Post 344 I owe my look to Anupama @anupama_ifs for it is on her that I saw this gamcha saree first and instantly fell in love with her look as well as her saree. Thanks to Moumala of @_akashlina__ I could promptly buy this, one of her #pocketeasyweaves and this blouse which she sells separately. I’ve made a couple of additions to the saree. The top edge was plain white fabric. I attached the lace at pic 10 on it, for only then did I have a sense of completion and it made the edge of the saree firm. Secondly, I attached the pom-poms at the end of the Pallu ( pic 3). Actually there was no need but I had that lace so why not? This vibrant saree has been designed ingeniously. Three lengths of different sized woven checks have been added to soft plain white fabric and the contrasts are absolutely arresting being bright and beautiful. One little thing I did to the joints though, was interlock them. This way I’m sure threads will not separate when it is washed. To the blouse also I made one modification. I removed the back buttons and carefully joined the two portions. This was possible because it has checks which hide the stich right down the back. Thereafter I opened the side and not having a zipper ready at hand, fixed hooks. Far more convenient now! Sometimes, we find a dress or saree irresistible but can’t pick it up because the fit is not perfect or some little thing is amiss. If I can settle it myself and it is pocket easy, I pick up. I feel stitching is one of the most useful skills to have for the great independence it provides you, unless of course you have a tailor such as Sangeeta @sareeandgroundbeneath has, to whom she hands over her precious old blouses and gets them upcycled into fantastic new patchwork ones! Organza seems to be the fabric du jour these days and I’m into it- I love a bit of drama! However, like a lot of beautiful things organza is moody and can be very tricky to wear- it slithers and froofs and likes to escape. This piece is stitched, which I usually don’t do but if you love organza and can’t pleat it comfortably, stitching will make your life easier. I did a scarf wrap with the pallu, which is essentially crossing it around the neck in the front and tucking it beneath, letting the pallu slide down straight. I LOVE breastfeeding but it hasn’t been the smoothest road. While it’s deemed natural and is assumed easy, for the most part it’s not. Being a nurse, I cared for a lot of women who came through my surgical ward with mastitis (blocked and infected milk ducts). I knew breastfeeding had it’s challenges but was oblivious to the many other complications. Long story short my milk “didn’t come in”. Micaiah lost over 10% of his body weight in the first 5 days of his life. I was told to start pumping and topping up with formula. I wanted to exclusively breastfeed but that seemed like it was going to be impossible. I know formula can drastically change a baby’s gut flora and health and I personally wanted to breastfeed only. I want to say that there is nothing wrong with formula feeding nor do I have any judgment towards it, at the end of the day a fed baby is a happy baby, but I couldnt help feeling like I had failed my baby (here come the mum guilts already). I was so upset, I would cry during my night feds, looking at his little face, wishing I could feed my baby. My best friend @jordanashleyn has a son who is 4 weeks older. She has been our milk donor and our lifesaver. Because of her, Micaiah has been exclusively breast fed since his birth. She has given us the greatest gift. I took every natural remedy under the sun and ate lactation promoting foods with little change. Currently, I’m taking domperidone four times a day and pumping after most feeds, even over night when I’m exhausted! My milk supply has increased a lot. While we still top up with donor milk, he’s growing and thriving with the added bonus of having a stronger immunity due to Jordan’s antibodies in her breast milk, yay! Breastfeeding can be the hardest part of having a baby, it needs to be more widely discussed and we need to support each other through this journey. - @kaitlin_bruiser on Instagram

I was 9 months pregnant and I decided to deliver on the 7th of May. As a protocol, I got the COVID test done and as luck would have it, I was tested positive. Within the next couple of hours, I was moved to the isolation ward, leaving my daughter behind. I had never slept away from her for even a single night before. There were multiple questions to be answered because the situation was fairly new to almost everyone. We were all trying to figure out how would a COVID delivery happen and what happens to the new born. I was told that I will be isolated for 14 days and I’d get to see the baby once I test negative. Hell broke on me, my brain froze and my heart sank. My family is into pharmaceuticals and my cousin is the CEO of a leading online healthcare platform, so I believed that I had a fair chance of getting the best treatment around and still this was it. The isolation ward was no less than a jail. It felt alone, hot and scary. There was food, there was tea, a jug to fill water in but none of it helped making things better and easier. The same evening when I was admitted, I learnt that the lab I got tested had a history of false reports, and that was my ray of hope. On 6th May, I got tested again, knowing that the previous report was wrong and I was tested negative. I needed 2 negatives to get out of this place that was eating me up, I couldn’t think of anyone but my daughter. The next negative report came in on 7th evening, by this time I would’ve been home with my new born, here I was standing in the isolation ward, crying my heart out to the blank walls and the virus filled sanitised room. God alone knows why this happened but it happened to me and got me to realise how thankless we are, for the blessings and comforts we have and the people who are with us. Day 6 #Saree There is something very beautiful about sarees that I have ... each has a story , an emotion and a time that takes me back to a memory made . This saree is of a time when I was still a student and had limited resources to even do anything great for my parents on their anniversary . This saree a piece which costed less than even a 1000 bucks always captured my attention for the purity that a Kerala saree offers ... I wanted to gift this to my mom but also wanted that to be an experience for her ... all I could think of is to learn block print and do the whole saree ... went to a workshop and in two days I could make this piece with perfection ... a piece which for my mom is her 2nd most prized possession.1st being a saree that Nishu got for her during his internship with Essar in Jamnagar with the stipend he earned . Happiness is always in the efforts and not in how much expensive or basic anything is .. value that a person thought of you and did that for you ... it’s valuing that effort and acknowledge that you have been important ... there is always a heap of good intent in these gestures and as a human of substance recognise them ... Thankyou mom for always making me understand the value of small pleasures of life and always having a good intent when doing anything for anyone ever . But the unfortunate part is people forget such basic things and value all that which actually has no meaning . If you have someone around you who cares and is concerned for you ... you have the world around you .
