Signs of life on Venus? An international team of astronomers today announced the discovery of a rare molecule — phosphine — in the clouds of Venus. On Earth, this gas is only made industrially or by microbes that thrive in oxygen-free environments. Astronomers have speculated for decades that high clouds on Venus could offer a home for microbes — floating free of the scorching surface but needing to tolerate very high acidity. Confirming their discovery required using 45 antennas of the @alma.observatory in Chile, in which the European Southern Observatory (ESO) is a partner. The international team, which includes researchers from the UK, US and Japan, estimates that phosphine exists in Venus’s clouds at a small concentration, only about twenty molecules in every billion. Following their observations, they ran calculations to see whether these amounts could come from natural non-biological processes on the planet. Some ideas included sunlight, minerals blown upwards from the surface, volcanoes, or lightning, but none of these could make anywhere near enough of it. These non-biological sources were found to make at most one ten thousandth of the amount of phosphine that the telescopes saw. The team believes their discovery is significant because they can rule out many alternative ways to make phosphine, but they acknowledge that confirming the presence of “life” needs a lot more work. Although the high clouds of Venus have temperatures up to a pleasant 30 degrees Celsius, they are incredibly acidic — around 90% sulphuric acid — posing major issues for any microbes trying to survive there. O míssil ficou totalmente destruído ao impactar com a superfície da Terra, mas o filme da câmera era envolvido por aço e permaneceu intacto. O míssil atingiu aproximadamente 100 km de altura, sendo que antes o recorde era do balão Explorer II, atingindo 20 km de altura, já dando para ver a curvatura da Terra. Esta información obtenida por la señal emitida al sistema satelital nos ayuda saber no solo sus patrones de movimiento, sino también saber si han visitado zonas de alimentación o si algo anda mal. ¿A que nos referimos con el si algo anda mal? Podemos saber si la tortuga se encuentra en la orilla mucho tiempo (fuera de lo normal), o si por mano humana fue removida de su hábitat, indicándonos el lugar en donde se encuentra. Aqui pueden ver el mapa de sus movimientos desde el día de liberación. Chely (tortuga verde) es los puntos verdes y Kai (tortuga carey) los amarillos. Qué nítido, ¿verdad? ¿Signos de vida en Venus? Un equipo internacional de astrónomos y astrónomas anunció hoy el descubrimiento de una molécula rara, la fosfina, en las nubes de Venus. En la Tierra, este gas solo se produce industrialmente o por microbios que prosperan en entornos libres de oxígeno. La comunidad astronómica ha especulado durante décadas que las nubes en Venus podrían ofrecer un hogar para los microbios, los cuales flotan libres de la superficie hiper-caliente, pero que necesitan tolerar una acidez muy alta. La detección de fosfina podría apuntar a vida aérea extraterrestre.
