Wizard Island Wizard island is a volcanic cinder cone which has formed an island in the west end of Crater Lake National Park, Oregon. The volcano was created more than 6,000 years ago when a volcano erupted into what is know today as Crater Lake National Park. Wizard island is built on a platform of andesite lava. It includes a large cone of andesite cinder which formed on top. Some parts of the cone which form Wizard island were formed by eruptions underwater, while other sections were part of eruptions above water. The island looks relatively small within the large lake and high rim walls. The island actually rises about 767 feet above the surface of the lake and about 2,400 - 2,500 feet above the floor of the caldera under the surface of the lake. The island is about 1 mile across. The area at the base of the cone is approximately 3.02 square miles. The volume of the cone is 0.6 cubic miles. Follow @Mitty for more. — REPOST • @natgeo Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Mitty As our ship made its way into an inlet late in the evening, as we were looking for shelter, we were greeted by a colony of Adélie penguins along the soft slope of an iceberg. After hours of diving deep into the frigid black waters off Antarctica in search of silverfish and krill, they shuffled into groups and greeted one another in a chorus of raspy squawks. The survival of these plucky little birds is dependent on the natural rhythm of sea ice as it forms and recedes—a cycle that is now threatened as global temperatures rise. As I watched them gossip among themselves and preen their salty feathers, I worried about their future. Our @Sealegacy team has worked to establish marine protected areas around Antarctica to reduce the impacts of a drastically shifting climate, giving sea life a chance to recover. The battle against climate change is both a sprint to save our global biodiversity and a marathon to mitigate the effects on future generations. It’s going to take all of us to meet these challenges and save our oceans. We just launched a new blog series called Northern Latitudes, where we feature topical maps from our Arctic Marine Atlas and elsewhere, with a peek behind the scenes into how they are made. The focus of our first blog in the series is on two maps from our Arctic Marine Atlas: one map that illustrates polynyas and another showing phytoplankton blooms.⠀ ⠀ Polynyas are areas of water that remain open even when surrounded by sea ice. Flaw leads are also areas of open water that form between sea ice that is attached to land and the moving pack ice. These two maps demonstrate the important role that polynyas and flaw leads play in supporting Arctic ecosystems and phytoplankton growth. A curious Weddel seal lounges on some sea ice near the top of the Antarctic peninsula. We were lucky on this day, and managed to get our zodiacs in the water and did a few sea ice landings where we were able to walk out on to some free-floating bits of ice, bound for who knows where. The seals were very curious about what we were up to, and some came right over to us, crossing two bits of ice and scrambled up to meet us, coming incredibly close. Not this one though. This one barely cared enough to spare us a glance as our zodiac motors interrupted his nap on the way past - but he was cute. The South Boathouse at Sugar Pine Point State Park is home to this unusual structure... have you seen it? Contrary to popular belief this is not a train track leading into the center of the lake. It’s actually a historic boat launch used to move boats into and out of the lake from their storage facilities in the early 1900’s. As the wealthy began to settle in Lake Tahoe they needed somewhere safe to store their boats during the snowy winter season. Durante enero, nuestro estudiante en práctica profesional, Pablo Mejía (PUCV) y el encargado del LOFEC, Nicolás Mayorga, junto a otros investigadores del Copas Sur-Austral realizaron una campaña oceanográfica en las cercanías de Tortel. Se hicieron mediciones de CTD, Nutrientes y además se instaló un ADCP y se descargaron datos de sensores de temperatura, conductividad y presión y de estaciones meteorológicas a lo largo del sistema de canales Baker-Martinez. - @lofec_udec on Instagram

ANTHROPOMORPHISM- “the attribution of human characteristics, emotions, and behaviors to animals or non-human things.” You may have seen this footage a few years ago. A polar bear appeared to be “patting” a dog, and the whole world said “awww 🥰”. That’s because we anthropomorphised the situation. We love patting dogs and having that emotional connection with them, so by seeing the same apparent physical behaviour in another animal, our brains create an emotional reasoning that allows us to feel closer to the polar bear. Unfortunately, this emotional reasoning often leads to general shock when the situation changes, and can even create dangerous situations. Although we may like to think this polar bear loves to play with dogs as we do, we must step back and understand it’s true intentions as a polar bear, not a human. This polar bear was later documented eating another dog... So is anthropomorphism always a bad thing? What if, by believing an animal is displaying the same emotions as a human (we are also animals by the way), it creates conservation awareness and action for that species? Protects its home? “A baby fur seal hides in a pot to avoid the stampede of adult fur seals on South Georgia, Antarctica. At first glance this moment might seem cute, but there is a both an irony and a dark history here: these pots were used to boil the fat off of elephant seals in the early 20th century - only one hundred years ago. Elephant seals were hunted for their body fat and fur seals were nearly wiped out for their fur. What a difference 24 hours makes! 💙 Meet #316, a weanling harbor seal rescued from Kennebunkport and admitted to our critical care facility last night. She is extremely underweight for her age, weighing just 25 pounds. For reference, a healthy harbor seal pup weighs about 25 pounds at birth. 😯 Not only is she malnourished, but she also has several small wounds on her body and around her muzzle. She has been receiving warm, medicated baths to keep her and her wounds clean. Stay tuned for updates about this little ones progress in the coming days! - @marinemammalsofme on Instagram
