As Terry ran through the Atlantic provinces in April, May and June of 1980, school was still in session. Despite running an average of 26 miles a day, he was determined to tell his story and explain why he was running to as many people as he could. This meant that there were some very lucky schools who could boast of an in-school visit from Terry Fox! The students were enthralled by him; how he talked with ease about being a cancer survivor, his willingness to show how his artificial leg worked; his sense of humour; his dedication to his run. Donna Jordan has a vivid memory of seeing Terry on May 2 in Corner Brook, NL: “I was 10 years old and had an instant schoolgirl crush on this very handsome young man speaking strange words I’d never heard before; words such as ‘cancer’ and ‘amputation’ and ‘chemotherapy’. He spoke these words without fear. I was convinced he was the coolest boy I’d ever laid eyes on. He allowed us to touch his prosthetic leg and told us how his hair wasn’t curly before the chemo. In return, we sang ‘Thank you God for giving us Terry.’” Today, millions of Canadian students still relate to Terry, his dedication, his try. Fonda’s life has been documented with countless iconic images like these of her work. Anti-Vietnam War protests. Aerobics. Climate activism. When I turned 60, I realised that I was entering my third act. And third acts are important. They can make sense of the two acts that preceded them, Fonda told RN Conversations. Fonda grew up in Hollywood aristocracy. Her father, Henry Fonda, was also a famous actor. She studied alongside Marilyn Monroe. In her 30s, Fonda reassessed her life and work and contorversially became a leader of the anti-Vietnam War movement. The 1980s saw the rise and rise of Jane Fondas Workout video franchise. Up until then, women werent supposed to have muscles … it was a joke what a workout for women looked like back then, she said. Today, Fonda stars in a comedy show Grace and Frankie with her friend Lily Tomlin. She has a new book. And a new sense of purpose in climate action. If I werent doing what Im doing, I wouldnt be able to sleep at night. I wouldnt be able to look at myself in the mirror. Im a celebrity. I have a platform that can be used. How am I going to use it?
