Peace Family, This is the very upsetting and totally unbelievable! All we ever do, and want to do is spread love. COVID-19: Why we are temporarily postponing our events On Friday 13 March 2020, the federal and state governments met to discuss strategies for containing the COVID-19 virus in Australia. The advice from health officials to governments was that events over 500 people should not go ahead until the pandemic is contained. This move is designed to slow the pace of spread and keep our health system from being overwhelmed like we have seen in countries like Italy. Whilst The Makers and Shakers Market doesn’t strictly fit the criteria of a ‘mass gathering’, it also doesn’t feel right to go ahead with our April markets until Australia’s health and political authorities signal that this situation is under control. The phrase ‘uncharted territory’ has been used a lot and that’s the one thing we’re all experiencing together: nobody knows how this crisis will unfold and it’s that uncertainty which makes things so difficult as we simply can’t predict the outcome. We are acutely aware of how important events are to the livelihoods of our makers. Organising events is our livelihood and deciding to postpone these events will hit us personally very hard in the short term (and we can’t think of a business that won’t be affected). But our duty of care to the health of attendees and stallholders is paramount. Sadly, we are all facing some really challenging times ahead. The City of Topeka has partnered with several downtown restaurants to provide curbside pickup of to-go orders for patrons practicing social distancing and restauranteurs seeking sales while complying with a restriction on gatherings of more than 50 people due to COVID-19 concerns. “I’m pleased that the City of Topeka can help our downtown businesses to stay open and provide food services while promoting social distancing and creating a safe environment for our citizens,” said City Manager Brent Trout. The City of Topeka has pledged to reserve two parking stalls in front of each participating downtown eating establishment, including restaurants, coffee shops, sandwich shops and bars that serve food. Parking stalls will be designated by orange cones and a red and white sign that says “15 min food pickup only”. “A big ‘Thank You’ to whoever came up with this idea. At this juncture, we should do anything we can to help our employees,” said Doug Thomas owner of The Classic Bean. Trader Joe’s does not have its own dairy cows, produce farm, and pasta manufacturing plant. Costco does not make yogurt. Kroger does not have an egg facility. Thanks to the proliferation of grocery store brands, such misconceptions aren’t entirely obvious. At a minimum, these products, also known as private label brands, imply a stamp of approval packaged with an enticingly low price. But private labels lack transparency, especially when the product is certified organic. Where do these store brand products come from? Typically, chain stores buy products wholesale at the lowest available market price and package them with their own branded labels. Because the chain store buys the cheapest products available at any given moment, a single store brand could come from numerous sources over time. National chain stores may source their organic dairy from one company in the Northeast for stores in that region, another in the Southeast, and another in the Midwest. This variability in product sourcing makes it difficult, sometimes impossible, for consumers to determine where and how the milk was produced. Store brand organic milk may come from highly rated producers or from factory dairies. Cornucopia generally recommends caution in buying store brands, but the exceptions prove the rule. PCC Community Markets, for example, sells store brand organic milk supplied exclusively from one highly rated dairy cooperative. And Natural Grocers sells store brand organic eggs supplied exclusively from one highly rated egg producer. Their prices are most often higher than other brand names on their shelves. PCC Community Markets and Natural Grocers offer trusted store brands that meet their in-house requirements for sustainability and transparency. Invested consumers can contact their local stores to confirm who is supplying their private-label organic food. But that answer is just a snapshot in time—one that may not be accurate. The bloody lovely Ruby Bayley-Pratt, who is one of our trustees, spoke to @actionaiduk about period poverty in a pandemic in a recent blog. She said: “We know through our work that many people end up having to go without, using toilet paper, rags, socks, or nothing at all. They can become a prisoner in their home for fear of leaking in public or can develop infections or rashes from using inadequate products or homemade methods.” On our Covid-19 work Ruby said: “We wanted to support as many people as possible so we implemented a trust-based “Take What You Need” (TWYN) scheme via our storage facility, opening it up to anyone who needed products like drop-in centres, refuges, homeless shelters and food banks. We even supplied frontline NHS workers who were struggling to access period essentials.” But ultimately, she stressed, we are working to make ourselves no longer bloody needed!!! “People should not have to rely on a small charity for period products. Like condoms, we think the government should be taking care of this essential need for those who struggle to access them. Today, my colleague @repmceachin and I visited the US Postal Service Processing and Distribution Center in Richmond. This facility operates around the clock, and handles all of the inbound and outbound mail that flows through Central Virginias local post offices and collection boxes. . The workers at this facility have adapted to the disruption of COVID-19, and the added challenges of operational changes made by Postmaster General DeJoy. Theyre also preparing for the anticipated high volume of mail this fall. I thank the entire team for their tireless work to make sure that Central Virginians receive the correspondence, supplies, and packages they need. . In the U.S. House, I was proud to cosponsor and pass the Delivering for America Act.
