It was a Monday night but still plenty of reason to celebrate. Some of our best friends had just returned home after getting married this weekend and our good friend was in town from the west coast. Had to bring out some special wines for the occasion: 2002 Dom Pérignon (Magnum) 2003 Sine Qua Non Pinot Noir Omega 2004 Thomas Pinot Noir Dundee Hills 2014 Next of Kyn Syrah No. 8 Cumulus Vineyard (Magnum) 1997 Gaja Langhe Conteisa For me, the ’03 SQN Omega and ’14 Next of Kyn were the highlights of the night. The Omega is in great shape for a 17 year old Pinot and just has such a unique taste. The ’04 Thomas decanted for 2 hours and could have used another 2. Still pretty damn great. @sodhanivineyards / 2016 / Cabernet Sauvignon / Reserve / This wine has been on our radar for quite some time, and we’re glad to finally have given it a shot. It should be noted that most young wines we drink across 2-3 days just to see the evolution, and this one was really worth the patience. Notes of black currant red/red cherry, raspberry, oak spice, currant, sweet tobacco, blueberries, cassis, baking spice, and cocoa. The differences between day 1 and day 2 were really quite incredible. Day 1 was a wine that showed a very clean and focused expression of fruit, the oak barely just a whisper while the fruit leaned more towards red than black and an incredible acidity that kept the wine fresh. It was a bit tight, but the structure was linear and precise. We put the cork back on about half-way after 2-3 hours or so and came back to it next evening. Day 2 was a whole different wine, the aromatics exploded and the fruit was darker and lush. Smooth textured tannins, finesse on the palate and decadence. Really a transformative wine that requires absolute patience. Try a glass and let it decant for 6-8 hours, if you can wait until the next day...even better! Château Haut-Brion 1997 🍷 . Big name... small vintage... you know where this is going right ? In a blind tasting I would have probably said 1999. The 1997 Bordeaux are definitely underrated and they consequently represent great deals. The nose shows depth, freshness and complexity. A bit earthy. The attack is sweet and the wine is very well balanced. The structure is very elegant and definitely classic Haut-Brion in my book. The only thing that could indicate that it is not a great vintage could be a little lack of freshness in the final to elevate a bit this dark fruits mid palate. Great bottle anyway. 🥂🍷I RAMPLJUSET 🍷🥂 🏞 Vingården Boschkloof köptes 1995 av familjen Borman, och namngavs efter den naturliga ravinen (kloof på tyska) på gården. Från början styrdes gården av pappa Jacques Borman, men numera har ägorna överlåtits till sonen, tillika en av Sydafrikas mest lovande unga vinproducenter, Reenen Borman. 🍇 Jorden på gården består mestadels av sönderdelad granit och kaffeklipp. Från början odlades mestadels Riesling på fälten, men numera hittas här istället druvor som Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon och Chardonnay. 🇿🇦 Gården, som är på 25 hektar, grundades ursprungligen 1679 av kommendör Simon van der Stell som en ny bosättning för de holländska kolonisterna vid Godahoppsudden. The ’14 Eisele was brilliant especially after another hour in the glass. The ’17 SQN is special, ready to drink now but will also hold onto some bottles for a few more years. Tom brought a white wine for us to start the day with, a ’17 Quintarelli Bianco Secco Ca del Merlo- was my first time drinking Quintarelli white wine and really enjoyed. Had a great Beaujolais mini-class last night by @winefornormalpeople. I really enjoyed both wines, but they were so different. It was very interesting exploring Villages v. Cru. The Villages had that classic carbonic maceration candy-like flavor while the Cru was more like a Pinot Noir with good depth and body. I tried a new tactic while attending this class. I had the Atlas of Wine handy and used it to reference different areas on the map. This Albert Bichot Clos Frantin 2013 Echezeaux Grand Cru is a standout wine from the Vosne-Romanee village in Burgundy, France. This wine is 100% Pinot Noir, oaked for 16 months in predominantly new French Oak before release. This wine comes form the single hectare “Champs Traversins” vineyard within the Flagey-Echezeaux commune and the average age of the vines is an impressive 35 years old. The nose is delicately rich yet ethereal and fresh. Light peony and hibiscus aromas line the initial nose, with layers of fresh pomegranate, strawberries, cherries and cranberries showing shortly after. Ses yeux