Nellie Griswold Francis founded the only Black women suffrage organization in Minnesota, is credited with writing and shepherding the anti-lynching statute that passed in Minnesota in 1921, twice served as a delegate to state suffrage conferences, and was quite likely the first Black woman to lobby the MN Legislature. A multitalented woman of action, Nellie Griswold Francis worked tirelessly for women’s suffrage and civil rights. Nellie professed in a speech published in The Appeal in 1921: “Your children will reap the harvest of our solidarity — of our determination to stand together, to fight together, and, if needs be, to die together.” She was committed to advancing women’s rights, especially the right to vote and the rights of Black women. Her founding of the Everywoman Suffrage Club (eventually the Everywoman Progressive Council) in 1914 helped ensure that the voices of BIPOC women were also being heard. Her work with the NAACP, the Urban League and the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs - not to mention her friendship with Booker T. Washington and Ida B. Wells - are a few of many instances of her leadership and outreach. Nellie would also go on to serve as president of Pilgrim Baptist’s Ladies’ Aid Society, personally secure money from Andrew Carnegie for a new church organ, form a successful singing group (the Folk Song Coterie), buy a house in a white St. Paul neighborhood despite threatening pushback from the neighbors, meet with two U.S. presidents, travel to Liberia with her husband William T. Francis (MN’s first Black diplomat), and take part in many efforts aimed at achieving women’s suffrage. Want to learn more? Tune in to the premiere of “Citizen” on Monday, October 5th, TPT’s new documentary on the history of women’s suffrage in Minnesota. 📷:: Nellie Francis, ca. 1924. Ritchie’s family wanted to remember “Mama” and share her birthday with Ritchie’s family and friends. Happy Birthday Mama. Concepcion Connie Valenzuela was born on October 6, 1915, and passed on October 18, 1987. In the mid 1950’s the Valenzuela Family moved to the Los Angeles suburb of Pacoima where the then-teenager attended high school and began to play in a rock band. As his career began to take off, he changed his name to Ritchie Valens and eventually recorded the hits we all know and love. The matriarch of the family had lived in Watsonville during her later years, but spent time in the home that Valens bought for her in 1958 with his music earnings. Mrs. Valenzuela would have been 104 years old. #ritchievalens #alwaysremember #neverforget - @ritchievalensofficial on Instagram

RIP OG ة You may not know her by name, but you most definitely know this legend’s restaurants. ة If 2020 couldn’t suck any more, the founder of Roberto’s Taco Shop, Dolores Robledo, died last week at 90. ة A devoted mother to 13 children, 39 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren, AND the California Burrito, a press release says Robledo “loved cooking Mexican food for her family and friends.” ة Dolores Robledo ة She and her husband, Roberto, opened their first taco shop in San Diego in 1964. The restaurant, yellow and red with an impossibly long menu, was an instant hit with locals. ة By the mid-eighties, Roberto’s dominated the fast-casual /late-night Mexican food market in San Diego with scores of locations — and, copycats. Ahem, Alberto’s Gilberto’s Reyberto’s, Filberto’s, Bertoberto’s …. ة First Roberto’s ة In 1990, Robledo moved to Las Vegas and opened 57 restaurants in Nevada with her husband (who passed away years ago.) Today, there are 77 Roberto’s between California and Nevada. ة “A life well lived deserves to be beautifully remembered,” the press release finished. “Dolores had been sharing her love for family and authenticity through each meal served. She has left the legacy of her love and perseverance.” - Chris Cantore - @barrionetwork on Instagram

Today I have very big news! I wish to thank all of my supporters and customers for your help in getting me to the finish line of my student loan payoff! 💐My farm business started in the fall of 2015 when I hired someone to come and till 3x100 ft rows and it has grown to include a high tunnel and floral cooler. I have had slow but steady growth and worked as the solo manager, employee, and owner. That means during the growing season I am busy watering, seeding, weeding, planning, harvesting, and delivering, all while holding down a full time job! Early mornings, late nights (most nights end at 8pm when my husband calls me in to eat, thanks Johnny!) 💐I became very serious about paying down my loan in January of 2019 and have been able to pay off 67% of $38K!! At the beginning of the season, with my eyes on the prize of being able to pay off my loan, we were hit with the devastation of the virus. I was crushed, I was uncertain how I was going to sell my flowers this year. My largest buyer’s store was closed, but demand was very high. After some chats with other flower farmers we decided we had to pivot to handling sales and deliveries ourselves for a while, and things have worked out. The stimulus check helped as well, I am 4 months ahead of what I thought would be my last payment. We are debt free except for our mortgage! I will continue to farm, but step back a bit every year. I still need travel funds, a new front porch, and I look forward to finally being able to support more local artists and makers😁 It is exhausting work, but I love it (I am pretty good at it too :) I enjoy getting my hands in the soil, seeing seedlings grow, and then sharing my best blooms. I look forward to having just a bit more free time to spend with you all-as soon as we can. #supportlocalfarmers #studentloanspaidoff #womanownedbusiness #dreamingoffinancialfreedom #celebrateyourself #upfromhere #patsselfonback #workhard 📸 by @lovesreading - @larkflowerfarm on Instagram

Kata-momi, a word for shoulder massage in Japanese. As a small kid, I used to give my grandparents a shoulder massage all the time. They loved it so much that made me believe that I was really good at it. To be honest, my hands were too small and weak, their stiff and tired shoulders probably didn’t even feel much of a massage. Known as Respect of the Aged Day, today “Keiro-no-Hi” is a public holiday in Japan that celebrates annually to express respect for the elders in the family or the community, and to recognize and thank them for their contributions to society and last but not least, celebrate their long lives. Today, I revisit the old memories with my grandparents in my head instead of going to their graves in Japan. What did we talk about during our Kata-momi? What was on a TV screen? What were we eating that day? ..... I ask. A wrinkly shirt on my grandfather’s back, grandma’s chubby arms, the warm laughs we shared every day. Small moments I can recall have many missing pieces, going around like a broken record playing the same part over and over again. Now my hands are bigger and stronger, ready for a proper shoulder massage, I can only wish I could sit together with them again and tell my grandparents how grateful I am for their valuable life experiences. Happy would be 100th birthday to my grandmother Mary Bradbeer. She passed away 5 years ago, aged 95. She lived independently until the final weeks and was a true matriarch. I suspect she regretted moving to Australia from Scotland in 1955 but I’m certain that the four sons, 12 grandchildren and 10,000,000 great grandchildren are thankful for the sacrifice and the love you brought to so many of our lives. I’ve never known anyone to hoard more jars of Rose’s Lime Marmalade and therein lies the kernel of eccentricity that manifests itself in all her offspring. I will be making (vego) mince & tatties and reading The Broons in your memory. ❤️ - @bradbeer.on.bass on Instagram
