Last week we shared the interior of 383 George Street, here is what it would have looked like from the street around that time. The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. The owner, Henry LeBrun, was heavily involved in local sports and managed Peterborough’s very successful field lacrosse team for two decades! . 📷Peterborough Museum & Archives 2000-012-000360-1 . #throwbackthursday #tbt #ptbo #ptbocanada #coolsign #coolsignage #historicstorefront #downtownptbo #ptbohistory #heritage - @doors_openptbo on Instagram

It seems the old Dover Castle Hotel building in North Adelaide is for sale. I wonder if the fact that it was once a common gaming house adds to its allure? :-) https://www.flickr.com/photos/state_library_south_australia/19074318795 Fined £25 for Having Occupied Gaming House James Henry Burrows, husband of the licensee of the Dover Castle Hotel, North Adelaide, pleaded guilty in the Adelaide Police Court today to having been the occupier of a common gaming house on October 5. He was fined £25 with 15/ costs by Mr. Sabine. P.M. Mr. R. A. Lenthall, who prosecuted, said that betting slips were found by Constables Ryan, Russell, Flint, and Barrington in a bathheater. Mr. Lenthall said that Burrows was convicted in 1930 of having been at the same hotel for the purpose of betting, and was fined £50. Mr. C. J. Philcox, who represented defendant, said that his client was not a bookmaker, but was acting as an agent for one. For #tbt, some old building survey photos of Mount Pleasant Mansion (1-5) and Woodford Mansion (6-10) as Philadelphia celebrates World Heritage Week!! Besides Independence Hall (one of Americas few urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites), were a World Heritage City because of the rich array of historic buildings and cultural sites that are designated as National Historic Landmarks (NHL), including the parks gems of Georgian architecture: Mount Pleasant (designated 1974) and Woodford (designated 1967). Thanks to the City, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, the stewardship organizations, and countless other people who have dedicated their time, energy, and funds to preserving these outstanding landmarks in the East Park! Here’s a tasty #ThrowbackThursday: Abilene’s beloved Candies by Vletas was founded by two Greek brothers, George and Nick, who brought their confectionary talents to Abilene sweet tooths in 1910. The shop and café were located at the corner of N. 1st and Pine streets, a plum location when the Bankhead Highway was constructed and the first road trippers rolled into the city. These days the candy makers have found another sweet spot, a restored railroad building across from the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature, not too far from that original shop. The Vletas brothers passed down their family secrets through generations, and the candy is renowned as a Texas treat. Their famous pralines graced the inaugural dinner of President George W. Bush, and travelers and locals alike stroll in to savor their sugary (and sugar-free) delights. Open Mon-Sat. #200YearsOfOldStone: During the peak of the Civil War in 1863, members from Old Stone Church helped purchase a house on Wilson Street called the Home for Friendless Strangers. Individuals displaced or impacted by the Civil War were taken here for comfort, aide, and support. The Wilson Street house was later named the Lakeside Hospital and went on to become @uhhospitals_cle. Today, UH sits on more than 35 acres of land and leads the way in healthcare and technology. There are no limits to what a few strong-willed and passionate people can accomplish. We are thankful for the Old Stone members who set an example for each of us to lead with kindness. In doing this, they unknowingly created a world-class healthcare system. #ClevelandHistory #PresbyterianChurch #Bicentennial 📸: Courtesy of University Hospitals - @oldstonechurchcle on Instagram

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. The women’s suffrage movement lasted nearly 100 years and involved thousands of women from different walks of life campaigning tirelessly for the right to vote. Suffragists held mass meetings, circulated petitions, and went door-to-door to persuade voters of their cause. Visit the link in our bio to learn more about the movement that brought suffrage to the women of Texas and the nation! ---- Photo courtesy of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. This residence at 20 Margaret Street in St. Thomas was owned by Alfred John Allworth, a former resident of St. Thomas, who died in this home on February 17, 1897. He was married to Jane Kettlewell, who passed away in 1860, and his second wife was Mary Ann Claris, who died in 1875. Allworth was born in Westbury, Wiltshire, England on June 12, 1820 and immigrated on the Cosma with his family in April 1830, arriving in New York, before joining family, who had previously immigrated and settled, in Southwold Township (the Silcox family). His family settled on a farm in Frome, Ontario. In circa 1840s, Allworth moved to St. Thomas to work as a clerk for Edward Ermatinger. When the London and Port Stanley Railway was established, Allworth was appointed as station agent and worked in this position for 15 years. He later became the first manager of the Canada Southern Loan Company, and remained in this position for 21 years, until his health forced him to resign five years before his death in 1897.