ont gagné quelques cernes pendant le confinement, mais Alaric de Portal peut sourire malgré la crise. Avec son équipe du site @ventealapropriete , il fait partie de ceux qui ont donné un sacré coup de main au vignoble pendant le Covid. En effet, tandis que restaurants et hôtels fermaient, tandis que les US et l’Asie stoppaient leurs achats de vin, le site ventealapropriété a continué de remplir les caves des particuliers, sauvant à la fois l’activité de nombreux vignerons et les Français d’une épreuve supplémentaire : la soif. Mais il a fallu se démultiplier ! À Mâcon, siège de l’entrepôt logistique, les expéditions ont bondi de 1000 à 3000 colis par jour. Coincés chez eux, les Français activaient le tire-bouchon. Encore fallait-il être capable de répondre à la flambée de la demande. Entre la nécessaire protection des salariés qui n’ont jamais cessé de travailler à Mâcon, les transporteurs complètement débordés, les grandes maisons qui avaient tiré le rideau pour motif sanitaire, il a fallu gérer… Coincés chez eux à Paris, Alaric et sa femme n’ont pas tergiversé, faisant basculer le foyer au rythme des 3x8 : boulot, leçons aux trois jeunes enfants de 8, 6 et 3 ans, puis encore boulot : les journées démarraient à 06h00 et se terminaient à 2h00 du matin. Mais le résultat est là : ventealapropriete.com distribue aujourd’hui les vins de 500 vignerons triés sur le volet et compte vendre 2,5 millions de bouteilles en 2020. Del Nonno 2018 Coda di volpe 100% @aziendaagricoladellangelo H ποικιλία Coda di Volpe (Ουρά της Αλεπούς – έχει αυτό το όνομα εξαιτίας της μορφής του τσαμπιού που μοιάζει με Ουρά Αλεπούς) είναι γνωστό ότι καλλιεργείται κυρίως στο Tufo και στους υπόλοιπους 7 δήμους της DOCG. Η νομοθεσία επιτρέπει στην παραγωγή του Greco di Tufo την χρήση της ποικιλίας σε μέγιστο βαθμό 15% (τουλάχιστον στα χαρτιά, γιατί σήμερα όλοι οι παραγωγοί παράγουν τα κρασιά τους με 100% σταφύλια από την ποικιλία Γκρέκο). Η ποικιλία Coda di Volpe χρησίμευε για τον μετριασμό της έντονης οξύτητας που έχει το Γκρέκο. Μέχρι πριν λίγα χρόνια, η περιοχή με τα αμπέλια που βρίσκονται στο Tufo με τα πλούσια κοιτάσματα θείου, είχε σχεδόν μηδενιστεί, γιατί στα χρόνια του μπουμ με τα κρασιά από το Τούφο κανένα από τα μεγάλα οινοποιεία δεν ήταν πρόθυμο να πληρώσει την ίδια τιμή με το Γκρέκο, για τον λόγο αυτό η παραγωγή της σχεδόν μηδενίστηκε. Το 2014 ο Angelo Muto αναφύτεψε περίπου 3 στρέμματα σε ένα μικρό οικόπεδο που ανήκε στον παππού του (Nonno Angelo από εκεί και το όνομα της ετικέτας) στην τοποθεσία του Σαν Μάρκο. Λόγω του παγετού του 2016, έπρεπε να περιμένει τη συγκομιδή του 2017 για να έχει τα πρώτα τσαμπιά, ενώ από την συγκομιδή του 2018 κυκλοφόρησαν και τα πρώτα μπουκάλια. Το δόγμα της οινοποίησης δεν διαφέρει πολύ από αυτό που εμπνέει την παραγωγή τόσο του greco di Tufo Miniere όσο και του Torrefavale, η οποία προβλέπει 12 μήνες παραμονή στις οινολάσπες. 400th post, worth some special bottles and a latergram... Pierre Ponnelle Charmes Chambertin 1959 from great provenance is healthy and showing nicely. However I think our last bottle in La Paulee Hong Kong was in better state. The length and energy was great for that bottle. It’s part of the learning from old bottles, and always a blessing to have them standing firm and well. Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet 2004 was healthy (sweat). Missing the restaurants badly, and missing speaking about wine. So let’s speak about Sherry. This bottle of @equiponavazos Manzanilla Pasada “Bota NO” 83 has been open in the fridge for about a month with little sips taken here and there. Behaving more like an Amontillado in character rather than a Fino (the “pasada” indicates that the biological aging ended), the oxidative notes gained freshness being open for a while, as well as umami-like complexity. The Sanlúcar salinity that was there to begin with, always kept this refreshing. Worked well with mushroom pasta as well as mature gruyère cheese, this made for a nice evening in such uncertain times. Jesús Barquín and Eduardo Ojeda have been doing amazing work with Bodegas in the region and pick the best barrels that have been sitting for years. ▪️Producer: Dominio de Pingus / @petersisseck ▪️ . ▪️Flor de Pingus 2004▪️ . 🍇: Tempranillo . 👀: dark red . 👃🏼: dark berry liquor, coffee, dark chocolate, spices . 