This week we received the news that we have to farewell our friends down the road at @skydivetaupo as they close their doors due to COVID. We can only imagine how heartbreaking this must be for their whole team, as we feel such sadness to lose a legendary company within the industry 😔 We’ve worked closely alongside Skydive Taupo over the years sharing planes, beers, tandem masters, and of course the passion for skydiving! Anyone who has been to Taupo knows the iconic sight of seeing their plane ‘Pinky’ and our yellow plane up in the sky, and it’s going to feel weird without them alongside us. While we’re absolutely devastated to lose Skydive Taupo, we feel privileged to be able to welcome some of their awesome and talented team into our own. Taupo Tandem Skydiving will continue to operate and offer our full range of jumps, now with an even more experienced team than before. But for now, we just want to pass on a huge virtual hug to our friends down the road, and thank you for being such epic neighbours and sharing the love for skydiving over the decades. Growing up I always thought this was the coolest plane but I never knew about the performance until much later. This thing went from LA to DC in 1hr and 4 minutes 20 seconds. Continuing Hill AFB 80th Anniversary series. On October 15, 2005, approximately 150 Airmen from the 1st Fighter Wing’s 27th Fighter Squadron arrived at Hill AFB from Langley AFB, Virginia. They brought with them the Air Force’s newest fighter, the F-22A Raptor. Over the next two weeks, the Airmen operated the new stealth fighter from Hill AFB’s airfield while completing some of the final steps necessary for the aircraft to achieve initial operational capability. Using the Utah Test and Training Range, the 2,675-square-mile and largest block of over-land airspace in the contiguous United States, the 27th Fighter Squadron demonstrated the F-22’s capability to effectively deploy the Joint Direct Attack Munition. This contributed to the aircraft reaching IOC, on time and according to schedule, as planned, in December 2005. It came as no surprise when Air Force Materiel Command assigned the Ogden Air Logistics Center as the depot source of repair for the F-22 Raptor. By the early 2000s, the Ogden ALC had over three decades of experience supporting the U.S. Air Force’s premier jet fighter systems. Additionally, the low observable composites work that began on Hill AFB at the beginning of the decade for the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber made it a natural choice for work on fifth generation stealth fighters such as the F-22. In competing for the workload, the primary question was more about how much of the work would be completed by private industry versus at the Ogden ALC. Ultimately, AFMC chose to have the prime contractor, Lockheed Martin Corporation, conduct some F-22 maintenance at its Palmdale, California, facility while the Ogden ALC would also support the weapon system at Hill AFB. On 17 September in 1935, the #Junkers Ju 87 Stuka took to the (German) skies for the first time. It was to become one of the most feared aircraft in history. Even if you believe you have never heard of the Stuka, you will have ‘heard the Stuka’. Think of the sound of an aircraft going in a steep dive, from a low-pitch wail to a high-pitch screech … that sound is derived of that of Stuka. The Stuka was equipped with two little propellers, named the Trumpets of Jericho, attached to its landing gear, producing its typical sound which terrified those unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end. Stuka is short for ‘Sturzkampfflugzeug’ which translates into dive bomber. This concept was championed by First World War second-highest scoring German ace Ernst #Udet who helped rebuild the German Luftwaffe (air force). The advantage of dive bombing is that a bomb could be delivered accurately as the aircraft dived directly toward the target. It also fitted perfectly within the German tactic of #Blitzkrieg which was essentially a close cooperation between the different arms, including air support. As such, the Stuka took on the role of mobile artillery, able to attack targets deep behind enemy lines. The Ju 87 was the only dive bomber during the Second World War which was capable of diving at a vertical, 90-degree angle. For this the Stuka was built very sturdy and equipped with dive brakes which allowed it to keep its speed low while diving. The pilot had an excellent view on the target but required nerves of steel. He would dive directly toward the target and press the button on the top of his control column. As the bomb would have hit the propeller, it was first thrown clear via a catapult cradle. As soon as the bomb was released, the pull out would commence automatically. The autopilot was important as the pilot might black out due to the G-forces induced by the sharp pull out. Once the bomber was horizontal again, the pilot would regain vision, turn the #autopilot off and regain control of the aircraft. Nerves of steel, indeed. Why is the 777s exhaust vent on the left side instead of the right? 👉 The primary reason for having it exit on the left is to keep the APU exhaust from interfering with ground handling operations. The two lower hold cargo doors are on the right side of the aircraft, and in most cases the door to the bulk cargo hold is on that side as well (the 767 being a noticeable exception). DISCOVERY-BATICS 🌍 “La Torre” 🏰 This maneuver, comes from Pietro Filippini one of my best master of flying! 📚 He prepared this figure around 2008-2009 while he was training for the WAGAC in Turin, where indeed he won the Gold Medal for the Freestyle and for the Overall. ⁉️Why “The Tower”? Professional rally driver Ken Block brought his need for speed to Vegas this week and hitched a ride with the Thunderbirds. Ken made the transition from land speed to airspeed look effortless. I was impressed that Ken could hang with the best in conversations about high speed aerodynamics and supersonic flight and when it came time to get in the cockpit he handled the flight as well as he did the flight theory. Ken completed the entire profile and made it look easy pulling 9 G’s. Needless to say Ken impressed us and I’m willing to bet 🎲 Ken was impressed with the Viper’s 29k lbs of F-16 thrust!
