I had always wanted a camera of my own from the moment I understood what it was used for. But I could never dare ask my parents for one. So the minute I accumulated my first Rs 10,000, after four months of working as an assistant with Anupam Khers company, I decided to buy an SLR. A Nikon FM 10. This is one of the first pictures I took using that camera. I remember I had taken permission from my friend’s dad who was then a police officer, to go to the terrace of the new Taj building. (this was way before the terrorist attack) I had used point and shoot cameras before, borrowing from various people at various points of time. I remember taking a point and shoot to Kerela, for my first long trek. I remember how it felt to look through the viewfinder and see the world. It was the same world, but when it was framed by the four edges I could see through my viewfinder, it gave me a thrill, like i was discovering it for the first time. On this day in 1985: 35 years ago on the 21st September 1985 a monster was lifted from the depths of Loch Ness. That monster was a Wellington Bomber, which ditched into Loch Ness during a training flight on 31st December 1940. It lay hidden at the bottom of the Loch until an American team of Nessie hunters came across it during a survey in 1976. To save the aircraft a salvage operation was launched, led by Loch Ness Wellington Association Ltd. Thanks to public donations and funding from National Heritage Memorial Fund the WW2 bomber was successfully raised out of the Loch and transported home to Brooklands, the place it was built, for restoration. The Loch Ness Wellington, ‘R for Robert’, now takes centre stage in the Brooklands Aircraft Factory exhibition and you can come and see it and discover more about its incredible story every day the Museum is open. I loved the design of the TX-225 GAVw the moment I first saw it on screen. This is my modified version of @lucasinc14 s model as sold on @brick.vault which is inspired by @luca_s_projects and Maelven on Flickr. I redesigned the front and top armor and lowered the structure of the underbelly to create space for a somewhat detailed interior. The tank comfortably holds three Tank Troopers with hatches either open or closed. Additionally, I smoothed out as much of the surface as possible and added some details like long range comms, rusty spots and spare tracks. IMPORTANT: Although today is Day 1 of #SharkWeek, the ocean has another horrifying environmental disaster on its hands, so we’ve decided to share this news as our Day 1 post. A Japanese cargo ship carrying 4 tonnes of oil was ran aground on a coral reef in Mauritius and 1 tonne of oil has leaked into the sea. Workers were allegedly seeking to stop more oil from leaking, but with high winds and rough seas on Sunday there were reports of new cracks to the ships hull. The shocking thing is, the ship was ran aground on the 25th of July. There have been no answers from officials that have been reported as to how the spill has got this bad when they knew about the issue since that time. Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth has declared a state of emergency and appealed for international help. He said the spill “represents a danger” for the country of 1.3 million people that relies heavily on tourism and has been hurt by travel restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Satellite images show a dark slick spreading in the turquoise waters near wetlands that the government called “very sensitive.” Wildlife workers and volunteers, meanwhile, ferried dozens of baby tortoises and rare plants from an island near the spill, Ile aux Aigrettes, to the mainland. Uni students, citizen volunteers, wildlife carers are removing the oil with their bare and hand buckets! On 19 November 1944, Shinano was formally commissioned at Yokosuka, having spent the previous two weeks fitting out and performing sea trials. Worried about her safety after a U.S. reconnaissance bomber fly-over, the Navy General Staff ordered Shinano to depart for Kure by no later than 28 November, where the remainder of her fitting-out would take place. Abe asked for a delay in the sailing date as the majority of her watertight doors had yet to be installed, the compartment air tests had not been conducted, and many holes in the compartment bulkheads for electrical cables, ventilation ducts and pipes had not been sealed. Importantly, fire mains and bailing systems lacked pumps and were inoperable; even though most of the crew had sea-going experience, they lacked training in the portable pumps on board. SpaceX announced that it is hoping to create offshore facilities in the near future for the sake of launching the Starship away from populated areas. And China, the