💶: 180€ . Points: 93 . Rating: Dominio de Pingus is a rather young wineyard established by Peter Sisseck in 1995 and directly grew fame thanks to Robert Parker. Quickly the prices rose as the production is very limited. In general, around 500 cases of Pingus are made and around 4000 of Flor de Pingus which is only produced with rented vines from other wineries such as @fincavillacreces. One of the newest projects from Sisseck is PSI which unites various producers with the goal to save old Tempranillo vines. He works according to biodynamical standards and his vineyards were never treated with pesticides which was the reason why he bought them. The second wine for the Tempranillo flight was the Flor de Pingus and basically originates from the vineyards of @fincavillacreces. The average vine age is around 35 years and worked completely biodynamical. I also decided not to decant this bottle and simply open it in advance as well as to cool it down. We paired it with two different cuts of Iberico pork and some pan seared pulpo which went excellent with both wines. I had the impression that the bouquet of the Flor de Pingus offered a bit more of tertiary aromas such as truffle, tobacco and leather but also the same fruitiness and spiciness. Other aromas were dark berry liquor, coffee and dark chocolate. On the palate this wine is still very powerful and shows lots of ripe fruit causing a certain sweetness which probably not everyone would like. Uma temporada maravilhosa, com muitas visitas, propriedades e vinhos provados. Agendamos a Casanova di Neri e quando chegamos a pessoa que estava na recepção me pediu desculpas logo de cara e disse que estavam sem pessoal por causa das festas de final de ano. Ela perguntou se teria algum problema sermos atendidos pelo “Signore Giacomo”. Fiquei perplexo e disse imediatamente “pelo Giacomo, o dono 😱? O Giacomo di Neri”? A resposta foi sim óbvio 😁😁, o coração bateu mais forte e esquentou o dia que estava frio de bater os dentes. O resto vocês podem imaginar 🤗. Sabe aquela cara que criança fica quando chega na Disney – alguns adultos também😂? Ou quando conhecemos um ídolo? Pois quem estava comigo me disse que fiquei igual criança e anestesiado. Visita e oportunidade inesquecível... pura sorte. Energia boa atrai energia boa 🙌🏻. Acredito nisso! Depois dessa vez estive novamente na vinícola e falei várias vezes com o simpaticíssimo Giacomo, mas a primeira foi inesquecível! Ele nos recebeu com muito carinho e passamos quase 3 horas com ele provando a sua tropa de elite completa, inclusive seus melhores Brunellos. A Casanova di Neri é família, desde os donos até a equipe que trabalha na vinícola. Foi fundada em 1971 por Giovanni Neri, pai de Giacomo, que assumiu o negócio em 1991. “O pai tinha uma grande visão e um amor infinito por Montalcino e Brunello numa época em que a realidade não era o sucesso que vemos hoje”, diz o filho. A 1ª colheita de Brunello foi em 1978. Depois vieram Cerretalto em 1981; Rosso di Montalcino em 1982; o espetacular Tenuta Nuova em 1993; o excelente 100% cabernet sauvignon Pietradonice em 2000; IrRosso di Casanova di Neri e o branco Ibbianco em 2011; e em 2018, o IrRosè e o novíssimo Giovanni Neri, um rosso dedicado ao seu fundador para celebrar o 50º aniversário da vinícola. Wed had this bottle -- Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, made mostly from Sangiovese -- in the cellar for a year when John brought it out to drink with Dotties famous meatballs. From the first sip, we knew hed made a good choice. Made from organically farmed grapes, it was just so honest, so real, that it gave us a night of relaxation, and who doesnt need that these days? John had trouble putting into words why he liked it so much so he asked Dottie to write down some thoughts. Here they are: We love wines that over-deliver and this one did for me Big Time. It was soulful. The earth-fruit balance was so real, elemental. The minerals and acidity and just-right tannins lifted it and rounded it out so seamlessly that I could have drunk it all night. It was a Look, Ma, No Hands kind of wine. It just was. It reminded me of other very good Sangiovese wines but with extra body, more oomph. More red tastes than purple and with a touch of basil. We also liked the 2014 that we had a couple of years ago. Made by a winery founded in 1961, this appears fairly widely available for $25 or less. We were sent the 2016, which is out there, but the 2017 is more available and were sure its equally good (though the extra year our bottle received lost in our cellar likely improved it). Il Veneto è una regione tra le più vocate dal punto di visita vitivinicolo di tutta l’Italia. Un territorio variegato e multiforme, sempre in fermento, con realtà produttive emergenti che si affiancano a nomi storici e prestigiosi. Tra questi ultimi non si può non