He Swt would not leave her (as) stranded. All she (as) had to do was wait. So why run between Safaa and Marwa? Why exert herself by running up hills in the scorching hot Arabian desert heat? Because she wanted to show Allah Swt that she (as) put in some effort out of adab towards Him Swt. After she (as) put in her effort Allah Swt granted her the well of Zamzam and an entire caravan of ppl. . Our adab in regards to the way we worship, the effort we put in is what differentiates us in front of Allah Swt, it will be what raises our ranks in front of Allah Swt. It will be the first thing our children see when they learn how to be Muslim. I’ve been distracting myself these last few weeks, as ‘the’ looming meeting I have tomorrow with an ex employer finally sees the light. I’ve been on the fence as to whether or not to share this story, but I‘ve concluded that by telling my story it might just open up a dialogue for others to share. Almost two decades in the industry, I’ve seen the beauty and the ugliness that many won’t feel comfortable discussing. Let’s face it, the fashion industry is dirty. We work in a highly charged environment that pushes and challenges us. With tight deadlines and the relentless pressure to deliver the best and look our best. We forget to check in with ourselves. Before we know it we begin to question the value and quality of our own work. Mental health is a huge issue that needs to be re-evaluated, and taken very seriously in the workplace. I’ve seen and experienced first hand the effects when people are not being heard. I’m so grateful for the gift of time to reassess some of my life goals during my absence of leave. The scariest part was my fear of the uncertainty and of the unknown. However that fear ultimately has lead me to the here and now - TextileSeekers and my personal goal towards preserving indigenous craftsmanship. By far the greatest lesson that I’ve learnt? Bilkis, an 82-year old Indian grandmother, is on TIME magazines’s list of 100 “Most Influential People of 2020.” Times profile of Bilkis, who is popularly called Dadi (Hindi for grandmother), is written by Indian journalist and author Rana Ayyub who describes her as the voice of the marginalised. Bilkis gave hope and strength to activists and student leaders who were being thrown behind bars for standing up for the unpopular truth in a democracy that was sliding into authoritarianism and inspired peaceful copycat protests across the country, Ms Ayyub writes. The Muslim locality, Shaheen Bagh - where a long-running peaceful protest against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) took place - captured the imagination of many Indians. Muslim women came out in large numbers and peacefully protested, although many others from different religions sat alongside them in solidarity. The women read each other the preamble of Indias constitution, made speeches reaffirming their citizenship and sang patriotic songs. Yesterday I met an inspiring woman who asked me to produce a portrait film about her. She lives here in Mallorca and helps people with spiritual guidance. We sat in a charming restaurant by the water to talk about the project. Our table was situated in the shadow and we had the perfect soft breeze. It felt very peaceful and natural. Almost perfect. We talked about our lives. Her 18 year old son is a very talented artist. When hes asked wether he is a painter, his usually response is this: „I express how I feel with art and this can be a painting, a photograph, a text or a sculpture....“ I really like this. We often define who we are to soon to have other people put us in a box. I am not a photographer. I feel this, it fulfils me deeply but I am not that. I express myself through this channel right now.