latest member of the superpowers-in-space club, is currently building the “Eastern Aerospace Port” off the coast of Haiyang city in the eastern province of Shandong. This mobile launch facility is being developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the country’s largest aerospace and defense contractor. Once fully operational, it will be used to launch light vehicles, as well as for building and maintaining rockets, satellites, and related space applications. Giannis D Shipwreck of 1983 In 1983 the Giannis D, a Grecian Bulk Carrier, was on course for open water in the Red Sea, when the Captain turned over the helm to one of his junior officers and retired to his cabin to rest. Soon afterwards he was rudely awakened by the sound of his ship running aground. All at New Brighton RNLI wish to extend their sincere sympathies to the family involved in yesterday’s tragedy. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. New Brighton RNLI along with RNLI Hoylake Lifeboat Station and RNLI Lifeguards North West from New Brighton and Harrison Drive responded to yesterday’s incident after two walkers and a dog got into difficulty on the promenade off Portland slipway. The Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team was also tasked. Weather conditions at the time were not good with a strong north west wind force 6, gusting up to 7 and a flooding tide. On arrival, our inshore lifeboat crew rescued the man and dog from the water and we would like to wish them a speedy recovery. Ich verstehe es nicht die Gemeinde Schipkau und die Stadt Großräschen und die Stadt Senftenberg könnten Geld beantragen und ihn somit retten. Wozu ist denn sonst ein Denkmal da? Und so wie der Plan war ihn auseinander zu nehmen und bissel was zu erhalten ist auch nicht richtig. Denkmal ist Denkmal und er ist ein Denkmal und nicht eine Tafel oder eine Schaufel. Man merkt ja das sich Wiederstand bildet warum geht man nicht drauf ein und versucht jemanden zu finden. - So a cargo ship ran aground in Aberdeen today... about the most exciting thing that’s happened in months
August 30, 1943. A special day at Portsmouth Navy Yard as two brand new fleet boats are prepared for launching on the same morning. Balao-class boats USS BANG(SS-385) and USS PILOTFISH(SS-386). USS BANG would be credited by JANAC with 8 ships sunk for 20,181 tons. She would be transferred to Spain in 1972, and scrapped in 1983 after a long career. USS PILOTFISH wouldnt be credited with any sinkings in her five war patrols, however, she did perform life guard duty on many occasions, performing well in this capacity. She would hold the distinction of participating in the official surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. This was probably the height of PILOTFISHs career. She just never seemed able to pick up the scent trail of a target worth a torpedo. Herself would be deemed a target worth an atomic bomb in 1946, serving as a target for Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

SOCCOM floats are allowing us to get data from the tumultuous seas of the Southern Ocean. What happens when they go under ice? Read on....⠀ ⠀ Float #18864, named SaberScience, was deployed in windy, gray weather around 58 degrees South. Float #18994, aka Winston’s Journey, was launched into flat calm seas at 63.5 degrees South. Both of these floats may end up under the ice at some point during the Antarctic winter and are up to the challenge. The software for these SOCCOM floats will direct them to stay under any ice rather than try to surface after their profiles. #TBT - 21 years ago this month, Crowleys tug Sea Victory towed the aircraft carrier ex-USS Oriskany from Vallejo, California, around the southern tip of South American via the Strait of Magellan to Beaumont, Texas, as it was too large to fit through the Panama Canal. The 112-day, 15,153-mile tow for the U.S. Navy marked one of the longest in Crowley history. The voyage was completed on schedule, on budget, and without a single lost-time accident or mechanical failure. Le 27 janvier 1968, le sous marin la Minerve coule au large de Toulon avec 52 personnes à bord. ⚓ Chaque été, lorsque jallais à Toulon et quon était sur un bateau, je me disais quils étaient peut-être pas loin de nous... 🌊 Un sous marin qui disparaît, quon ne retrouve pas, cétait un mystère et ça me fascinait. Jai demandé aux libraires de la ville, si il y avait des documents sur cette histoire à lire, rien! Et en juillet 2019, je lisais les infos sur mon tél et je vois : La Minerve, brisée en trois morceaux repose bien au large de Toulon, par 2.370 m de fond. Lattente a du être insupportable pour les familles mais le plus triste cest quévidemment il ny aura ni corps, ni ossements retrouvés.