citare la cantina Masi, impresa di famiglia da ben sette generazioni che appartiene alla famiglia Boscaini sin dalla fine del XVIII secolo. Contando su estesi possedimenti vitati sia in Italia che in Argentina, dove con la linea Tupungato si dà voce al terroir di Mendoza, il cuore dell’azienda, con la cantina e il centro direzionale, rimane però saldamente ancorato alla Valpolicella, luogo da cui ha preso il via l’intero progetto vitivinicolo. Ma ora andiamo a parlare del vino degustato questa sera. Il Veronese Rosso Campofiorin della Cantina Masi nasce nel 1964, nei vigneti situati sulle dolci colline veronesi. È prodotto da uve Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, raccolte e selezionate interamente a mano. Questo vino dà vita ad una nuova categoria di vini Veneti ispirati alla tecnica dell’Amarone. È caratterizzato da un colore rosso intenso. Al naso si apre con un elegante bouquet fruttato di ciliegia matura, arricchito da dolci spezie. Fundada em 1979, a Opus One de Napa Valley é o casamento do velho com o novo mundo, pela joint venture entre duas lendas: o francês Barão Philippe Rothschild dono do Mouton Rothschild e o “local” Robert Mondavi, que se associaram para criar uma vinícola em torno de um vinho excepcional de corte bordalês, utilizando o melhor cabernet sauvignon da Califórnia. Dizem que a inspiração de Mondavi para o projeto veio bem antes, em 1962, quando ele e a esposa visitaram nada menos que 48 vinícolas na Europa. Outro fator que ajudou na parceria foi a revolução que estava acontecendo na Califórnia nos anos 70 e definitivamente comprovada com o “Julgamento de Paris” em 1976, quando os vinhos americanos conquistaram definitivamente o respeito dos europeus. De férias nos EUA com sua esposa Pauline, filha de americanos, o Barão ficou curioso para entender “o que estava acontecendo”, pediu indicações de com quem poderia falar e tudo levou à Mondavi. Aproximação feita, se encontraram anos depois em Bordeaux, quando o californiano foi convidado para visitar o Mouton pelo Barão. Mondavi vivia um período difícil, com problemas de relacionamento em família e quase quebrado. Mas sempre um sonhador, saiu de lá com o acordo fechado! A primeira safra de 1979 foi lançada em 1984 ao mesmo tempo que a safra de 1980. Em 2004, a vinícola Robert Mondavi foi vendida para a empresa Constellation, que fechou um acordo de gestão com os bordoleses para administrar a Opus One, mas seus vinhos entraram para a história para sempre. O nome da vinícola reforça o primeiro blend e as expectativas altíssimas. Do latim, vem do termo musical Opus One, que é atribuído a uma composição geralmente considerada a primeira obra-prima de um compositor🎼. Olá amigos da Confidemus! Nesta última quarta-feira, 16, participamos na Enoteca Permont de Santo André/SP, da degustação da Vinícola Cordilheira de SantAna, localizada em Santana do LIvramento/RS. Os proprietários e enólogos Rosana e Gladistão fizeram uma apresentação em que pudemos conhecer alguns de seus rótulos, como o Chardonnay 2016; o Touriga Nacional 2014; o Merlot 2010; o Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 e o Tannat 2007 - que vinhos sensacionais!!! Os rótulos se mostraram robustos, com excelente corpo, equilibrados e aptos ao envelhecimento ainda por mais alguns anos. A vinícola optou justamente por esse tipo de vinho mais longevo e com personalidade, impressionando a todos os presentes. Mais uma vinícola nacional que produz rótulos extremamente bem elaborados e que colocam o nível do vinho brasileiro em outro patamar. I was extremely fortunate to attend two fantastic verticals of Brunello last week. 4 decades of Val di Suga Vigna Spuntali, from the current vintage 2015, to 2010, 2001, 1995 and finally the first vintage ever made in 1988. Andrea Lonardi did an amazing job in explaining the terroir approach of Val di Suga in Montalcino and the aging potential of this single-vineyard. Like if it wasn’t enough, I had the privilege of going through 8 vintages of Biondi-Santi Riserva that celebrate the life of Franco, from 2012, his last vintage, to 2010, 2006, 1998, 1995, 1983, 1975 and finishing with his first, the 1971. Incredible to see how these wines age and get better with time preserving acidity, fruit and mostly elegance. One of three new red wines Roussillon-based biodynamic producer Le Soula is releasing this year, the 2009 alongside the 2014 and 2018, which gives a fascinating glimpse of vintages, styles and what the Roussillon is capable of. 2009 was a cracking vintage in the region and the nose offers the drinker so much promise that the wine delivers on the palate. It is a blend of 67% Carignan, 30% Syrah, and 3% Grenache Noir, most vines pretty old (some up to 70 years) and grown on largely granite at high altitude, the fruit is whole bunch pressed up to three weeks and then spending 21 months in a variety of wood formats and ages, but all large format and very little new wood. The wine is in secondary stage, although the acidity and freshness makes it feel so youthful. On the eye it is dark ruby with a redish hue, the nose is a real ‘come on’ offering a tempting mix of blackberry, black cherry, dried fig, liquorice root, sweet wood; the mouthfeel is medium bodied, a delightful mix of age and youth, terrific balance – still firm acidity, but with real depth of flavour, fruit more on the red spectrum, more macerated strawberry and red cherry. 🍇Wow che bomba💣 Uvaggio: 85 % Cabernet Sauvignon 15 % CabernetFranc Tipologia dei terreni: I terreni su cui insistono i vigneti hanno caratteristiche morfologiche varie e composite con forte presenza di zone calcaree ricche di galestro e di sassi e parzialmente argillosi; altitudine compresa fra i 100 e i 300 metri s.l.m., con esposizione a ovest/ sud-ovest. Clima: Cè stata unelevata temperatura estiva, con un autunno buono allinizio e piuttosto caldo. La stagione primaverile è stata poco piovosa, mentre quella estiva e pre- autunnale sono state addirittura siccitose, oltre al caldo. Vendemmia: Luva è maturata velocemente,la temperatura di vendemmia era assai elevata (25- 28°C) Vinificazione: La vinificazione però non è stata difficoltosa perché la vendemmia è avvenuta solo nelle ore fresche e in più in cantina i tini di fermentazione sono stati raffrescati per ruscellamento. Macerazione: innanzi tutto il tenore in acido malico nelluva era basso, dato il clima estivo-autunnale. Invecchiamento: In barriques di rovere Slavonia per circa 40% e 60%, in barriques di Tronçais, con piccola frazione di Allier. La percentuale di legno nuovo è del 65%. Il rimanente 35% era legno di primo e secondo passaggio. La sosta in barriques è stata di 22 mesi, dato lelevato contenuto polifenico del vino, anche se è stato impiegato molto legno nuovo. 100/100 punti @james.suckling Ribes, more, ciliegie nere e liquirizia. Anche menta. Così aromatico. Completo e setoso con uno stile voluttuoso. Così denso ma equilibrato. Così complesso. Molteplici livelli che aspettano solo di essere scoperti. Mi ricorda il Latour del 1959. Cè così tanto amore e dolcezza. Merita il suo status di leggenda. Ma l’apoteosi della goduria giunge quando stappiamo “Il Domenico”.⠀ Questo Sagrantino è prodotto dalle migliori uve della vecchia vigna di Colcimino. Il nome è una dedica al fondatore, Domenico Adanti, colui che negli anni ‘60 acquisto la villa sul colle Arquata, ora sede dell’azienda. Ovviamente parliamo di sagrantino in purezza, il cui lungo affinamento passa da 36 mesi in legno e 24 in bottiglia.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ È un vino potente, dal colore porpora intenso. Naso di cacao e caramello, marasca, mora... prosegue in bocca su note balsamiche, con un tannino morbido, avvolgente. Di grande struttura, e corpo.... While I’d have loved to meet everyone in person, to put boots on the ground, and to share time around a table heavy with food and wine, I’m truly gobsmacked by the tremendous effort so many individuals obviously put in to deliver an enlightening virtual enrichment trip. • I’ve been continually awed by the resiliency and innovation in our industry since, to parrot Vonnegut, the excrement hit the air-conditioning. From the mutual-aid programs built seemingly overnight to provide out of work hospitality workers with resources and hope, to the grassroots movements advocating for the needs of independent restaurants in Washington, right now the hospitality and wine industries are as vibrant as they are vulnerable, and I’m proud to be a member of the community. • Many, many thanks to the @sommfoundation, @sommjournal, @pasoroblescab, @tastingpanel, and every last person involved with making this happen. As Winter approaches in Australia, how about a classic Italian dish matched with a Barbera D’Alba from Piemonte? 🍷🍴 This 2012 Piero Busso Barbera @piero_busso was the perfect match🍷. . . . Just the right age with rich flavours of cherry and plum and a hint of spice to complement the richness of the meat balls in a beautiful tomato based sauce. No further description required! 🍅 😋 🍷. 🍷 Like Nebbiolo, Barbera is a native variety of Piemonte, but much more forgiving and less sensitive to adverse vintage conditions. Production is in greater quantities making it an affordable everyday drinking alternative to the superb Pier Busso Barbaresco, saved for those special dining occasions. This ‘Majano’ Barbera, is sourced from two Piero Busso vineyards near the beautiful village of Neive. 🍷 🍷 I enjoyed this wine and food recently in Melbourne, having acquired it from a nearby fine wine merchant, but in 2015 was fortunate to visit L’Azienda Agricola Piero Busso and taste their portfolio of wines in the company of Pierguido and Emanuela Busso, but more about that in another post. 🍷🇮🇹🇮🇹. Tasting Massetino 2018 & 2017 and Masseto 2017 & 2012 🍷 Last Sunday I had the privelege to taste the iconic Masseto / Massetino wines at a Masterclass given by Vianney Gravereaux Global Sales Manager Masseto at @goessensprofessionalsinwine in Maastricht during the Fall tasting. The Massetino 2018 was fantastic. Ofcourse young but screaming with potential. The Masseto 2017 and 2012 were really amazing. 👌👌 A small story about Masseto: The estate was first founded by Lodovico Antinori in 1981 – Antinori intended to produce Bordeaux-style wines on the Bolgheri site, and after first creating Ornellaia, and later Masseto, had created two of Italy’s most celebrated labels. Oenologist Andre Tchelistcheff first identified that the terroir of the Masseto hill, with its unique grey and blue clay, would be particularly well-suited to planting Merlot. The name Masseto comes from the presence of the masses of clay on the hill, which are as hard as rock: ‘masso’ in Italian means rock or boulder. From the first vintage, Masseto was vinified and aged at Ornellaia, but spring 2019 saw the official opening of the label’s own winery. The 27,000-square-foot, ultramodern underground facility was created with a revamped cellar, top-of-the-range vinification systems and a wine caveau featuring every vintage dating back to 1986. The 2018 vintage (only the 33rd vintage to be produced) is the first to be made in its very own winery. Production totals around just 30,000 bottles a year for Masseto. Masseto’s second wine, ‘Massetino’ a blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, is a relatively new arrival, debuting with the 2017 vintage in autumn 2019. It came about following a hot and dry growing period when less Masseto was produced, and the estate felt it was the ‘right moment’ to pursue a second wine. Nowadays the Masseto winery is owned by the Frescobaldy family. Not much to tell in front of such an amazing bottle. Wonderful color for a 23 years old wine: deep garnet red, concentrated with orange hues in the nail. The nose is a whirlwind of perfumes: from ripe red fruit in jam to the floral notes of dried rose petals and lavender, from the sweet spicy notes of vanilla and cocoa to those of undergrowth, bark, oak, menthol and balsamic notes. The sip is full, embracing, of an incredible softness with a tannin that is an affectionate and delicate caress. Very long finish. Pairing with Ossobuco alla Milanese? Last weekend I did the WSET level 1 course so I was fortunate enough to try 14 new wines! Im going to post a few of my favourites over the next couple of days. This is The Barossan Shiraz 2017 from Australia 🇦🇺 it cost $23 in Canada. A clear deep purple colour, clean medium fruity nose. Medium tannins, medium finish, off dry full bodied wine with medium acidity. Lovely plum, dark cherry and blackberry notes on the palate. I havent had much experience with shiraz wines but I actually really liked this one. Giovanni Carlo Sacchet ed Antonio Mario Zaccheo fondarono la Carpineto col proposito di produrre un Chianti Classico di livello internazionale. Una rivoluzione, per quei tempi. I due soci videro nella Toscana un enorme potenziale, dove poter produrre grandi vini applicando le tecniche più all’avanguardia e aumentare gli standard qualitativi dell’epoca. E ci riuscirono. Ma ora andiamo a parlare di questo vino degustato,ci troviamo davanti ad un Cabernet Sauvignon in purezza. Il Farnito, il cui nome deriva da un tipo di quercia in Toscana chiamata Farnia, fu messo in commercio per la prima volta nel 1987, a seguito di una lunga sperimentazione fatta con vitigni internazionali. La fermentazione è avvenuta in recipienti separati secondo la provenienza delle uve, con tempi di macerazione delle bucce di 10 e 15 giorni e temperature da 25 a 29 °C. In primavera, dopo la fermentazione malolattica, il vino è unito in un sol corpo e posto in piccole botti di rovere dove rimane fino al gennaio successivo, mese in cui tolto dai barili viene imbottigliato. Deve sostare, infine, per un periodo non inferiore agli otto mesi in ambiente a temperature controllata, prima di essere messo in commercio. Esame visivo: Rosso rubino, con leggere sfumature aranciate. Esame gustativo: Netto e intenso, con sensazioni complesse di spezie, liquirizia, vaniglia e marasca. Several folks were able to solve this one (with many picking out the tongue-in-cheek nod to Sideways with the fruitcake clue 5) so great job to @solovino_italiano @piyushgadkari @alexxxandraaa92 @patriciopach32 @whineontherocks @thegrapegrind @ka2towns @tony.bones.jones @annamantchakidi @ellenclifford @megandmerlot and @outwines. . The most popular lateral, by far, named was one that I have a world of trouble with as well—Malbec. This trips me up all the freaking time with Napa Merlot but also, I’m finding, w/ riper vintages of Right Bank Bordeaux like 2016, 2010, 2009, etc. . We’ll go into this a little more in the comments with the clue review. Other laterals include Rioja and Grenache—particularly riper Garnacha from Priorat/Montsant. . While we didn’t have Spain 🇪🇸 as one of the clue 1 country clues (cause it would be uber evil to be given a Spanish Merlot for a blind tasting exam), those laterals certainly make sense from flavor/aromas and structure clues for various reasons. . As an major Bordeaux geek, it was tough to narrow the pic roll down to just 10 of my favorite St. Emilion wines. But I tried my best with favs such as @instant_becot @jeanlucthunevin_valandraud @chateautrottevieille @chateauangelus @chateau_paviemacquin @chateautroplongmondot #monbousquet #quinaultlenclos #fonplegade . What I find most fascinating about St. Emilion is how different those terroirs are between the limestone plateau, the gravelly northwest on the border with Pomerol, the clay & limestone slopes descending from the plateau and the more alluvial soils the closer you get towards the Dordogne. . In fact, one of the first things I ever used a Coravin on was creating a “study flight” of wines from the same vintage from each of these different terroirs & trying them side by side. Nel 1855 la Francia di Napoleone III ospitò a Parigi l’Esposizione Universale. Per l’occasione egli decise di dare incarico alla camera di commercio dell’epoca di creare una classificazione precisa dei vini di Bordeaux, in particolare del #medoc e delle #graves , in modo tale che venisse espressa ufficialmente tutta la professionalità e l’esperienza vitivinicola francese. Siccome al tempo questi concetti ben si allineavano con la grandezza e l’eccellenza di alcuni Château, essi decisero di porre ai vertici della qualitá proprio queste proprietà dividendole in cinque classi di #grandcru . Quelli che risultarono al top nella zona del Medoc, quindi degni del titolo di Premiere Grand Cru Classè, furono soltanto in 4: Château Haut-Brion, Château Latour, Château Margaux e Château Lafite-Rothschild. Nel 1973 venne aggiunto Château Mouton-Rothschild a completare la gamma dei 5 tuttora esistenti. Bene, 3 di questi 5 #premieregrandcruclassé erano al nostro tavolo. Another great Rosh Chodesh adar event hosted by none other but Dovid Hecht of @wine_and_tech and his talented wife @inthekitchenwithmimi. The food was prepared by chef yosef of @chef.yosef and the Siyum was performed by none other than the famous Jonah bibi of @jonahbb. The wines were beautiful starting with the whites. Newly imported silver from @weingut_hans_wirsching made by none other than the talented than Andrea wirsching of @wgt_hans_wirsching. Her dedication to the gefen hashalom project is unparalleled. Another blockbuster and first timer is anothology by @yaacov.oryah of @yaacov_oryah_wines. What a blend and clearly a beautiful israeli whites . We then moved over to the reds where the castel 08 from @domaineducastel was sensational made by none other then elie ben salem a fellow sepharadi @egcastel. The 08 was drinking so beautiful and if you closed your eyes could if been mistaken for an 08 bordeaux! Really old world style elegance and power. Next was the yarden 2007 trio from @yardenwinesisrael with yarden rom taking the cake . What power and elegance. Tannins softening and beautiful integration of black fruit and tertiary notes. We then moved over quickly to France with Lafon Rochet as a 2017 sample. Soft elegance and feminine like - very characteristic of the 2017 vintage. Older wines was echo 11 and Virginie 11 and 15. The 15 was the crackerjack and the. Moved over to cheating Volais. Old@world stink and Brett with perfect acidity allowing this baby to run the distance. QPR alert - especially for the grand daddy like @asetton. Chateau valandraud 03 was a test for mevushal option was very nice and followed by the Solomon lot 70 of @covenantwines by @jeffmorganlot70. Quiero escribir estas líneas dando las gracias a las personas que me quieren y que me apoyan en este trabajo como es el de SUMILLER. Sé que no es fácil todo esto, pero soy un luchador, con capacidad, con empatía con muchas ganas de aprender y hacerme un hueco en este mundo , intentar ser un referente siempre desde la humildad que me caracteriza. Me considero un sumiller especialista en vinos de Jerez, siempre que hago un maridaje no utilizo tecnicismos, más bien hago que el cliente entienda la elaboración del vino de una manera informal pero a la vez didáctica, creo que hago bastante bien mi trabajo por las buenas felicitaciones que estoy recibiendo últimamente dentro de este sector; sector de la sumillería dónde hay tan buenos profesionales y a los que varios alabo desde hace muchos años. Soy una esponja y quiero seguir y seguir aprendiendo porque este mundo es un camino muy largo y tedioso y aquí nunca se deja de aprender. Età media delle viti 28 anni 🦠 3.300 ceppi per ettaro ⏳ Fermentazione spontanea in vasche di cemento vetrificato, 36 mesi in botti di rovere di da 26 hl, sosta in bottiglia 🌡 14% Vol • Per degustare al meglio gli straordinari vini de Il Paradiso di Manfredi bisogna conoscerne la filosofia. Ci troviamo nel versante Nord-Est di Montalcino, dove a circa 300 mt s.l.m. trovano dimora i 2,5 ettari di vigneti di cui 2 a Brunello. Una micro azienda che produce nel suo complesso meno di 10.000 bottiglie allanno, ognuna delle quali frutto del massimo rispetto per la natura e per il territorio. Immane lavoro in vigna con potatura secca in Gennaio rispettando le fasi lunari e molteplici potature verdi nel corso dei mesi che portano addirittura al taglio dei grappoli che non rispettano gli standard qualitativi. Viene svolta inoltre una ulteriore selezione dei chicchi sul grappolo in pianta poco prima della vendemmia ed anche su tavola di cernita prima della diraspatura e pigiatura. Principio di gravità in cantina, i lieviti sono quelli propri delluva, il metodo è quello della tradizione (Manfredi è stato tra i fondatori del Consorzio nel 1967). Fatta questa doverosa premessa cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare da questo Brunello? Semplicemente di bere un pezzo di territorio in relazione allannata di appartenenza. La bellezza sta proprio nella sincerità e nellesaltazione del terroir. Un Brunello che nasce in unannata straordinaria e che regala austerità, potenza ed equilibrio. Frutto surmaturo, ancora croccante, spezie a non finire ed una ventata di freschezza balsamica. Stesse sensazioni che si ritrovano al palato dove tutte le componenti si fondono allunisono. Una bella bevuta per molti che diventa straordinaria per i pochi che ne conoscono la genesi. Barolo Borgogno Riserva 2010 - “meu deus, o que falar desse vinho...” . On Father’s Day, what could be more appropriate than to share the patriarch of the Super Tuscan movement. Well, if you follow Tenuta San Guido, then you know there is something special about the vintages ending in “8,” beginning with the inaugural 1968 and continuing through with the 1978, 1988, 1998, and 2008. These vintages offer often the more classic expressions from the house and are the preferred style of estate owner Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta and his family. Well, it continues in 2018 with Guidalberto. This is one of the most restrained and finessed we have tasted in the twenty years of the celebrated Super Second. The insider note is that 20% of the Guidalberto’s fruit is young-vine Sassicaia, truly making it one of the finest “Baby Sassicaia” bottlings to date. The DNA and pedigree shows through and what attracts is just how light the wine is on its feet. There is Burgundian sensibility here in 2018, and the wine impresses right now with its succulent and juicy fruit, Mediterranean salinity, and herbaceous undertones. While the older sibling requires patience for the collector, Guidalberto offers approachability in the pocket and on the palate due to its youthful blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta has explained that he created Guidalberto for “two reasons: first of all, the desire to see what we could accomplish with Merlot, a grape that we had never used before; second, the desire to offer the consumer a wine which could be appreciated at a younger age compared to our veteran Sassicaia.
